Worst luck and/or misclicks you've had?

Several days ago, while grinding for Spirit of Hallowmas, I almost clicked on a card which reduces the menace before I had turned it in.

Keep in mind this was almost near the end of Hallowmas, the Hallowmas mask card was frustratingly elusive on my deck, and I was running out of favours to join the party again.

I am very cautious when stepping on new content in Fallen London. I try to check the wiki or even consult this forum whenever possible.

For example, I am now building my railway stations and certain options would give me Mutersalt, a Fate-only item. Without checking the wiki I would never have known and would have missed my chance to get them.

It literally says that it grants an item that’s otherwise obtainable only with Fate. The Mutersalt is nearly impossible to miss.

I think “the Hallowmas mask card was frustratingly elusive” probably covered it generally. I saw it all of twice in the whole two weeks.

Not sure about this, but when I played it, I decided to not check Wiki on every step and it cost me… a Mutersalt!

Actually, the Mutersalt is very easy to miss, depending on your choices for how and where to put the tracks and whether or not you have a revolutionary bent. And it’s a great nuisance not to have it.

Happened today. I’ve played “The Provost and the devil” storylet, and the light get shut down. I almost managed to screenshot the result… almost. All I received is an empty file. I did not even managed to read the storylet. And it was dismissed when I booted PC again.

Ooooh, the end part of the story is quite great so here are the echoes:
Success:

A confession at the Parlour of Virtue

You hardly recognise the Provost when he leaves the university. He’s wearing an anonymous suit, Neathglass goggles and a bowler hat. You only know him by his impressive moustache. Today, he walks to Veilgarden, to that noted of bordellos: the Parlour of Virtue! As he enters, so does the devil he met last week. They do not acknowledge each other in public.

You follow them in, handing over a big chunk of your expense allowance to the door-keep. You can worry about explaining the receipt later. Security inside the parlour is discreet but ubiquitous, and it takes all your craft to find a position near the Provost and his infernal companion. You can hear the burbling of a hookah as the Provost speaks.

“… regret having to set Jeremy on the poor fellow… wouldn’t listen to reason! … our meetings here… temerity to blackmail… besides… the Sun? Madness! Utter madness… only responsible… in any case, the Radical Postgraduate loved him… civic duty… a fine story to go with the rest… You know how they get if the quota isn’t met… Tell me that you understand…”

The devil understands. He is the very soul of kind acceptance. That confession seals matters. The Provost killed the Senior Reader in _______. You slip away to consider your next step. The Provost and the devil move on to other matters.

Failure:

D__n this fog!
The fog is thick today, and the Provost is cautious. He loses you near Veilgarden. Can you pick up his trail, or will you be waiting until next Thursday?

Enjoy the end of the story!

You’re welcome and enjoy it! I mean it, enjoy FL! I was going too much for min-maxing without savoring the stories and I regret it! You’re lucky that I delayed University for years (because of min-max) and I started recording my adventures!

Reading those bits will, at a point, get you to some great “Ahaaaaa!” moments when you realize X and Y! One that comes to mind is the Bohemian sculptress which actually mentions a character you’ll meet quite soon.

I accidentally bought 1500 cheerful goldfish a few months ago. Not desperate, but annoying, as I was saving my echoes at the time.

Aside from my terrible luck when attempting to obtain yacht (which to be fair despite being costly and annoying could be repeated) the worst unlucky moment I think was when it comes to luck based outcome concerning the last Constable as pretty much there are no second chances, not even with fate. Naturally, I rolled out failure on this outcome, which was not surprising to me given amount of times I get screwed over when it matters.

This. From the roleplay point of view, that was the reason to avoid Medusa’s Head for quite a long time, since, well… ghosts of the past are too much to bear.

Yes. Left that undone for precisely this reason. People were very stricken when it was introduced and they discovered no do-over.

I killed my plant by accidental click, and spent ages regrowing it for the Tournament of Lilies. When I won I was too far into the game for the rewards to be worth the effort :frowning:

I just did that! I never bothered growing one but I think I need it to get a counterfeit head of John the Baptist. Grrr.

I’ve got loads of John the Baptist’s heads. If you get in touch in game I can try and lend you one.

Ooh, I’d love that. Thank you!

Is your user name jeanrowley? I typed that in but you didn’t show up. Mine is gary_ablett

It is, it might be because I’m not in London at the moment. I’ll try adding you when I have enough actions to get back (I’m in Helicon house). My profile is https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/Jean%20Rowley

The mask card only shows up if you’re wearing it when you draw the cards. There are a few like that, so worth keeping an eye on.
