The Fruits of the Zee Festival 2023

Oof, this festival has its frustrating moments too, like the original. Just failed 3 dive checks in a row, at various levels of candle… that’s 20 actions gone with nothing to show for it besides some wounds. oof.

At least the risk can be avoided by grinding more supplication. There’s still a random element if you’re seeking a particular treasure, but there seems to be less randomness overall.

Will I miss anything if I collect 3 different corals and 30 skulls of coral = 3750 favours?

You will miss the cosmetic variations on the clothing made from the corals and you will miss the achievement for discovering the thing at the bottom of the diving area. Do note that it takes one visit to the bottom to get the achievement but interacting with whatever is there can be done 5 times before it locks, which may just be driving home a point about it being pentamerous or it may be of some later use.
To get all of the cosmetic variations you need 3 units of each of the 3 coral types.
Also, if you’re into that kind of thing, you may miss the text from changing your destiny, which is for the first time fate-free during a festival.

I think 5 witch stones equals 50 so ten each.

Is there a wiki page somewhere for this as I can’t find it? Cheers!

There is.

There’s a hidden quality that tracks the visits and it locks after 5.

Hmmm… hmmm… I still think they are not talking about him. But we’ll find out!

First number is the Devotion and percentages are success rate for each depth. Because a failure just throws you out of the water, I recommend going for 100% checks for your depth.

5 - 50%, 30%, 10%, 0%
6 - 70%, 50%, 30%, 10%
7 - 90%, 70%, 50%, 30%
8 - 100%, 90%, 70%, 50%
9 - 100%, 100%, 90%, 70%
10 - 100%, 100%, 100%, 90%
11 - 100%, 100%, 100%, 100%

Want the achievement? Get 11 devotion. Want the knife? Get it to 11. Want the Loyd? Get it to 10 for depth 4, but best is to get it to 11 in case you need another dive if RNG doesn’t serve you the card.

I appreciate the mechanical mix up, but I feel like I would miss the tone of the Zee Festival if this was my only interaction with it. One of the fun things about the festival (at least for me) was the mimicry to parades of town fairs and getting to see the descriptions of weird zee creatures, and while a more morose tone works (and obviously I’m sure the second week will change tone with trading), I don’t think this one would work for me if it was my first interaction with the event or even my second or third since it kind of relies on making your arrival an anti-climax (event though the diving is VERY cool).
I feel like the separate location gives the festival a kind of all encompassing energy that things like Christmas, Whitsun etc lack and help it feel more like going to a celebration than just ‘there is a celebration happening somewhere in the background’ (though we always have Hallowmas).

Just checking to see if I got it right: after getting three of each coral and having visited the utter depths six times, I can just head off to Jericho and farm coral skulls there until I get 3750 Favor?

Yes, that’s all.

For more text you can get each of the treasure (maybe there will be individual cash-ins and more echoes) and the old items from diving to get the echoes from selling those.

Oh for sure, I will do that as well, once I’ve made sure I’m secure in terms of Favor. I still need to make the deep dive five more times, who knows how much time I’ll have left once I’m done (I can and will do the calculations to know, just not right now).
Thank you for the confirmation!

Not sure if this is helpful… you might be able to travel to London grab 10 free actions then travel back to Mutton Island and continue with the event.

I believe this is better/faster for the newbies who don’t yet have a ship and travel by ferry. Or maybe your menaces are too high and you need to head back to London to lower them anyway.

I believe you only need to dive to the bottom five times in total though, as every dive (including the first one) grants one audiences with the bride, and the storylet locks at five audiences.
Unless I’m wrong?

Here’s another interesting theory from Reddit, but beware of spoilers: https://www.reddit.com/r/fallenlondon/comments/16cnpqq/speculations_on_the_cause_of_the_troubles_this/.

It’s funny, I was thinking of her when I saw how deep we dived. Though it turned out to be “just” a Fluke, it doesn’t change that FB hasn’t done much with her since Sunless Sea as far as I know, and that this would indeed be the perfect time and place to change that.

Oh good, I’m not the only one who had that mixup. I went from thinking “Oh no, why is that dark lady exercising her authority beyond it’s usual scope?!” to relaxing completely when it was merely the Fathomking’s bride.

Mistaken identity seems to be a motif for this festival. “The Drowned Man” WHICH ONE THIS IS IMPORTANT

If the Drowned Man is even half as litigous as the rest of the Masters, the Fathomking is about to get a lawsuit so bad you won’t even be able to say “Eaten” in the fathomcourt without receiving a Cease and Desist afterwards

Well there was that one ES a few months back where perhaps the most important detail was revealed: The Fathomking has Lawyers. And good ones. So it might not be so simple!

I looked through the FotZ event wiki, see if my understanding is correct:

  1. New items: you need to collect the 9 (3x3) corals for redeeming them next week.

  2. ‘At least one unique item’ = more than one unique item?

In addition at least one unique item can only be obtained by diving to max depth. An encounter there will get you Discovered: the Pentamerous Bride, a vanity quality, and you can do this up to 5 times, each time getting 1 x Audiences with the Bride.

  1. You only need 2000 Thalassic favours to get the new ship, anything more than that is for getting the older items of previous FoTZ events. Is there any reason to get 3750 favours? A vanity quality perhaps?

  2. Is it more efficient to hunt for coral skulls in Jericho Locks (for those who unlocked the Railway)?

  3. What happens to the collected corals, stones etc after the event if they are not used to redeem for items?
