I feel physical, internal pain trying to decide whether or not that trade is worth losing the precious Theorem I am painstakingly grinding as we speak. I’ve been saving scraps for months now thinking I’d buy myself some Veils-Velvet and now THIS happens.
I’m confused - it’s an alternative option, to get an item instead of progress, right?
Is it? Do you need the Material later in order to progress the Discordance storyline? Otherwise this mainly seems like a convenient way to dispose of it, since it’s gained as a by-product of studying a principle. Either way it’s a brand new way to get Veils-Velvet, and if you do then need to create another Material it’s… well, comparatively simple.

I’ve been saving scraps for months now thinking I’d buy myself some Veils-Velvet and now THIS happens.
I’ve been deliberately holding off spending my scrap even though I hit the buy price long ago, at first out of not knowing which one I’d be needing most or soonest, and subsequently after noting the trend that all of the scrap-exclusive items were steadily gaining alternative methods to obtain them. I would definitely hang onto the scrap. You can spend it (card draws notwithstanding) any time, on whatever you like, but it takes ages to build up again. Getting a new theorem from the lab, on the other hand, is really no big deal.
I haven’t started the Studies - currently grinding for a variety of stuff in London. I know they’ll require a theorem at one point, among other things, but beyond that - nothing.
Well, as you may have gathered, this was the point indicated, I think. As for whether there’s any other stage where the Material is required to progress further, or the trade for Veils-Velvet is the only use it has, someone else probably has the answer, but I don’t know that just yet either.
Re: earlier discussion, can confirm that horsehead amulets don’t do jack, by the way. So it’s either have cider or waste a bunch of actions while you draw cards and wait to revivify, I guess. edited by Tsar Koschei on 5/4/2021

I’ve sometimes wondered whether I really did make the right decision buying cider instead of goats all those years ago. It’s little moments like this that remind me I more or less made the right choice, insofar as I still intend to buy enough goats one of these days when I’m finally, gloriously wealthy enough.
Yes, I’m only two goats in (one Über) and I certainly don’t regret that, but Cider is absolutely next on my shopping list, and has been for some time.
It hasn’t escaped my notice that I’d surely have it by now if not for all the new heavy echo sink content that’s been released in the last year and a half or so. While I’m certainly not complaining, it’s been very much a mixed blessing in that regard. At least the new high-EPA earning routes make up for it somewhat… or would if I ever had spare actions to pursue them.
To answer some questions about the Immaterial Material.
My recollection is imperfect, but if I’m remembering right…
I think you need to collect the Immaterial Material to advance. You do not need to trade it in for the Veils Velvet to progress. I’m keeping mine as a trophy. Also, keeping it on hand unlocks an option on a card somewhere, although I honestly forget where.
It wasn’t really in question that the material is gained in the process of advancing, only whether there was any later need for the material for further advancement, or whether the exchange for Veils-Velvet is the only particular use for the material itself. So, what’s this about a card?
Though I do think I’ll get a spare material regardless after the velvet exchange, then whip up another theorem once I have the time to spare. Stock one of everything, etc.
edited by Tsar Koschei on 5/4/2021
You can now get an Affiliation that increases the AotRS by an extra +1, making Impossible Theorem a little bit easier, especially for Correspondents with proper Ambitions. Still, much harder than it was before the Theorem / Attar nerf.
Strange, though:
I’m already at a stage where I need the Breath of the Void, and I have already spent one Impossible Theorem — but I haven’t yet seen an option to exchange Theorem for the Veils-Velvet.
And, boy, grinding for the Breath of the Void is a cumbersome exercise!
edited by Wojciech on 5/4/2021
I am in high need of a certain Discordant Missive, and prepared to reciprocate. Thank you in advance for any discordant assistance. edited by Sir Reginald Monteroy on 5/4/2021
And, boy, grinding for the Breath of the Void is a cumbersome exercise!
Is it? I have the sense that it came together pretty easily for me. I’m pretty sure I’ve put all the items in place to buy a second one, too.
Maybe I’ve just become so inured to the grind that I don’t really even feel it anymore.

I have send you a calling card. When we get acquainted, I shall sent you a missive. I am also looking for one myself, so… wink wink it would be much appreciated if you send me one back.
I don’t like the option to rob the vault; it’s just an RNG roll with low probability of success.
One of my characters got through in just the first try. Another one had been trying more than ten times, re-rolls included, and losing a crap-load of kifers and rats. edited by Rostygold on 5/5/2021
I agree, it kind of feels like artificial difficulty and you just have to brute-force it until you get lucky. And then you die. As if that wasn’t happening enough already. edited by Tsar Koschei on 5/5/2021
I’m stumped. Or did I reach the end of the content without realizing it?
Eight principles researched. Did 2-8, got my immaterial material, then got my anticandle, uncounted lower circle, did first principle and got my throaty scream, then uncounted the upper circle. So now I’ve got all that stuff done, Anchoress isn’t offering any new meditation options, I tried going out on the ice to see if there was some kind of "zeroth seal" to unlock, no dice, can’t seem to find any place to progress things further. Was that it? That final meditation didn’t really seem like an ending… am I missing something?
It said "In order to remember something, you need to forget something first." I’ve done the forgetting, what am I supposed to remember now? edited by Tsar Koschei on 5/5/2021

That sounds odd.
There is a zeroth seal. Clearing both Circles is the main hurdle to getting it.
Do you still have "Number Not In Your Head?" After you clear the Circles, you still need to visit the Hurlers because Number Not In Head only updates after you walk away from them. And if that’s not it, then what’s your Crystalline Knowledge quality?
I first used the goat-counting option in the castle to try and set the number to zero, and I’ve also been up the hill, no number not in head quality. I guess I’ll try it again, see if I can get it to work. Crystalline knowledge is 10.
Edit: visited the stones again, the only effect I got was "Inkling of Identity remains unchanged, at 738."
Edit2: just tried it again at the castle and got the same thing, i.e. nothing. And I could swear the first time I did it I DID see the related message, something like "Were you thinking of a number at all?" But it seems I’ve lost the number entirely rather than had it set to zero.
edited by Tsar Koschei on 5/5/2021

I had the same problem. Solved it by just refreshing the webpage.
