Buying blind cave fish is actually another reason the Moth is just flat-out superior as a party. You constantly create enough nightmares to make use of the Visitors card.
Blind cave fish can be sold for Magnificent Diamonds when the Apicius Club is active.

Alrighty, I shall change my Baby mask to a Moth mask.
Do you get to keep your mask after the event?
They’re selling permanent ones for fate, so what do you think? Do you not read the event info, or even the storylets you play through? It’s all laid out.
Yeah, Nightmares are better. Pity I did them last year. I really wish there was more menace reducing equipment for the other menaces.
For those of you who are rather new to Hallowmas: depending on which menace you turned in most, there was a chance to acquire a new affiliation at the end of Hallowmas.
My guess is there will be some new affiliation for those sticking to wounds…
I ran some simulations and the Masques for Nightmares and Wounds are a little slower than Suspicion, since their [1-33] option gives 5 Nightmares/Wounds instead of 7 Suspicion. But, they don’t shuffle away your Scintillack and Collated Research which is definitely a point in their favour; St Elmo only wins out if you’ve already got a stack of items and don’t need to take a trip to the cornerstore half-way through Hallowmas. But, if you want a particular gift at the end of this you should pick the relevant Menace, and they’re all reasonably close.
Aiming for Menace 8-9 (8’s usually slightly better, but 9 delays needing another Free Entry) we have Spirit-per-Action (SpA) at St Elmos: 3.21 SpA; Pavillion/Roof Below: 2.88 SpA. The Roof Below is interesting because it requires no inputs if you have Shapeling Arts 3+ and the Infant mask; it’s not very profitable, but you’re making ~1.1 EPA (compared to 0.18 EPA at the Pavillion and 0.07 EPA at St Elmo’s). All this ignore outside synergy, of course, and is a "Masques only" analysis.
(And the Hungry Nightmare Factory is naturally king at 7.7 SpA, but I don’t recommend too much of that; I’m down to 209 Watchful in only 1 day!)

I guess there’s a hidden counter for which ones you have turned in?
So Wounds will be the new one this year, time will tell if the reward is on par with the one offered by the Queen/Moth.
St Elmo is the kind of club for super rich untouchables. For those whose stats are below 200 and scrimping on resources, grinding suspicion via non-masque activities would be much more profitable. A session of public lecture on Correspondence at the Forgotten Quarter gives 1 suspicion, 2 dubious testimonies, and raising watchful skill. Definitely not a good choice for those who wish to be knighted, or harvesting the element of dawn.
After quick calculation, each CP of menaces worth ~0.25e. No option (i know of) worth the effort for endgame player in terms of profit. And for vanity quality you have to reach 2500 Spirit or more.
Well, I’m wandering the streets wearing a Crown mask, a barrel and a chatty rat. And PASSING my skill checks, damnit! Working with Jasper and Frank at Mahogany hall, mostly.
I wasn’t going to get a goldfish, but if it’s useful for an experiment than I suppose I will. It doesn’t seem hard. 14 confessions total.
My potential shopping list:
cat & fish -3 each
rat- 2
poet - 2
liquid deb - 3
squirming rep - 2
stormy scoundrel -3
Can’t get them all, but the scoundrel & rat don’t seem all that useful to me.

Strictly from a mechanical perspective, the Scoundral gives +10 in two stats. If you have Tigers/Overgoats/40 renown rewards you can get this from other places, but if you are new you can get a +10 Watchful and Shadowy companion, which can give a real boost boost. Similarly, the weapon is +9 to each. The rat is +10 Persuasive, but if you got the Pirate Poet she is too.
Now, how you are weighing that vs. character I am not sure. Caroline is at a point where she is mostly picking people she would be more likely to associate with over others. But it seems like the Scoundrel and Catapult would be useful for new players.

My monster hunter weapon is +12 W&D, so that’s not so useful. I’m definitely getting the poet. The scoundrel, well, I have options for +8 watch and shadow, so, yeah, could be nice but it’s not an absolute must. I got her for my much lower alt (who plays intuitively without much calculation.) And I like experimenting on animals (MWAHAHAhahaha!)
I was curious at what menace level it would be most efficient to cash out, either early or later by using equipment, and I ended up making this:
https://rpubs.com/dclaszen/hallowmas
Update: The spirit gain formula has changed apparently. It used to be 6 times your menace level, minus 14 (sortof, the real formula was weird and gave the same results except for in certain situations that needed a fix). Now it’s equal to your menace CP.
Before the change to the formula, cashing out at a range of 6 to 8 menace levels was usually optimal, with 6 for lower menace CP gains, and 7 to 8 for higher menace CP grinds. After the change, the formula has become linear and cashing out at higher menace levels is now (almost) always better. If you can’t reach 9 or higher, though, the difference isn’t that much and 8 is generally good enough.

Previous advise, no longer valid: unless you are doing something extreme, you will be fine with cashing out at menace levels around 6 to 8. The differences between cashing out at these levels are small, usually around 5% to 10%. If you want to tweak this slightly, try to cash out at 6 if you only gain around 1 menace CP per action, and 7 or 8 if you gain more than that.

Dear all who offered to trade confessions with me (e.g. Lady Robyn of Astora, Messy Backyards), I thank you but I must decline for now. Let’s wait till next week when we get more confessions, only then should we decide to trade or assess our options.
Therefore I will decline now, not because I got what I wanted or I dislike you. Thanks! :)
That does change quite a lot and makes the Baby easily the ‘worst’ grind for Spirit, but better for the financial rewards available if you have Shapeling Arts.
I’ve been doing only the Baby to 7 Wounds and am averaging 300 Spirit per day. I also expect to not do much grinding on weekends, which suggests that 3000 Spirit is well within most people’s capabilities and we should be seeing some people hitting in the 4000-5000 range if they really go for it with the Moth.

My Hungry Crown approach has brought me to 1133 so far, but I’ll run out of Collated Research before the fortnight’s up, unfortunately, and will have to spend a chunk of actions addressing that.
[ edit: mask & helmet is a fashion faux pas ]

…dang, are the Masques really that good if you’re able to extend your Menace gain? I thought racking up Suspicion from purposefully failling at covers in Balmoral was pretty good, but I’m clearly doing something wrong since I’m stuck at a measly 454 SoH.
Admittedly, it doesn’t help I’ve forgotten which items in my arsenal can extend Suspicion gain apart from A Preserver of London

Does your simulation account for the unfortunate fact that the Tracklayer’s Helmet clashes with the Mask? They both go in the Hat slot, so you can’t avail yourself of the better Wounds-increasing actions to raise from 7 to 8.

Wait a minute? Spirit is no longer capped at 2500 now?
