Hallowmas 1899

You can get both. You can acquire a new Newcomer after upgrading the original.

Liquid Debutante echo: Fallen London

They are joined by a new mask: the Infant
Too scary for me!

My initial thought was to use Unwise Ideas to make menaces, but that first Unwise Idea can be tricky to get (I think it’s all rare successes?) so that’s not very efficient. Ah well, party on! (with some liberal candle-hungering for spice, of course)
I’ve opted to strip buck naked, shoo away my pets, companions, transportation devices and Vake, and fail hilariously at the Cabinet Noir in Balmoral. Not too good at math, but it seems to be gathering Suspicion far quicker than in the actual relevant Masque.

Questions, I have them now after some planning.

If you trade up a creature, like the rubbery cat (free) or pirate poet (fate), do you get the option to get another one?

Why can I do nothing with my untried tracklayer? Will he perhaps be upgradable next week?

Will the fate-locked companion choices change next week?

Is there a way to check your current level of spirit of hallowmas?

BTW, the RNG continues to hate me. I am doing everything suspicious I can with debuffs, and passing 33% checks. LOL. Oh well, good for shadowy gains, which is why I chose the Crown.

Getting the Rubbery Feline is only locked by already having a Rubbery Feline, not by having its upgraded version, so I assume you can get another, yes. The Pirate Poet is available for free at Valentine’s, but we won’t know whether having her upgraded version locks you out of getting her again until then.

The Tracklayer was upgradable last year - it remains to be seen whether he’ll be upgradable again.

It’s a quality in your profile, under &quotStories&quot. Searching for &quotSpirit&quot will bring it up.

If you upgrade a companion, you’ll be able to get another from the same source. I upgraded my Rubbery Newcomer, and was able to immediately come across a second. If you upgrade a Renown companion, you’ll be able to get another from the same place you got the original (you’ll have to spend favors again). You ought to be able to acquire another Pirate-Poet immediately, although I might encourage you not to… you can make meet her for free during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose (in February), the Fate option is for people like yourself who don’t have one on-hand.

The Tracklayer was upgrade-able last year. He basically had the same role last year that the Rubbery Newcomer does this year, a free companion new to the Festival that can also be upgraded for Confessions. But it seems all of his upgrades are Fate-locked this year.

The companions shouldn’t change next week. The only thing that will happen next week is another 7 free confessions.

Spirit of Hallowmas is in your Myself tab. Use the text filter function.

The Fallen London RNG takes delight in the suffering of each and every player. It wants to be AM from I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream when it grows up.

I read somewhere that certain items should be equipped if you want to efficiently raise the Spirit of Hallowmas number. For example, Cheerful Goldfish, -1 Nightmares, for Pavilion of Butterflies.

I’m now undecided about whether to change my Baby Mask to a Moth Mask, since my Railway hasn’t unlocked and I don’t have a Tracklayer’s Helmet (-1 Wounds). I do have a Cheerful Goldfish.

After the event, do you get to keep the mask you have picked? I read that the mask ‘decays’ and cannot be equipped, unless you spend Fate, Do you still keep the mask as a souvenir, perhaps as a mantelpiece item? And I assume picking one mask means you’re not getting the other two?

The way I see it: raising your Menaces outside the Masque might be better if you don’t have enough of the items needed to raise the Menace whenever the option is available.

You only go inside a Masque if: you need to convert a particular Confession, you are wearing a compatible mask that can get you +5 Menace once in a while, when you get lucky with the ‘The Airs of Hallowmas’ RNG.

I think it says something remarkable about this game that I can cheerfully think “oh well, next year” for some options.

I decided on buying the roseate antagonist (MUCH cheaper than the anchoress) and the pirate poet.

I upgraded my rubbery newcomer and did indeed get an option for another one immediately.

Thanks for the spirit tip. Silly me, was looking in my possessions.

The Starry Eyed Scoundrel and Grubby Urchin can be bought at the Bazaar, and the Misplaced Ring at the Upper River Bazaar, in case that is helpful to anyone.

I hate this stupid diving helmet. I keep forgetting to re-equip my mask to draw cards again after leaving the party.

&quotWhy will no-one invite me to their party?!&quot
&quotCould it be because you’re wearing a diving helmet?&quot
&quot…d—nation, I forgot I was wearing it again!&quot

Am I right to assume that accumulating 1.5k Spirit of Hallowmas gives a nice reward item at the end of the event, and 2.5k (if that’s possible without Fate) gives a nice fancy title?

2.5k is plenty possible without fate, all it takes is focus and economical play. And 2.5k is also the upper limit of what can be spent on material rewards, any more than that is only for the title.

Damnit I fell into the same trap with Scandal. Wasting all those points at the tomb colony. At least I got a new lion friend.

Sadly that comes with the opportunity cost involving procuring items for this weekend’s Rat Market, and probably further progression towards unlocking the Railway (currently POSI tier 2, Notablity 2). I guess a lot of actions lie between my current state and the Upper River Exchange. :(

The rat market trades will return before very long, and you can hand in any accumulated items once they rotate back, making the effect of the wait practically negligible. Hallowmas won’t return for another year, and the opportunity to earn Knight points for this year will be lost forever.

12 weeks vs. 52 weeks. And all you get from the Rat Market is money (unless you still need the boots), and you can get money all year long.

(12 weeks for the Season to come back. Lord knows when the wind and the moon will come back to their current state, but you don’t know what’s buyable in their current state, so it’s likely something you don’t even have a use for)

Yeah, I mean obviously every action you spend in the game has the opportunity cost of not doing other things. So yes, participating in Hallowmas has the opportunity cost of not just grinding echoes or whatever you’d normally be doing. On the other hand, the opportunity cost of not participating in Hallowmas is… missing Hallowmas. So.
Not really clear on the value of this kind of analysis.

A final query from me regarding Hallowmas…

If you can choose only one of the two: Haunted Goldfish vs Morally and Physically Flexible Rubbery Cat, which will it be?

+2 Dreaded vs +2 Bizarre and +8 Shadowy

From the Wiki, I believe both Companions also have their own unique uses:

vs

The goldfish is only useful for one research project, while the Casing source at Helicon is always available, so I’d say the cat.

Totally the cat. It’s rubbery. What more could you want?
:) (And Diptych’s right.)
