Did anyone echo the fatelocked part of Becoming Jack in the investigating Jack storyline?
I have it, but you need to dig a bit back in my journal. I did it back in June.
I just wanted to chip in for a moment.
I got Exceptional Friendship somewhere around the start of september, and, after a few days worth of camping in Watchmaker’s Hill to find a very regretful fellow, I went to the House of Chimes and did his story.
It was beautiful. Fallen London has top-notch writing all around, but the Regretful Soldier storyline is, so far, my clear favourite. It is so very human in the cavernous horror that is the Neath.
It was so good, in fact, that it motivated me to skip a movie (ParaNorman, alas, I shall catch you on DVD) and buy the Soul Trade, just so I could become a Shepherd and… do the thing for the person in the place.
Yes, that’s how good it was: It made me buy another fate-locked option all on its own.
So far, the Soul Trade was quite fulfilling. It lacks the cohesive greatness of the Regretful Soldier since it’s spread out in opportunity cards, and the jump from being barely involved and then meeting a certain Sour individual is … quite drastic. The story would have benefitted greatly by explaining more about the Soul Trade in general and just -why- Spirifage is such a crime, as the Murder option wouldn’t be such an odd nail out in that case.
TLDR: The Regretful Soldier is, so far, the best thing in Fallen London, and dealing with the horrors of [That Place] and [That Vehicle] is a wonderful step upwards after doing the University storyline. I whole-heartedly recommend getting an Exceptional Friendship just for that story, much less its other benefits.
(Don’t get me wrong, I love the University storyline; it’s brilliantly well-written, but I hate skittering things and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look at a mirror again in the next year or so without thinking about having my eyes torn out. I hate skittering things. And mirrors.)

Thanks!
Having read through all 13 pages on this topic, I am still working on the idea of where to start.
I have been playing a few months, have ~80 in all my stats, and am an exceptional friend for the first time. I have been making a list of my in-story goals and trying to build backwards from them, so that I use my actions and time wisely.
I would like to end up at Flute Street. What are the steps I need to take in order to make this happen? As best I understand it, I need to
[ul][li]become a Scholar of the Correspondence in the Forgotten Quarter, in order to move on to
[/li][li]become Featuring in the Tales of the University, in
[/li][li]order to complete Solving Cases Around London, AND
[/li][li]then the option to buy into the Flute Street content will appear. [/li][/ul]Did I miss any steps? What are the minimum stats I am going to need? Thanks, everyone, I have much to look forward too!

You are correct about all the steps to travel to Flute Street. Keep in mind that Featuring in the Tales of the University has two distinct phases, both of which will complete before you begin Solving Cases Around London.
The only stat that applies for Flute Street is Watchful. I don’t recall exactly what the minimum is, but playing through the prerequisite storylines should bring you to an appropriate level. And, in fact, Flute Street is perfect for raising your Watchful at that level, as opportunities in London to increase Watchful somewhat dry up after the University.
You’ll also need to have some goods for Flute Street, which will be explained after purchasing the content. Nothing should be too onerous to acquire. You may wish to begin hoarding candle stubs now.
Min is 110
Quite recently, after “dealing with” a certain male guest at the House of Chimes in the way only a Spirifer can, I came across a set of brass manacles in an opportunity card. Is this new, or has it simply taken a rather long time for them to pop up? Also, if it is indeed old hat, might someone PM me with what the respective choices in said opportunity card give?
I believe I can just plainly say this, as it doesn’t spoil anything. You can repeat the content (The entire House of Chimes stoyline from the beginning), so feel free to pick whatever. Maybe all three in the long run? I am sure Mr. Chimes will approve of your extended business
I’m not sure this is true.
The luck-based options (or, at least the “right” one, shall we say, as I did not have the opportunity to select the one that wasn’t right) appear to reset the storyline-specific quality and let you do the entire storyline from the beginning. The non-luck-based option, however, just bumped the storyline-specific quality up by 1, and I have not seen any further opportunity cards after that nor have I been able to repeat the story.
Oh? I did not know that. So there you go, luck-based first. Unless that was a bug they fixed. Even if not, my advice, as with most fate-locked content, is to pick which one sounds reasonable to you.
So I’ve gotten my Bound in Diocesan Intrigue up to 5, and I’m wondering if I still need to loiter about in London for a card to show up. I’m guessing that this is the case, but I’d like to make sure that it is before I spend all my time in London when I could be heading off towards the Iron Republic.
Yes, the story will progress when you get another card. I think that in my case it took a day or two to appear. Heading to zee does not reset this quality, so if you get bored of waiting, you can safely go on holiday and expect to receive it after your return.
Gotcha. I guess I can work on getting my second 4-card lodging while I’m waiting, or a zub if it takes even longer. Thank you for letting me know. ^^

I recently completed the Soul Trade storylet and became a Shepherd of Souls. However, I completed the Loquacious Vicar’s storylet back before I even realized that I would have the fate for this storylet anytime soon. I don’t suppose someone could PM me the text I missed?

I’ve gotten my hands on Flute Street. Without giving too much away, which of the final choices are best for grinding?
On another note, I’ve reached Bound in Diocesan Intrigue 4, and the last few Intrigue cards I’ve drawn are to do with the Regretful Soldier. Is this just bad luck on my part?

Probably yes; I got to 5 and I never got any Regretful Soldier after the very first times.
On the matter of Diocesan Intrigue - I’m currently deciding what to do, I would appreciate any hint on the consequences, possibly via PM ^^
From a monetary standpoint, none are especially rewarding. However, they can be good for a few select things. A the time I did it Connected:Rubbery was kind of hard to come by; but with conflict cards that is less so now. Really though the best part is the story; I would stay until you’ve done each one at least once just for that, and then you’ll know which (if any) to grind.

True, the story more than makes up for the poorer rewards. The quest to Flute Street has lent credence to several theories behind the Bazaar. That said, it is a fun place to grind for coins and relics.
While discussing fate-locked content, I have to ask; just how much fate can one earn through the normal game, not counting the Failbetter surveys? There’s 1 point from dealing with the beast in the church at the Docks, 2 points as the conclusion of the Cheesemonger storyline, 1 more point for having the most scandalous romance possible at the Court, and 1 for providing Mr. Sacks with a bottle of the good stuff. What else is there?
