Fate-Locked Content

Having recently bought access to the Soul Trade and Rubbery Murderers stories, I thought I’d ask what other people thought of them, and what recommendations you have to make for future expenditures of Fate. No spoilers, of course.

Personally, I was disappointed with the Rubbery fiasco. It wasn’t a bad story, per se… but nothing was really resolved, there were no real rewards, and no new pieces of information that I hadn’t been aware of. As a regular story I would have been fine with it since it’s at least nicely atmospheric, but for the Fate price, I wasn’t thrilled. The Soul Trade is more interesting, at least partially because the Fork and Timepiece both unlock the occasional choice in storylets, which is a great way to tie it into the story.

Considering getting the Long-Lost Daughter or the Secrets Framed in Gold story next, or possibly waiting to eventually unlock the fate-locked part of the Hound of Heaven story. Any advice?

Rubbery and Daughter were interesting at the time, but ultimately forgettable. The Soul Trade is something you can carry with you always. Secrets Framed in Gold has more ties in the lore - I’m glad I did it - and Hound of Heaven Part 2 is epic and well worth pursuing.

I consider Secrets Framed in Gold to be one of the better ones, so yes, it’s very much worth getting. However, if you found the Rubbery Murders to be disappointing, you’ll probably think the same of the Long-Lost Daughter storyline.

Where did you buy the “Secrets framed in Gold” Story? I can’t find it.

Minor Aunt Spoiler:
I spend real money on fate for the “Aunt in the Brass Embassy” Storyled to save her.
Err, did I? Nothing really happend. Or did I just planned the rescue?

I wish I had paid more attention to the Rubbery Murders as I played it as I’m stuck on the last step and can’t remember what I had done. If you could replay it, like the benefactor storyline, that’d be better. Particularly as now it could be tie in with the velocipede squad corruption.

In general I do spend all my fate on stories. The ones that go on for longer (like the secrets framed in gold, which was a card) or places like Flute Street which are glorious, or the extra breeding of animals are worth it. In fact, I often forget which things did cost Fate as I take it more as a token for the entire game.

My Take, from best to worst:

The Soul Trade
A Day at the Races (now that it warns you that it is sending you to another region and emptying your hand).
A Visit from a Cloaked Stranger(Neathymon)
Set fire to your mirror (travel from Bedlam to the Mirror Marches)
Exceptional Friendship
Uncovering Secrets Framed In Gold
Flute Street (Though, they’ve sold themselves short - it’s two new regions, not one, and the trip there is the highpoint)
An auspicious day for gardening
Zubmarine
Apply a bottle of FF Gebrandt’s Verdant Stimulator
Long Lost Daughter
The Rubbery Murders

Excellent! I did the Races for a while (helped immensely with the Lapidary), and bought one month’s Exceptional Friendship (primarily to see the House of Chimes). I’ll probably save up for the Secrets Framed in Gold, Flute Street, and Cloaked Stranger.

EDIT: So, incidentally, I’m waiting on an opportunity card for the Soul Trade – waiting for the devils to get back to me – but it’s been quite a while, now. Is there a trick to it, or is it only available in a certain location or something?

The opportunities appear anywhere in the city, but some of the storylets are located in Ladybones Road or your Lodgings.

Something I’ve been wondering about for a while now, if you buy a fate-locked option from an Opportunity Card (example: Plaster Saint from the Opportunity Card An Afternoon of Good Deeds), is that option unlocked on subsequent drawings of the card? Obviously if you buy a route with fate, the option to buy it again is gone, but that’s clearly a special case. Or must you cough up the fate each time you wish to pursue that option?

Yes.

I think he’s on to something here. I’d be much more open to buying such options if they where permantly unlocked. You guys should totally do that.

Just to make clear, is buying a Backstage Pass to Mahogany Hall the same as unlocking the Route to it? It seems as a much easier option but I want to make absolutely sure before I use my Fate.

Hi, yes, if you buy the Backstage Pass with Fate you will gain the Route to Mahogany Hall permanently. Remember it’s most interesting for those who have Shadowy or Persuasive 95+.

Yes, it’s the same. There’s a similar option for the Wolfstack Docks, if I remember correctly.

The fate-locked stories I’ve enjoyed the most are flute street and the fate locked bit of the labyrinth of tigers. Monster breeding is certainly quite edifying. I too found the rubbery murders to be disappointing at best.

I do have a question though. If I use fate to do the quest regain my soul after losing it to devils, if I should happen to misplace it a second time, will I have to spend the fate again or is it still unlocked?

Also, I wonder if there is still more to the fate-locked portion of Wilmot’s End that I haven’t explored, because thus far it pales in comparison to the fate-locked part of the labyrinth.

I also found it rather short, and it more-or-less terminates after you pick a side. I can only assume there’s more yet to be written, or that associations with the Face or Teeth will come in handy elsewhere, in particular when Polytreme opens up.

I hope so as well. They certainly have been teases, offering so many destinations on the 'zee and having us wait so long for them to be reachable!

No, you’ll have to spend it again, of course.

The developers have hinted more than once that the game at its current state isn’t even “halfway through”. So, I’m very certain that all the Fate-locked stories will see expansions in the future… maybe even the Rubbery murders.

That would be nice. The soul trade certainly opens up a lot of options down the line, perhaps others will become more relevant as well.
