Estival 2025 Discussion Thread: Hell is Missing

Then you go to the Fate page > Purchase Stories.

No, it’s not there – and it’s not in my list of stories that can be reset, either. My memory is poor but I’m really pretty sure I didn’t buy this one! Interesting.

How many? I tried the 4 digits, I tried the 5 digits, I even went to 6 digits (not in the efficient order) and can’t encounter an elephant where everything is as it should be…

You need exactly 12345 rats. You also need to have solved the Candied Door Hide and Seek.

Believe it or not you need to spell out 12,345 in rats. So you need twelve thousand, three hundred and forty-five rats. It was about 240 Echos, I think.

Ironically enough, after many months of effort overcoming every d___ obstacle in my way, RIGHT NOW is when I FINALLY build the Great Hellhound Railway all the way out to Marigold! Just in time to enjoy the empty field formerly known as Hell! :joy:

I can already imagine the scene between Furnace and my character Six as they get off the train at Marigold:

Furnace’s voice echoes from within her helmet, “You realize our contract only covers rail lines and stations. Destinations are not our responsibility.”

The Six-Handed Merchant puts a hand on their friend and ally’s shoulder, “Quite. Nor would I ask you to rebuild that.” They gesture at the empty field of flowers with a gloved hand.

“I am afraid this is a matter solely for the Board.” Six lets out a long sigh, "I look forward to breaking the news to twenty-three of the most calm and measured minds in all of London.”

Six tries to look forlorn, but they can’t hide the smile breaking across their face for long. The utter absurdity of the situation is contagious, and soon the pair burst out in laughter.

And then there should be a storylet in London where everything is as it should be? Or is it somewhere else? Are there any other prerequisites? I feel lost…

That’s the problem, I found nothing on the Fate page > Purchase stories tab.

Edit:

My Inversion of Local Authority is 77 now, but to unlock Mr Socks, this quality will need to be between 25 to 76. So it seems like I am locked out now, and I can’t complete the little treasure hunt quest errand Mr Dinners sent me.

Who I have found: Mr Swears, Thunder, Nobody, Hot Cross Buns, Lemonade

Who I have might have been locked out of: Mr Socks (no option when Puzzle Damask Scrap is clicked, I have many of them), Mr Generals (sold my excess Blunderbusses till it’s 21, but no option to fire them in the storylets), Mr Lures (nothing on the Fate > Purchase stories page/tab).

Who I believe I can unlock: Mr Tiles. I will travel to Khanate tomorrow, when my lizard agent gives his weekly report.

Sorry, but this year’s Estival seems like a very convoluted mess. Lots of “what have I done wrong” and “what should I do next” moments, with no clear lineation of progression or direction. I recall very few such problems in previous years.

Sounds like some update browser refresh problems.
I found Mr. Lures after I bought Mr. Limonade
In the Hinterlands Fate page - purchase stories for Mr. Lures.
Before that he was not there for me.

Apparently a lot of the people have clicked on the “take your own seat” before turning in any of the clues for the masters hiding places. And it seems it has happened to multiple people here as well. It has a bolded text that you should make sure you have found all the masters you want to before doing it, but the storylet is just right there in the candied door and super easy to just click. With this many cases of taking the storylet too early, I wonder if there will be an opportunity to turn in the clues you found but didn’t return and to gain the unique reward, because this feels like a design flaw or oversight. I did also fear accidentally clicking it every time I went in to turn in a clue.

I feel that’s the same with the puzzle skipping options as well. I know I’m asking to be coddled and handheld here, but I wish all these storylets that let you bypass a big chunk of the text would be somehow visually distictive or have a “are you sure” -point, simply because I’m afraid of my butterfingers locking me out of a story, or just not focusing enough and making a mistake.

I’m stumped. I finished the Tale of the Severed Twelve and it cleared my Kings’ Song. How do I get the rats to sing their squeaking melody to me again? The wiki has the storylet -What- as the source but I can’t find it. Can anyone help?
Also, many thanks to the Wiki folks and everyone posting hints and solutions here. I have been happily following the bread crumbs you’ve all left.

You don’t.

After you play that branch, there’s currently no way to reactivate The Kings’ Song.
I’m sure an option will turn up if we should need it again for anything down the road. Otherwise, why would you want it back in the first place?

Good idea. Maybe email that suggestion to Failbetter? If all “skip-options” were visually distinctive (maybe a different-colour frame or something) from “nomal” storylets, that would probably do its part to help prevent misclicks.

I do think the bold italics were very visible, but it’s good design to have two or three things drawing players’ attention, not just one.

You might be onto something, but it still does not explain why some clues can be turned in after ‘take your own seat’ while others are apparently locked out.

This incongruency points to poor design and/or a lack of playtesting.

I was going to get the Melodies in the Book of Hours run. Guess I did things out of order. Oh well. Thanks for the help. At least now I don’t have to keep scouring the Neath looking for the answer!

I gotta say… this Estival has been a hell of a time for FL deep lore-heads. Like the return of the shortcuts between the four original neighbourhoods - those were early early Echo Bazaar lore.

I guess because “Erratum: Melodies” is back? But not the King’s Song bit. I thought maybe it was a bug because I already got my elephant. (Or did I) But this while Estival is obviously built around loops and repeating and recurrence…

I hope it’s not some kind of hail and farewell type thing!

I just accidentally got Mister Lemonade while doing something totally different in Ealing, AFTER I finished Candied Door! Lolsob
