Election 1898: 13th - 24th July

The actual message from Hannah on Discord was

&quotWe hope you will enjoy your extra days&quot wasn’t really a reason for the delay, just a sort of pleasantry she said as a sign-off.

My personal guess as to the reason is internal lobbying from the support team. Any time you make a significant change on a Friday, you increase the chances that someone will have to come in on a weekend to deal with unintended consequences.

I had completely missed that we (apparently) didn’t have two weeks as usual. Would’ve been a repeat of last year’s Hallowmas for me, seeing as I keep dragging my feet on these seasonal events.

Should I cash in my characters’ accumulated Reputation now?

aaaaand WE’RE GOING TO WAGE WAR IN PARABOLA. awesome

Well I continue my streak of backing the losing candidate - I haven’t been on the winner’s team since Jenny!

The kitty was my least favourite candidate but I guess I better start preparing for war. Or perhaps undermining the war effort…

I knew it was going to be the bloody cat.

OOH!

I’m with you on that. Seems I can basically predict the winner whenever I conclude that two candidates are both OK for me and one I am strongly against: that one always wins. It also worked the other way around - in 1896, I thought both Slowcake and the Princess would be horrible, leaving the Contrarian as the odd one out. Arguably, it seems to me that except for 1896 election (and perhaps the first one, considering the Bishop), the candidate with the most radical and/or aggressive platform had an advantage. Though I suspect that this year, the winner was less of a runaway candidate than usual.

And, I definitely hope there will be an option to undermine the war efforts for those of us who would ally with Glass, the Ophidian Gentleman and the Fingerkings in general. The Viscountess’ full-on belligerent attitude only makes me that much more sympathetic to the snakes…

YES! Yes! I am so happy! More Parabola content!

Hmm… I was hoping for F.F. but I can live with Kitty. At least our spineless, err, very flexible sweatshop owner didn’t made it.

Btw, are we getting the results? I’m interested in how close the candidates where together.

I backed the Mayor I thought was most likely to stake a Master in the heart (Jenny), the Mayor I thought was most likely to flay someone alive (the Captivating Princess), the Mayor I thought would best enable stabbing people in the face (Feducci), the Mayor I thought would contribute new and terrible instruments of industry and war (Virginia) and now, the Mayor who openly ran on the platform of killing things in Parabola.

I. Regret. Nothing.

Great. Now my spouse is sulking. Thanks a lot, cat fanciers.

I feel like the Entrepreneur’s candidacy was rather badly squandered this year. He had, when you get right down to it, the least exciting platform by far. Even if you like rubberies, for most people some rather vague stuff about making art is not going to be as interesting as fighting the fingerkings or resurrecting dinosaurs. And as if that wasn’t enough, his campaign was arguably portrayed in a worse light than the other two, and his election content was relatively lackluster next to what his opponents got. All in all it’s almost like they wanted him to lose.

I think what really killed it was the revelation of his working relationship with Mr. Fires. While on an intellectual level it’s reasonable any Rubbery that high up wouldn’t have stayed their long with a strong impression on Fires, I suspect the visceral distaste of that relationship coming to light drove people to consider ulterior, selfish motives the Entrepreneur may have had for promoting Rubbery-made items in London.

Indeed. And when you add it all up he hardly had a chance.

How long do I have before I lose the Reputation quality?

You have until the 3rd of August.

London has decided - your new Lord Mayor is the Viscountess of the Viric Jungle!

&quotWe have a great deal to do,&quot says the Viscountess. &quotI will call on you, and on all Londoners. We will reclaim sleep and drive back the beasts behind the mirror!

Now that 1898’s mayoral Election has come to a close, there’ll be a brief transitional period while the Viscountess takes up her office.

Once fully situated, a new mayoral card will become available in your Opportunity Deck. The Viscountess’ effect in Parabola will be seen during her year in power.

Look for 1898: The Victor is Announced throughout London and speak to your candidate to wrap up any loose ends. You will have till the 3rd of August (noon BST) to use up any leftover Reputation.

Statistics on the Election will be released within the next few weeks to show you how the votes and Careers played out!

Thank you for participating in the democratic process, delicious friends!

It’s nice to hear that we’ll get some statistics.

And a little feedback for the next election: please don’t lock the chance for talking with the candidates within hard to reach places. Access to the Bone Market or Earling Gardens wasn’t that hard for a endgame player that has somewhat prepared on this. But with a midgame player that has just become a PosI, those places are (at least felt) far far away.

I would also be interested in how this influenced the vote, but I’ll assume that wouldn’t be that easy to figure out.

Although appalled, I’m intrigued as to how they’ll renovate the mayoral office. Kitty doors? Scratching posts?
