Election 1898: 13th - 24th July

For anyone still less than fully decided, here’s my case for the Tentacled Entrepreneur:

In-character: Any step forward for Rubbery citizens is something to be greatly desired. The Entrepreneur has repeatedly shown that the betterment of Rubbery lives is truly his goal in running for Mayor - and he’s already made London a safer place for them. Though it’s certainly questionable that he’s relying on Mr. Fires and the corrupt Special Constables to do so, giving him the authority of the Mayor’s office will enable him to do more on his own, and therefore depend on them less. The fundamental transformation he promises is something London desperately needs.

Out-of-character: Of the directions for new stories promised by the candidates, I’m most excited about the prospect of a Rubbery Renaissance. I want more in the vein of Helicon House, the Cloud-Filled Sphere, and the Underground Organ. Also, I find the Entrepreneur the most interesting character of the three - the moral ambiguity that makes me slightly suspicious of him in-character actually kind of makes me want to see more of him out-of-character. The picture I’m getting of him is that he’s genuinely kind but flawed, and I’m curious to learn more about how he reconciles his goals with his methods. I’d also like to see how the artistic and reformist aspects of his campaign both enhance each other and potentially come into conflict. We don’t have a lot of (or maybe any?) individual well-developed Rubbery characters, and this could be a good chance to get to know one.

Which is all basically to say: OTHATAROOTH!
No, Vote Viscountess! (Also, I genuinely fail to understand why people think F.F. Gebrandt is a moral person, and why her pursuit of Science! is a good idea. Frankly, for me, she is the most despicable candidate.)
It’s because Gebrandt is the first ‘conscientious capitalist’ we’ve really got in London. She sees a niche in the market and seizes it, but doesn’t exploit it. Selling laudanum and tinctures of vigour is like selling over the counter painkillers, it’s really up to the person taking it to moderate their dosage. Whether or not most people can be trusted to do that is another question.

There’s also the fact that the ‘love potions’ she sells are fakes. Well, why does she sell them in the first place? Because by cornering the market for such a detestable thing and intentionally sabotaging it, she hinders those who might actually try to start a business selling mind-altering drugs by preemptively pushing them out of their sales. Also, those who buy love potions, try to use them, and then realise they are fake aren’t exactly going to expose Gebrandt publicly, as they’d then be admitting they were trying to force someone to love them.

As to why her personal brand of science is ‘good’, well, most forms of scientific progress can be used for both the benefit and detriment of society. Increased understanding of biology and chemistry leads to better medicine and healthcare, but also potentially opens the door to things like chemical warfare and bio-weapons. Scientific progress is morally neutral, as far as I see it, and it’s the people that have to be held accountable. Gebrandt’s desire to resurrect creatures to ease society’s burdens is not that much different from the historical domestication of animals and, regardless of how you might feel about modern conditions, animal husbandry is a key part in basically every culture’s history. It is possible to domesticate, raise, and use animals for labour ethically, it’s just rare. Also, we don’t have automatons in the Neath (yet) so the alternatives are limited.

All of these things make me really like Gebrandt as a candidate, but on the flip side… OTHATAROOTH. It’s quite compelling, really.

Seriously. Like the Dean of Xenotheology, I like both the Entrepreneur and Ms Gebrandt and would honestly be happiest if they could both be mayor, somehow.

I’ve only backed the winning candidate once in all the elections. I really hope I get to say it was twice soon.

You’re not even going to give us a hint about which candidate to avoid? :)

I’m such a swing voter right now. I’ve campaigned for FFG for fiscally conservative reasons but I very much vouch for the TE on liberal grounds. Hmm… what does 1898 London need the most? An honest capitalist to push progressive industry, or a compassionate alien to push progressive labour laws?

As cute as the cat is, she only wants war, and we’re voting to be cannon fodder for her cause. Unless she’s magically removing the Nightmares menace from all our lives, with some Hesperidean Fruit from the Is-Not, then Nightmares will still be a staple of life in London for the foreseeable future.

Well, we’re already cannon fodder in the opposite direction, given our nightmares are pretty consistently attacking us.

Am i missing someting? i want to vote but have no idea how to do so. If the elections are open now, how do i? Is in the message boards or in game. Can someone enlighten me please.

You pick a candidate to support, from either the &quotThe Mayoral Election 1898&quot pinned storylet, or from that candidate’s card. That’s basically casting your vote. You can still change it up through the end of the Election.

Voting happens automatically when the Election ends on Monday. Each player earns votes for their declared candidate equal to their Election Career level, plus Notability. Thematically, you’re not just casting your own vote, you’re drumming up support from London’s citizenry for your candidate.

I think it amounts to having up to 34 effective votes; ~20 from Campaigner and ~14 from Notability?

Wait, not today? I realy am confused. Even the title of this thread seems to indicate it ends today.

The 27th is when they reveal the results. I think today might be the final day you can do election related stuff, aside from maybe electoral opportunism, based on the thread title.

In their Discord they’ve stated it will be open until Monday, as they wanted us to enjoy extra days.

Well, that’s confusing-

Should this be up to 15 from Notability?

Plus however much giving the Great Hellbound Railway’s support is worth.

You’re not even going to give us a hint about which candidate to avoid? :)
I’m voting for the Entrepreneur of course!

Oh, rats. I’m not telling my spouse.

Well, I finally decided. All my votes are behind Science this time. Mercy for the Rubberies being belaboured by other Rubberies will have to wait, and the war in Parabola can have all my Starveling cats as drafted pawsoldiers for now.

I’m really not sure who is winning at the moment. Unlike most of the elections, I can’t till if there’s a candidate that’s running away with the vote.
