A Humbly Incomplete Guide To Notability

i don’t remember if i posted this yet but Vision of the Surface (can be converted to Touching Love Stories for a small amount of MW’s)can be grinded at the sisterhood island if you have the Bag A Legend Ambiiton. its about 1.3 echos worth of it per action. but you’ll need to be away from london, so that might be risky if you’re near the end of the week. it’s probably better for earning echos than making waves though.
Don’t forget On a Heist. 2x Burglar’s Progress in MW on completion. I have gotten 12 CP in 11 actions. Plus 20 CP shadowy and 20E of Touching Love Stories, with a shot at 62.50E of Searing Enigma. It’s a great grind. There is a small risk of failing, of course.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information! I was unaware that heists could be this profitable, or that they could make waves. The thing is, I thought I needed to buy Inside Information to be reasonably safe, but that turned out to be overkill for a 5-card hand. Overkill and largely a waste of time to use my Gang of Hoodlums for a second round of Casing (5 Actions), and then using 20 CP of the 36 CP of Casing to buy 4 x Inside Information (4 Actions).

Quite intensive activity though, at least the way I do it: In order to return all the ‘good’ cards to the deck as soon as possible, I only begin a heist with a single card in the deck, and then try to get back to the game every ten minutes to make sure that I never have to draw two or more cards at once. Because if the first card drawn is a really good one, I want to have a chance to draw it the second time as well, and that can’t happen if the rest of the cards are automatically drawn before I have a chance to play that first card. Using this method I only had to fill my hand on one of my six ‘unprepared’ heists, and two of those cards were what I would call ‘neutral’, so I wasn’t in any serious danger. I think I spend an average of 15 Actions on a heist though, and 11 Actions seem to be the absolute minimum: Embark on a heist (1), Casing (5), Begin heist (1), three cards where at least two give 2 x Burglar’s Progress (3), and then A Prize Achieved! (1).

has anyone mentioned asking the Sardonic Music Hall Singer to help you yet - you get Making Waves and if you choose the Amused Lordship option a Presbyterate Passphrase as well.

Is anyone willing to comment on how orphanages work? Or are they just like salons?

I’ve got an Orphanage - unlike a Salon where you can get the connections and things needed to raise your scheme in game, you need a lot of money to raise your scheme as you need clothing and tinctures of vigour and echoes; or winsome dispossessed orphans or connected Urchins and echoes. Once you get your scheme high enough you cash it in for MW. There is also a fate-locked option which gives a very good pet - she’s a great stat booster.[li]

I’d like to add the three ‘sideways’ conversion that give MW as well:

Incendiary Gossip -> Memory of Distant Shores (1-10 CP)
Tale of Terror -> Compromising Document (1-8 CP)
Zee-Ztory -> Strangling Willow Absinthe (~5 CP)
*get wine at veilgarden, convert it to honey (gaining a small amount of MW)
*convert the honey to romantic notions, then to VISION of the surface (the latter gains MW)
*convert to mysteries of the elder continent (gaining MW)

The bigger question is whether to keep converting around the 50:51 circle, and how far.

Edit:
I think the best thing to do might be running wine -> honey -> notions -> memories -> mysteries -> incendiary gossip -> distant shores

converting through the 50:51 circle is probably inefficient? but i think it’s worth converting Memories Of Distant Shores to Souls Then Tales… eventually ending up with Favours In High Places(the final conversion gives a fairly high amt. of MWs) like this:

1879 Wine -> Honey -> Notions -> Visions Of T.S. -> Mysteries Of E.C. -> Incendiary Gossip -> Memories Of D.S. -> Brilliant Souls->
Tale Of T. -> Compromising Docs -> Stolen Kisses -> Favours In H.P.

however i imagine some people might hesitate converting Tales Of Terror to Compromising Docs, since the Fidgeting Writer story can be very profitable, and also a decent source of Brass Rings and Collated Research. i still have access the university, so in the long run, i can still grind lots of Cryptic’s to convert to Tales.

Also the final conversion from Stolen Kisses to Favours uses up a fair amount of Connected The Great Game (20 CPs), so you might want to think twice about it.

I obtain most of mine from producing Bejeweled Lenses and then using them at the Royal Bethlehem.

Boxful of Intrigue will gain you most of the components, profit and Connected Criminals you can use to acquire the diamonds. Though you can also buy diamonds at the Bazaar Side Streets.

might be old info, but the conversion table in the wikidot looks a bit outdated.

there should be 4 “sideway” 50:51 conversions that give MW’s:

Incendiary Gossip -> Memory of Distant Shores.
Tale of Terror -> Compromising Document.
Zee-Ztory -> Strangling Willow Absinthe.
Vison of the Surface -> Mystery of Elder Continent.

tried it for several actions , and they seem to give on average ~5CP of MW. not worth the actions put into converting the other 9 types of 3-tiers to get them. don’t take my words for it. didn’t note down all the changes.

the sideway conversions seems more useful for coverting excess Strangling Willow Absinthe wine bought from the opportunity card to sometime else you want. or convert all the way to VotS to start/continue the line of conversion(1879’s … to Favours) i came up with previously. the 50 pence profit from each 50:51 conversion is quite nice for a non-POSI. and don’t need a luck test to gain a small profit from that unlike most of the other onversions.

The wikidot site is very much out of date. Still useful for some things as it’s a bit better structured than the main wiki, but don’t rely on it too much.

I actually found this to be quite an effective way to raise MW quickly - the full carousel of side conversions gives an average of 1.53 CP of MW per action (+ 6.5 echoes worth of items)

AFAIK The highest BDR that can be obtained without Fate and special events is 21:

Hat: 1 from various items
Clothes: 1 from various items
Gloves: 1 from Lenguals
Weapon: 2 from Iron Republic Journal
Boots: 1 from Kingscale boots
Companion: 2 from various
Affiliation: 4 from God’s Editors
Transport: 2
Ship: 2 from Yacht
Home comfort: 1 from Shrine of St Joshua (Midnighter)
Club: 4
Total: 21

Then there’s bonuses from special events like the Tattoo etc.

So if your goal is to build up Notability fast (Maybe you want a Master’s Blood?), it might be helpful to become a Midnighter.

Does Benefit from Flattery make sense? Is the MW gain worth 1000p, or could I do better with that ~7 actions elsewhere?

Just for the making waves, i would say no.

On the other hand, it’ll give you also a really good redution of Wounds and Suspect, other than the making waves.
Consider that also the other player will have the same reduction (about 10 cp, if i’m not wrong)- this makes the flattery quite useful.

Otherwise, if it is just for the MW, i would advice you to use the Dinner (but, again, your guest may have a good amount of MW, need for help, and the game is a social one.)

Is there a way for a non-posi to benefit from making waves beyond flattering others?

One of my alts has been rather successful at Shroom Hopping and now sports 30 MW. I gave a few to my main through flattery, but frankly the exchange is really inefficient and I don’t have enough free eventings to give enough to raise my main’s notability. As such, the healer is just going to eat them unless anyone has any ideas.

On a related topic, Third Walker has three free evenings and piles of MW to burn, if anyone is interested.

As a note, there’s an option to grind MW in the Clay Quarter as well by assisting with research - it cycles with the airs of London, however.

Is that guide still up-to-date ? Do you lose half of your making waves level each week ?

It is mainly up to date - there have been some new opportunities added to some of the lodging cards. But yes you do still lose half your making waves level every week.

Thank you, my lady. And what would be the best way to grind making waves if you’re banished from the court ? Is there a reliable, relatively free storylet that can gain you making waves (in the same fashion as “life of the mind”) ?
I saw that life of the mind only gives 1 CP of making waves, and that seems very little, it means you have to spend a lot of actions each week if you want to keep your Notability at a somewhat decent level (like 4 or 5).

The lodging options - especially if you have a salon give larger amounts of MW. The item conversions mentioned earlier in the thread are reliable and you do make a small profit on the side-conversion cycle.

If you are happy with 1CP - I like the honey-dens in Veilgarden and the wine to honey deal. I then convert the honey to Romantic Notions and trade those on the Mr Wines card back to wine.

I usually just grab a Polite Invitation Opportunity from my Lodgings; +21 CP MW. Assuming I’ve dropped below Notability, it generally gets me to the minimum… well, not quite… but it used to when I first became Notable.

I don’t have a Salon, I’ll look into that, thanks. In the meantime, I’ll probably use the Veilgarden option, I guess.
What lodgings give that polite invitation already ?
