I saw up to 7 once. On a different forum, though.
I need access to Mahogany hall to twice augment an Aged+Enlightened egg, but it is not yet unlocked. My ‘Name Whispered in Darkness’ is now 6. Will the card to gain one-time access to Mahogany hall appear?

You cannot force this card to appear.
But cannot you unlock the route in your lodgings by spending a bunch of items? They could remove this option, though, it existed before the Names were a thing.

I don’t think you can unlock directly from the Lodgings now. The Wiki stated the conditions for the card to appear. Standard frequency.
If I’m reading the wiki right, you should be able to just click Mahogany Hall on the map to access the storylet to unlock it.
If it appears on the player’s map, which IIRC it won’t until they find the route to it. So very early players won’t have access to the egg augmentation from there.
So I’m hoping that the card will appear and I can access one-time for the augmentation.
I think it’s not a card, but an option once you make the Cats or Bats happy - then there’s a price to pay for access.
They’re talking about one-time pass, when you can’t return.
Oh, whoops. :)
So, I recently made a new account and I am making BANK (for new character standards) on this event.
Here’s my strat, requires basically NOTHING to start (at most you need 1.2 echoes):
- Buy 40 glim from the bazaar (if you have some already, this just gets better)[/li][li]Buy the fuzzy eggs, as many as you want @ 40 glim each[/li][li]Give the (unaltered) fuzzy eggs to De Gustibus in Ladybones[/li][li]Enjoy up to 2.5 epa on a fresh out of prison character (down to 1.9 epa if you need to buy 100% of the glim per egg)
It’s not great compared to actual grinds or anything I know, but 1.9-2.5 epa for a fresh character seems notable to me.
Especially since there are NO CHECKS and you only need access to the initial areas (no unlocks required)
PLUS, half of that epa is in whispered hints, so I’m personally saving them and going to buy the bazaar lodging when I get enough.
And even then, I’m still getting 0.65 epa in echoes alone after the cost of glim.
It’s like printing my own money!
Well… I managed to get into Mahogany Hall, I needed to buy some gloves, hats and critters. Siding with bats and Glass for now. Did my Mahogany Hall egg augmentation.
What should I do while waiting for the eggs to hatch? Crack open eggs and collect more bones? Send eggs to another player for hatching? Raise ‘Speculation about Whitsun’?
Seems like the choices are limited for non-Fate players.

Seems like the choices are limited for non-Fate players.[/quote]Just go about your usual business for now. Whitsun is one of the more hands-off seasonal events as you only really need to focus on getting/hatching the eggs. Raising ‘Speculation about Whitsun’ and acquiring bones are only useful if you have your own newspaper on Doubt Street or access to the Bone Market, respectively. The next big event is the election, which is usually around mid-June, and the more notable you are the more weight your vote has, so you could try and focus on that in the mean time.
EDIT: Forgot that the last two elections were pushed to July to add a little time between events. Advice is still relevant. Probably.

There’s not much to it even if you do use fate. Whitsun is not very mechanically involved, which can be a nice change of pace.

It’s also not an irritating RNG-fest like some events. cough FotZ unconvincing cough
I have a hunch that multiples of the same creature might be needed for later years.
If the later years involve items like Affiliations, I hazard a guess that Failbetter’s writers would use the excuse of there being parties that are interested in specimens. Give them the specimens, and they give the Affiliation items in return.

Quick question: if someone sends you an egg, but you reject it (e.g., if you already have the companion), do they get their Amber Ha’penny back?
Similarly, if you send someone an egg and then cancel the invitation, do you get your ha’penny back?
Yes on both.
Not sure about rare success outcomes, but these are what you can expect from cracking open those partially invigorated or enlightened percipient eggs.
Crack open Partially invigorated percipient egg
Success
A stone’s fossil
A hammer creates a neat hole in the shell. From there, you can pry away pieces till you can see the contents – a furry bundle that rapidly deliquesces on contact with air. The egg’s fluid turns a purple grey, releasing a strong aroma of crushed dandelions and brine. All that is left, once you’ve cleared up, is a shiny stone. Could the nascent creature have had a gallstone?
You were fortunate!
Invigorating Treatment
Your ‘Invigorating Treatment’ Quality has gone!
Partially Invigorated Percipient Egg
You’ve lost 1 x Partially Invigorated Percipient Egg
Memory of Distant Shores
You’ve gained 5 x Memory of Distant Shores
Ostentatious Diamond
You’ve gained 1 x Ostentatious Diamond
Failure
Embedded
Shards of shell fall away, crumbling into your carpet. Yolk tainted albumen soaks into the paper you’ve set down for this very purpose. Whatever was growing inside is slowly liquifying: there are sticky pools of blood, patches of fur, but nothing that could identify the creature. Stuck on the inside of the point of the shell are a handful of rocks. Were they part of the growing animal? Or some flaw in the laying process?
You were unlucky. Better luck next time…
Your ‘Invigorating Treatment’ Quality has gone!
You’ve lost 1 x Partially Invigorated Percipient Egg (new total 0).
You’ve gained 5 x Flawed Diamond
Crack open Partially enlightened percipient egg
Success
A disarray of limbs
What a mess! A stench rises from the tangle of corpse-parts at the centre of the egg. Once you’ve acquired a scented handkerchief through which to breathe, you can sort through the pile for anything of value. Most are clearly to be discarded, but the thing had a tail that, at least, could be passed off as a Tomb-Lion’s. After all, who’s ever actually seen a Tomb-Lion?
You were fortunate!
Your ‘Enlightening Treatment’ Quality has gone!
You’ve lost 1 x Partially Enlightened Percipient Egg (new total 0).
You now have 1 x Tomb-Lion’s Tail.
Failure
Vicious
Perhaps it is for the best that you smashed this egg now, and didn’t let it develop to viability. What creature could have three such stingers? Even now, they dribble with poison. Living, such a thing would undoubtedly pose a threat. Now, however, it only menaces your dustpan.
You were unlucky. Better luck next time…
Your ‘Enlightening Treatment’ Quality has gone!
You’ve lost 1 x Partially Enlightened Percipient Egg (new total 0).
You now have 3 x Jet Black Stinger.
Since I’m done with hatching eggs and will not spend my ha’pannies, I shall henceforth crack open as many partially enlightened percipient and partially invigorated aged eggs before the event ends.
Enlightened percipient: tomb lion’s tail, jet back stringers (failure)
Invigorated aged: carved ball of stygian ivory, ambiguous eolith, headless skeleton (failure), monstrous orb (rare success).
