I was in a discussion with a friend today who has never played Fallen London and was trying to describe how well Correspondence, Red Science, or other laws really capture a distinct, forceful feeling.
My favorite example is a certain Rubbery Calligrapher who expresses “THE BITTER JOY OF BEING ACCEPTED, BUT ONLY TO A POINT”. My heart goes out to the Rubberies for that. Also, just wow. Doesn’t that hit you like a brick from the Flit?
So, fellow Londoner’s, I’m curious if we could have a little moment of appreciation for the coolest, most powerful, or most touching Correspondence phrases you’ve encountered. I’d love to hear your thoughts below, and I plan to eventually compile a master list of every phrase I can find and put them in a comment as well.
It just makes me think that at one point, the Sapphir’d King was absolutely bombarded with messengers, living missives and other forms of communication from it’s subjects until even a being that is for all intents and purposes a god decided that it needed a specific Logos to ward off unwanted visitors.
I vaguely recall liking the phrase at the end of Secrets Framed in Gold, but don’t remember what it was. I probably wouldn’t repeat it if I did, since it’s at the end of a fate-locked story.
The lore wiki definitely doesn’t have every known Correspondence phrase (off of the top of my head, there are some from having the Cricketer in your lab, as well as the ones dropped in Firmament and this year’s Estival) but it’s still a great place to start!
Honestly, it’s hard for me to pick just one, but I will always have a soft spot for “no drop-in meetings permitted”, if only because I want to draw it and stick it next to my computer at work.
