Weekly Questions, Beginning 17/04/2017

Best ways to Make Waves? I apologise if this has already been answered. I need Notability 5 to specialise one of my stats.

I imagine it’s already been answered, Notability being as integral to the game as it is, but it’s not like that means it’s a bad question.

Here’s a short, non-exhaustive list of ways I like to increase MW:

-Expeditions give quite a lot if you donate your findings to the University. If your Watchful’s high enough to get at least 2 progress at 100%, the action-sink isn’t too terrible.
-The card &quotCity Vices: A Rather Decadent Evening&quot gives MW equal to your Scandal when you play it, and some other goodies as well, although the MW is what makes it worth playing at all since it lowers Connected: Bohemian by quite a bit. Keep your Scandal at 7, equip the +Scandal items to play it, and you’ll get a nice 9 CP every time you draw the card (which is often).
-The Holy Grail of Notability is getting a Salon or Orphanage, but the investments you have to pool into getting anything out of them are tremendous. Just setting either one up needs a Handsome Townhouse as well as a wide range of other things, and then advancing your scheme costs a lot too. It’s undoubtedly the best way to increase your MW, though.
-Converting certain half-echo items at a 50:51 ratio to other categories gives some MW. It’s relatively cheap, since the only thing you’re paying is the opportunity cost of not doing other things. You could get to 5 notability doing nothing but this.

I, too, have a question. Has anyone ever tried getting Dramatic Tension to 77, or, God forbid, 777 on Hunter's Keep? There's a lot of fuss about the well there, and it does have an UP option...

I’ll add that “a polite invitation” opp card (and its carousel) grants a good deal of MW, and it’s the only way to gain a personal reccomendation (besides buying it at the bazzar side-street), which is necessary for a lot of POSI-level stuff, including getting a salon.

If you haven’t been kicked out of the Empress’ Court yet, “The Life of the Mind” is method of Making Waves that isn’t dependent on cards or waiting for other players.

Here’s a link to the wiki guide:

See one of the half-echo items’ wiki page (e.g. http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Tale_of_Terror!! ) for the full conversion cycle, as well as which of those conversions gain making waves. Going all the way around the cycle averages somewhere around 1.5 MW per action, and gives 0.5 echo/action. For low levels of notability, that is a reasonable way to go.

So, I’m at the end of the university storyline. I think I know what will happen if I accuse the provost (kicked out of the university), but what if I blame the cryptozoologist? Will I be still kicked out? Are there different rewards? I’m a bit torn on this decision RP-wise, so any help will be appreciated

You will not be kicked out (and you can buy your way back in if you blame the provost) I think the rewards are the same except blaming the cryptozoologist gives some connected masters.

Item reward is different, but with equal value. There are slight quirk bumps involved. University connections are affected either way (though one is worse, as you can imagine), and there is the Master’s bump Suinicide mentioned. All in all, things are reasonably equal, but you can find full details on the wiki, should you be so inclined.

Sanity check here: if I’m
Grinding for Letters of Mark, assuming I’ve all of the Storylet actions unlocked (Closest: Great Game) are any of the cards quicker than the storylet actions?

Every action that increases Counting the Days increases it by the same amount (5cp). Card-based actions do not grind your Mark of Credit any faster. Some card-base actions provide extra benefits (menace reductions), but they do not hasten your meeting with the Numismatrix.

Query: when is the next purge of Deactivated Acquaintances due to take place? I have two unfortunate souls on my list, and the last post regarding this process dates from 2015.

kindly,

I have become a Legendary Charisma! Woo! And I used up all my Notability in becoming so. I can no longer beckon the Amanuensis at will, now, so does that mean I have to wait for that card to turn up in the deck to rebuild my Notability?

Yup.
