Hey folks! Here’s this week’s thread for short questions.
If i’m grinding secrets for SMEN what’s the best way to go about it?
Two quick questions:
One - I’ve seen some conflicting reports about the requirements to fulfill the "London’s Sinew" quality for Paramount Presence. Some sources say that to choose the "Advancement of My Friends" option requires 100 influence, while other sources say only 90 influence is needed. Which is correct?
Two - I’ve also heard that a Paramount Presence can now raise their stats back up to 215 with Notability? Is this true? And that all four stats can be reset to 215 with just one sacrifice of 15 Notability?

It used to be 100, the requirement is now 90.
-
Yes and yes!

Thank you kindly, Barse! Looks like I might have to start planning for that Paramount Presence grind after all then.
Probably converting Cryptic Clues. There are a lot of good sources of those in your opportunity deck, but for grinding them you’re best off if you still have access to investigations at the University. Get some Investigating and CC from talking to department faculty, then "Raid a Message-drop" in the Flit. If you don’t have access to the University then you’ll be relying on "Eavesdropping" in Unfinished Business in Spite.[li]
This is more to resolve a long-running question in my household: is there a character in Fallen London that is an analogue to Lord Byron? And if so, who?
As Lord Byron was from an entirely different era (he died in 1824), then I would find it as unlikely as Shakespeare or Chaucer showing up. But you never know.
He did die young. If he survived the Greek War of Independence in Fallen London’s timeline, he would have been in his early seventies at the time of the Fall.
Question: What’s the best way to grind Souls without Renown: Hell?
My character Aquila is a Soul-Shepherd & thus needs to gather a lot of souls, but doesn’t associate with devils, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to gain Renown to unlock the Unfinished Business option. I’ve been robbing the Brass Embassy to get those souls and infernal contracts, but is there a more efficient option?

Is there a difference between choosing the Amused Lordship, the Implacable Detective, and the Bishop of St. Fiacre when entering the Dilmun Club? If so, what is it?

Depends on how you define efficient. Thieves’ Cache expeditions in the Forgotten Quarter have a 50% chance, give or take, or uncovering a cache of 500 souls, in addition to the other rewards. If you’re capable of reliably using the boldest option, the expedition requires six actions (one to start, three to make progress, and two to deal with the results). If you count in the actions needed to gain the requisite Criminals favour and supplies (assuming you’re using Docks favours for them), then it takes 14 actions and a small amount of Rostygold. Since favours aren’t really grindable, per se, you may not want to use this as your sole option for souls (pun not intended, I really promise), but even as a side gig it’s an avenue that an active Soul Shepherd probably doesn’t want to neglect.
There’s some slightly different text but no appreciable difference, at least until and unless they expand the storyline.

The game seems very generous in handing out Criminal favours to me these days, I seem to have more than I know what to do with most of the time. I tend to go expeditions to the Forgotten Quarter just to spend them because the game wants to give me more and I already have seven. I don’t play scientifically, though. I just do what I feel, rather than worrying about efficiency.
But that said, expeditions have been so fruitful on that score lately that I haven’t bothered with any other methods of soul-collecting, and I’m still swimming in the things.
That is good to hear, and yet frustrating. IC, I have connections to all three characters (ID: 1895 Election, BoSF: Ambition Heart’s Desire, AL: Dilmun Club) and OOC I am very attached to all three characters and can easily achieve all three of their sponsorship. Thanks for the quick answer. It looks like I will have to postpone choosing until I can figure out who I like the most. Immortality, see you later.
It is to be noted that the reminder text does imply a chance to switch later. It does use the word "betray," which seems a little unpromising, but we really have to wait until it happens to see what develops. In the interim, at least we know there will be some vehicle for changing our sponsorial relationship.
It’s also not like the three are adversaries. They’re all members of the Dilmun club, and they’re in it together. Only one can sponsor you, but it’s not implied to be any kind of great slight to the others when you pick one. You can have more than one mentor!
But all are implied to have different views on what to do if the Dilmun Club achieves its aims, in which case they may not be in it together at the finale. (I would say that is a virtual certainty, given the use of the word “betray.”)
Still, it hurts to choose just one when I personally like all three. It may be a bit selfish of me to say I want to see all three ‘sides’ to the story. It especially doesn’t help that switching sponsors in the future may involve possibly betraying them, something I am really not inclined to do to any of them. However, your answers have made me a little more at ease when it comes to choosing. In the end, we are all in this together. Now, who to choose…
Oh, great. Now who I choose may actually have a noticeable effect on the story. How can there be different sides to immortality? At this rate, I might as well postpone indefinitely until the story is further updated. However IC, delaying makes no sense and OOC, I am curious about the Court of the Wakeful Eye. This is frustrating.

Do what all the rest of us have done: choose best based on the information that you have at hand. If further information arises in the future, then act on that information when it comes. There’s no use speculating about unknowns in the here and now, though, and no use delaying when the refreshments are so tasty.
If that absolutely fails, then carefully print out each sponsor’s vignette, arrange them equidistantly around a circle, and play Spin the Greyfields.
