Weekly Fallen London Questions, 15/01/2018

Here’s this week’s short questions thread!

Hi! Newly minted PoSI here. Working on joining Stuffy’s; I have the Favour in High Places, the two Wine Cellars, and 2 out of 3 Personal Recommendations.

I’m guessing the fastest way (aside from buying it at the Bazaar) to accumulate the necessary Stolen Correspondence for the Personal Rec is to steal from the Duchess’ chambers? There’s no problem with this, I was just hoping to avoid doing it 2 more times (buying the remaining necessary SC at the Bazaar) because of the repetition. (For context, I have the 30 compromising docs, 4/6 Stolen Kisses, and 86/150 Intriguing Snippets.)

There is an Unfinished Business option in Spite that lets you get Stolen Correspondence quite readily.

I have said this to inexperienced players before, and I will say it again: do check the wiki! This page, in your case.

The wiki’s really quite spoiler-free, and you don’t have to waste time waiting for a response on the forums on gameplay matters that have already been around for years. I, for one, know that I had been checking the wiki for my first year in this game.

Does ending your search for the Name remove your &quotA Question&quot quality, or is that left intact? The wiki seems to imply that it isn’t removed, but I wanted to check: I’m not ready to proceed with SMEN, but &quotA Dream of Dark Waters&quot is cluttering my hand. Of course, I really do not want to have to do the Grieve Grind (I only got &quotWhat is Forgotten?&quot via Mr. Sacks), so if I lose &quotA Question&quot by ending my search I’ll just have to suck it up and deal with it…

If you want to get rid of “A Dream of Dark Waters” the easy way is to choose “Cry out.” That will move you forward in Seeking, lock the card, and let you go about your business.

Hear, hear!

I also want to add a tip: the classic editor is a lot faster to work with, after one has figured out the syntax for the wiki’s page source code.

The current editor is easier to understand and work with, but it loads its user interface and previews slowly, and on some days, completely borks.

P.S. The admins might grumble at you for using the classic editor though; the current editor makes a statement about any changes made mandatory, the classic one doesn’t.

Nah. I’m only editing the source directly and have no problems with others doing the same (carefully, of course).

And I (try to) monitor all edits to the wiki, so no worries if mistakes are made - they are easy to fix.

Say, dov, do you know why the current editor borks on some days?

Like I said, I only use the source editor myself.

What do you mean by &quotborks&quot? Any specific examples?

The current editor just fails to load. It times out.

Hmm. No idea. Just tried this and it works for me, using Chrome (we’re talking about the Visual Editor, right?)

It’s working right now, of course - but at other days, it just borks.

I just redicovered Flash Lays. As a Shepherd of Souls, I am often menace-free and the hard option seemed quite profitable to me. What do follower Londoners think?

My only and probably biggest issue is that I don’t feel and FL vibe in it; bit dry. Was fun when I did them first times, but I prefer to not go there; few times per year (unless needed) is enough.

Thank you! I’d been reviewing the long list of sources in the Wiki, but had somehow missed the mini-list at the top. This will save me considerable time. Appreciate it!

OK, fair. But my question stands: does giving up the search for the name also wipe &quotA Question&quot, or is that left intact (much as Weeping Scars, Stains on your Soul etc. are)?

Giving up the search now presumably wipes everything that you have obtained through Seeking.

By the way, the wiki entry for the option to end the search under a &quotBad End&quot might not have been updated. It is supposed to wipe everything, like the entry for asking Mrs Plenty to free the player character does.

But that also doesn’t wipe A Question, at least according to the wiki. Having not given up Seeking, I don’t know anything to say otherwise.

Well, it should. Do keep in mind that the information that had been furnished there had been provided by another user, and not Failbetter staff who know about this. That user might not have set a question, and if that option does wipe out the question quality, it won’t appear for the player at all.
