The game told me that you no longer had the qualities needed for this challenge.
My plant is up for a contest of mysteries, if anyone would care to challenge it.
I just had the same thing happen, both as the sender and the receiver of the challenge. Both parties definitely have the appropriate qualities. Perhaps something has gone awry?
How odd. No one on IRC could confirm, but I was just able to send a challenge to Black Bloom, who was the person I couldn’t accept a challenge from earlier.
I’m definitely leaning toward a bug at this point.
EDIT: Report sent, although with Sunless Sea’s success on Steam, it may be a while until they can look into this.

If a player has more than one challenge for the same contest in their messages (either sent or received) they’ll be moved up after winning, or moved down after losing (unless it’s a Contest of Strength). That will make them ineligible for the contest they just won/lost until they’re back to seeking that one (through winning or losing other contests). Could that be what’s happening? Seems reasonable that players who post here might receive more than one challenge before checking their messages.
It used to be that the contest could still be held, but if a player was no longer seeking that contest, they wouldn’t be moved up or down, just get the reward for winning or have their Attending to the Needs of a Singular Plant reduced for losing. When I told a friend about this he suspected that it was a bug, so I reported it. And apparently it was an oversight when they added the inviter requirements, so the game is now supposed to check to make sure that both players are eligible for the contest when one of them attempts to Accept a challenge. But I suppose something could’ve gone wrong with one or more of those fixes, making the game check for the wrong number.
