Ratties seem to have slim pickings these days.
This week’s new item: Elemental Secret, each costs 3125 Rat shillings.
I don’t think this item has any use unless you want to do the Mr Eaten storyline. Is it worth spending items at the Rat Market to get Elemental Secrets?
Not until some other use opens up, I don’t think it’s worth prioritizing. Elemental Secrets used to be rather difficult to obtain, so I might jump at the opportunity just in case. But these days they’re fairly reasonable to obtain in the Viric Jungle.
You have a point, but the Viric jungle option is more like an upconversion.
This is similar to Ray-drenched Cinder: you can either buy Eyeless Skulls directly from the Rat Market and convert them, or you find the Eyeless Skulls elsewhere. It’s just a matter of convenience.
The Elemental Secret is purchased at a fair price. So, the answer is yes, it’s worth selling items to buy it. It’s always worth selling any item that the Rat Market will buy, and Elemental Secret is no worse than any other payout. (Except maybe Fabulous Diamond, which is extra good because of the Worm potential)
I forgot to check the items at the rat market this past weekend, was there anything interesting on sale? Anything that had never been on sale before?

Just the Irrigo Goggles, for about the fourth time.
From what we can tell in the Gazette, this upcoming weekend will have a Reported Location of a One-Time Prince of Hell, which is a bit more exciting.

Thank you very much!
This weekend, the New Year weekend:
The Reported Location of a One-Time Prince of Hell is available at 15425 Rat shillings.
I can buy one… maybe two? Those weekly rewards of Uncanny Incunabulums for my profession are finally useful.
But why do you want one, let alone two? There have only ever been two uses for them in the game - one for a particular Ambition (which also provides the required item) and the once in a decade use for the Great Clearing Out.
15425 Rat shillings is actually 17.5e less than the item’s sell value, so if you can get them for that price and don’t care what item you get, you should definitely buy that one
But is that worth it after the action cost of cashing in all those Incunables?
I’ve heard on the discord that the unlock requirement and the meta text actually doesn’t match the amoj y of Rat Shillings that you lose. So be aware of that.
Cashing in at the Rat Market is always worth it. Five Uncanny Incunabula can be sold to the Bazaar for 62.5 echoes for zero actions, or five actions can sell them to the Rat Market for 850 shillings (22.5 EPA, exclusive of sourcing the Incunabula), or one at a time (five actions) for 1000 shillings (7.5 EPA). (The four extra actions get you 15 extra echoes, so they’re 3.75 EPA. If you can beat that with whatever else you would be doing, it’s worth cashing them in five at a time.)
Anyway, yeah, always sell to the Rat Market when you can, even if you don’t need anything they sell. It’s a huge value add. Even if you just let it turn to Rostygold. It’s certainly the best source of Rostygold, as well as everything else that’s sold with no markup (all the 1-shilling items, Preserved Surface Blooms, and many/most of the rotating weekly items).
Hoarding.
Also, the beauty of this game is that you never know what future new uses the items have.

As a hoarder, the GCO was extremely validating.
Last Whitsun I got a second Sealed Copy of the Crimson Book. I remember, quite distinctly, debating myself that this was a frivolous, irrational, and compulsive decision. "It will be a long time before I get another chance to acquire one, best to grab a spare, just in case." "In case of what?" "Just in case." "There is not, and has never been, a use. What possible emergency could cause you to need a Sealed Copy of the Crimson Book?" "Just… in case."
Two months later, Mr Pages needs something precious and rare, and I just feel so damn smug. Something so dear, so difficult to acquire, where shall we ever fi–WINDMILL SLAM. No, no problem at all, I’ve got extras. Very easy choice.
So yes, get one. You literally never know. For real, the Queen just declared that years are repealed. Who knows what tomorrow may bring?
And I don’t mean the figurative "tomorrow," I literally mean the day that begins in a few hours. Something new will happen and the range of possibilities span from a mild hangover up to having to put the laws of physics back together like a broken jigsaw puzzle.
Dear FBG, you might want to have a real-time countdown timer for the Rat Market. It’s annoying to get kicked out of the Rat Market just as you are about to purchase something. Now I will have a lot of Rostygold in a few hours time? Lovely.
What’s this? Something new this weekend! Praise the RNG!
Here’s my story…
I was trading in 105 Uncanny Incunabulums one at a time, towards the end I was pressed for time so I traded in 5 Uncanny Incunabulums once, I got a total of 20850 Rat-shillings.
I was about to make purchases (Reported Locations) when it reached the time the Rat Market closes and those rodents chased me out.
Now I have 208.5k Rostygold.
I’m a bit upset about not being to purchase my Reported Locations, but I found out that the net echo worth of 208.5k Rostygold is more than 105 Uncanny Incunabulums combined!
208.5k * 0.01 = 2085 echoes > 105 * 12.5 = 1312.5 echoes. I’m not sure if this quantifies as a ‘profit’ considering the number of actions taken.
Are there instances in the game where you can use such an obscene amount of Rostygold?
It definitely counts as a profit - I turned in over 100 uncanny incunabula just for the rostygold, basically anything sold to the rat market (except fourth city echoes) gets you back more in value than you put in. So in terms of echo value, you’re at about the same place you would have been if you’d bought those reported locations.
…there isn’t much use for such huge quantities of rostygold though. You can use it 10 or 50 at a time to get favors on some cards, but I can’t imagine how to spend hundreds of thousands of ‘em without just selling to the bazaar.
You’ll be able to buy favours on the Young Stags card for the foreseeable future, not to mention hiring assassins and sending names written in Gant.
And yes, selling to the Rat Market is hugely profitable. Selling items 5 at a time is more profitable than one by one, due to the actions saved. (The extra shillings you get from going one by one are worth 3.75 EPA, to be specific)
