The Rat Market

Same for me. I was excited to see the new seasonal item. I guess the temporary disappointment of those of us who already had the waders is worth the gratitude of those who didn’t.

I think this item was available on the first week the Rat Market was introduced?

It was expensive though. I couldn’t afford it.

I’m surprised it hasn’t reappeared.

That’s one of the ones that requires a confluence of Rat-Wind & Rat-Moon. It’s a 1-in-16 chance each week, so it’s not unusual that we might go a long time without seeing it. In fact we’ve seen less than half of the possible combinations! (7/16)

Although I think we’ve seen repeated combos two or three times. This is the second time Irrigo Goggles are for sale, and I believe the Stainless Gloves have appeared more than once.

Huh, we’re not seeing a lot of movement on the turn-ins for the past few weeks either. I don’t need it yet, but I’m waiting for Parabolan Parables to come back around.

What items you can sell is deterministic, on a 12-week cycle. Parabolan Parables will cycle back in three weeks (on Dec 24th), and stick around for three weekends (until Jan 9th).

In fact, I’ve lost count of how many repeated ‘combination’ items we’ve seen in the past weeks. At the very least for the last month, there has been nothing new to get on the market, and we’ve basically been cycling between Stainless Gloves, Forgotten Slippers and Irrigo Goggles for some time.

This repetitiveness makes the Rat Market rather unappealing to me, particularly since these three things are the ones you only need a single piece of each. I wonder if perhaps the possible combinations are wholly random or somehow depend on the False-Season, and may include different ones at different times of year. And if they are all equally likely and we’re just on a random bad luck string, or if the combinations offering the actual 312,5+ Echo items are rarer than the ones with equippables.

At least this may be useful for the lower tier players, giving them a chance to scramble for funds to afford the Slippers or the Gloves. Can’t see anyone actually buying the Irrigo Goggles, thou…

Winter season’s item is the Box of Saintly Whiskers, costs 10k Rat shillings.

I think the Rat Market is also a good way to stock up on your filled Mirrorcatch boxes and various consumables e.g. Nightsoil and Surface Blooms, where they might be harder or more expensive to get elsewhere.

Of course, getting that wearable equipment is always nice.

Well, more Zeefaring is always welcome.

It’s fun to collect, but I really hope that as a speculative investment it’ll actually be used for something eventually (it definitely will, it’s just strange we’re getting so many zeefaring items even though there’s almost no uses for it)

Indeed. It would make sense if it had more uses during the actual zeefaring, especially in the Snares since they’re specifically unlocked by higher Zeefaring. As it stands, having played Written in the Glim and being a Zubmariner, I don’t think I have any meaningful use of Zeefaring left at the Zee itself…

Well, hopefully, there’ll be at least some Monstrous Anatomy items coming somewhere down the line, as this is currently my Achilles’ heel of a stat…

Stats on this new thing? I’m not buying until my Parabolan Parables come back around, but I’m curious and it wasn’t on the wiki earlier.

It’s on the wiki now! Seven of St Eligius' Very Own Beard Hairs - Fallen London Wiki . It’s an affiliation with +2 watchful, +1 respectable, +1 zeefaring . It’s the only zeefaring affiliation.

Which reminds me that it’s odd the Crew of the Galatea doesn’t provide zeefaring.

I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps it’s too obvious.

The crew was just from far before they introduced zeefaring at all. I dont think they added zeefaring to many (any?) old items.

True, they haven’t done so, but it certainly seems possible.

Technically they added Zeefaring to items that used to boost An Experienced Zailor, but that might only be the two editions of M. Demeaux’s Advice for Captains

I am in two minds whether to obtain nightsoil and surface blooms from the Rat Market or from other ‘traditional’ sources. I need quite a lot of them to progress with lab research and railway.

Is it more economical using the Rat Market?

The Rat Market is a good way to acquire Surface Blooms. Their purchase price matches their Bazaar sale value, just like Maniac’s Prayers and suchlike. (The economics of Blooms are a little strange because they have a bad sell price for Scrip in the upper river. But that doesn’t apply when you’re using them in the lab.)

For Nightsoil… the Rat Market isn’t economical. But even so, I think I would use the Rat Market as my main source pre-railway.

The Bone Market is the main pre-railway source of Night Soil. And it’s &quotefficient,&quot in that the value of nightsoil matches the face-value of your skeleton. Except that it’s hard to acquire bones efficiently, so the face-value of your skeleton isn’t a fair accounting. Just grinding Captivating Ballads and turning them in for a 15%(?) net loss sounds reasonable in comparison.

Once you start unlocking the Railway, even only the first station, then better sources of bones open up. The butcher shop (upgraded), Excavation cards, and embiggenment projects in the lab all give Skeleton Value that more closely aligns with the investment it takes to obtain them. So once those become available, the Rat Market convenience tax isn’t as appetizing.

I used the rat market to get started. As PS Garak says, it’s a convenience tax, but worth it in the beginning.

Note that you also get nightsoil from graduating the Profound Student; training him up quickly can be worth the loss of research. I can’t remember the exact amount. 8 or 9?
