I have defeated Colonel Pommery twice already, when will those bloody sorrow-spiders stop kidnapping him in the middle of our shootout?
Is it because the Colonel is intended as training only? Or do I need to defeat him a certain number of times? Or with a high-enough "running battle?"
Pommery will always be kidnapped by spiders. Many of the black ribbon will suffer similar fates. The exceptions are captain vendrick and fedducci.

Thanks for the help. So I guess I should take the Balck Ribbon as a training ground for Dangerous until I am ready to kill capitain Vendrick
If your goal is to be a killer, yes. Killing Vendrick will give you Bringer of Death, which opens one route to PoSI and also gives you a special Opportunity Card which allows you to become a serial killer when you go insane.

Which Opportunity Card is that?
I think it’s called "You’ve been killing people again…"
I think it only appears in A State of Some Confusion and only if you have Bringer of Death.

Man, the things I miss by not going insane after becoming a POSI
I know, right? It’s been weeks since Drake went insane. I kinda miss it.

I think part of why many of the duels are not-quite to-the-permadeath is to allow more pacifistic characters the chance to raise their Dangerous, gain some qualities, and experience an interesting story without feeling like a total monster.

I think you’re speaking of Skeins of Blood.
Its text does begin with a phrase that sounds very much like your quote.

Until the end, in which case the more pacifistic you’ve tried to be earlier, the more of a monster you’re probably going to end up feeling.
(Trying to be the nice guy in the Black Ribbon gets my vote for the most feel-bad bait-and-switch in the game. Can you tell?)
Yes, that’s the one! Oh, the haberdashery!

Given the context, this may be the most disturbing thing I’ve heard you say. However, far be it from me to condemn a pun.

Huh? Why? You really don’t have to kill anyone, in either the Black Ribbon or anywhere else in the game.
I was thinking of the Vendrick situation. I suppose, come to think of it, that you can use certain other duelists to bypass that mess, if you don’t mind loose ends.
I thought the idea was to work your way up the sequence of fighters rather than beat on old Pommeroy repeatedly…

Duelling Vendrick is completely optional.
And dueling Vendrick specifically to the death only happens if he thinks you’ve killed the Drowny, which is also optional.

In a way, yes, but no specific duelist is mandatory.
Each duellist has their own cap as to how high fighting them will raise your "A Fearsome Duellist" quality. So it’s much more effective to start with the easier opponents, until you’ve raised "A Fearsome Duellist" enough that beating them won’t raise it further and then move to the next opponent.
This means you can "bypass" any specific duellist and always fight the next one (though it will likely take more actions). And specifically for this thread - you never have to actually kill anyone.

I got tricked by this one, I chose the fight to the death option with the Captain because he was the only one (aside from Feducci and I was tired of grinding) I hadn’t fought and all the other FTTD battles had just resulted in comedy text on success.
To find I had properly killed him was a bit of shock.

But it was what he wanted. The Black Ribboners are all characters who are seeking true Death but cannot seem to find it.
