In a way, yes, but no specific duelist is mandatory.
Each duellist has their own cap as to high high fighting them will raise your "A Fearsome Duellist" quality. So it’s much more effective to start with the easier opponents, until you’ve raised "A Fearsome Duellist" enough that beating them won’t raise it further and then move to the next opponent.
This means you can "bypass" any specific duellist and always fight the next one (though it will likely take more actions). And specifically for this thread - you never have to actually kill anyone.

I got tricked by this one, I chose the fight to the death option with the Captain because he was the only one (aside from Feducci and I was tired of grinding) I hadn’t fought and all the other FTTD battles had just resulted in comedy text on success.
To find I had properly killed him was a bit of shock.
But it was what he wanted. The Black Ribboners are all characters who are seeking true Death but cannot seem to find it.
Thanks for salving my wounded conscience! I’d forgotten that bit of lore amongst all the grinding. As a Black Ribboner I too must be seeking true death which would help explain my frequent boat trips.
