Seeking Mr Eaten's name

That’s Seeking in a nutshell…

I’m happy to make sacrifices, but it looks like it might prove problematic if you lose a candle inside. I mean, could it lock you out of seeking?[li]

You lose St Destin’s Candle, so you’d have to grind another one.

Doable but so, so annoying.

It can’t lock you out of seeking, but if you gained obscurity it can severely delay you.

Yikes. The notability grind to get to 12 was pretty rough. Oh, well! (pun not intended)[li]

It won’t let you go in at all if you have too much Obscurity for the Notability path. The most it can do is remove tattoos, which not everyone may have.

Does anything actually happen if you take off your own severed head?

Nope.

Goodbye, I have gone North, seeking the question, Who Is Salt? If anyone is willing I would love the other two endings as a pm

Well, running around without a head is something most people don’t want to experience, but this is SMEN, so I guess our tastes are different.

Spacemarine9 tried removing his Own Severed Head and reported that nothing happened.

What would it cost me to get rid of all my lodgings through Seeking? I’m not sure it’s worth it if I have to give up all my hoarded items and whatnot, or if I’m stuck with Obscurity or the Torment destiny, but if it’s moderate monetary expense (few thousand echos and a bunch of actions), that might be acceptable.

It will mostly cost you time, or thousands of Appalling Secrets (plus some Searing Enigmas).

To reach that point of sacrificing lodgings (or connections) you need:

  • Seeking 24
  • St Arthur’s candle
  • 3300 moon-pearls

Getting to Seeking 24 can be slow and cheap, or fast and expensive. The slow road means using Unaccountably Peckish cards, which can give you Single point of Seeking a week (if you know how to manipulate them right). The fast road involves burning lots of Appalling Secrets - the higher your Seeking level, the higher the cost and the tougher the Watchful challenge (i.e. expect to burn your secrets for nothing more often than gaining a point of Seeking).

Getting St Arthur’s candle requires spending quite a lot of actions chaining, scarring, and staining yourself, and betraying 7 people/companions. That last part can be easy if you find willing victims who have never been Seekers, or expensive. All in all, this phase will cost you 7-14 Searing Enigmas.

Then it’s just a matter of going to the Nightmare Carnival with enough moon-pearls and choosing to get rid of all lodgings or connections.

You forgot the 150 memories of light for the nightmare carnival. (I’d also mention that Arthur’s costs roughly 400 echoes in miscellaneous, manditory stuff in addition to the seven enigmas. The biggest expense is the patent scrutinizer, but the night whisper is potentially more problematic.)

Also, Arthur takes 1000 cp (~14 levels, IIRC) of both dangerous and persuasive when you get it. Have fun with that!

Hrm, I’ll probably do it near next year’s christmas then, so I can regain a 5 card lodging not long after. I presume I’ll need to regain my soul in the meantime too so as to stain it.

Now if only I could get rid of my respectable landeau/clay sedan/gymnasium…

Hello! I just obtained St. Gawain’s head and obtained my final needed point of SMEN from Winking Isle. So all in all I’m ready for my final preparations.

However, I don’t necessarily go North right this minute. I’m sort of thinking of waiting for the next Ambition update (I didn’t get Obscurity). I recognize it might take months or even years before this update, I’m not going to claim or demand it to be sooner, but I am rather invested in that story and don’t really want to grind everything up again when I could just start a new one entirely. Should I sacrifice myself to the North right now, or wait?

It’s up to you. The next Ambition update is probably a ways away, though exactly how long depends on which Ambition you have. There’s things to do in the meantime of course, seasonal content or silly grinds or incomplete stories. Personally, I would start a new account and leave the old one to rest until I had a reason to dust it off. But, again, it’s all up to how you want to play.

If you aren’t itching to cast yourself into the abyss I’d recommend at least waiting until the Feast of the Exceptional Rose. We don’t know if there will actually be any Seeking related content there. But in previous years there was an impossible option to get The Name tattooed on you that we all (or at least I) am very curious about. I have a character poised on the precipice, waiting to find out if that option is still there. Your close enough you might as well join me.

As far as ambitions go, I wouldn’t hold your breath. I’ve been here about 4 years now and in that time my ambition has updated a grand total of once. Unless Failbetter has been setting us up for a surprise completion of all the ambitions, I don’t expect to see them end any time in the next few years at least. That said, there’s no limit on the amount of time you can spend gazing into the void. Wait if you will. Seeking isn’t going anywhere.

Are there any high level watchful challenges further along in seeking? I’m almost to St. Arthur’s, and I have watchful 200 plus 49 from my gear. Will I ever need that much? (I’m done trying to drown secrets). If not, I think I’ll sell off a bit of gear so I can afford BDR gloves and boots to help with Destin’s.

You will need Watchful 200 on Winking Isle.
