Savour the Fruits of the Zee!

Because if she was fixed the festival would only take one day instead of two weeks?

The only reason you would have to participate next year is to get the items you didn’t get this year, and the only reason not to get all the items is because you gave up in frustration

And if she was fixed you wouldn’t need the menace reductions at all, because you just wouldn’t do any of the other festival options.

Hehe… my Subtle was 5, it was my lowest quirk. ;)

By the way, genuinely curious how to raise Subtle to 15… Mahogany Hall?

The actions used for travelling to London and back to Mutton Island… now that’s 10 actions eaten up.

Quirk change from increasing your Renown goes to 15, which is where most of my 15s come from. Three factions increase Subtle when you gain renown, and none decrease it. None of them increase Forceful, which is why I didn’t have any

In that case, they could probably tweak the mechanics of fishing itself . . .

The whole festival is just very badly designed; I shouldn’t have to rely on a wiki or player-base to know what numbers I need, in order to get which items, as another example . . . players seem forced to come up with complicated charts to know what to get and how and where. That’s not even touching on the awful RNG of the Lady, as well as the flawed use of quirks (too high and you can’t get a low enough score to get lower items, for example), and the RNG of the fishing itself in what options show (making higher items very difficult in some cases when some options won’t show).

Also, the 5 action cost of getting to the island and back seems a bit much, especially if you need to get back and forth, and especially as it seems to only take around 3 actions to set zail to the island without the special option? How does that even make sense?

It feels like the game has evolved and changed over time; for the better. It’s now fun and easy to zail, and we’ve lots of end-game content, and the election has been retired to make way for new events, and Hallowmas was reworked too (for better or worse) . . . the Zee Festival is exactly the same as what it was over five years ago, and I think it’s really overdue an update. The fact the special option to get there takes more actions than regular zailing on your own time -? It kind of shows that it’s just a second-thought, really. It’s like &quotoh, yeah, we have this content ready to go, just make it available with one click and call it a day&quot, and . . . if that’s the case, why even have the festival at all?

I’d rather it be retired so they can focus on new content, if that’s the case.

Just my take, though shrugs

The 5-action ferry is a holdover from the old zailing system. Before Zeefarer, a normal trip to Mutton island outside of festival time would have taken double digit actions. Clearly it’s now a bit out of date and only relevant for players with no ships.
I’d rather it be retired so they can focus on new content, if that’s the case.
I’d love if they just borrowed Sunless Sea content: If you randomly encounter the Fruits of the Zee festival there,
on every subsequent visit Mutton Island will be completely deserted. You can gather a port report and speculate with your crew, but everything else is gone, gone, gone. &quotMark my words: this is the work of the Fathomking. And His complexity only takes what’s offered.&quot

Will we sift through ruins for clues? Will we fight off drownies and zee creatures? Will we sneak or charm our way into the court of the Fathomking? The options aren’t limitless, but there are definitely several. Hell, we could still fish up a Strange Catch and lug that around.
Hmm it is annoying that a failure on fishing check raises that quirk. Every increment = +10% chance success. You are actually penalizing those who want to score a lower number strange catch.

Each attempt of fishing already offers a binary choice of two quirks. If a player wants a better success rate, the option with a higher percentage chance of success would have been chosen anyway.

Very strange mechanics.

Seems like it has not been thought out properly beforehand, like that latter half manic speeding up during the Great Sinking/Digging event earlier.

Public transit always takes longer than driving yourself, if you have the option. That part makes perfect sense.

I’m glad I got all the items this year; I kept missing FotZ since it’s at an awkward time of year for me generally, so that’s that ticked off! Love the new crown. Less enamoured of the whole Parlour of Virtue; no wlw content at all? u.u I wanted to do it since it referenced the Clearing-Out but idk if I can be bothered grinding for all those stories on the offchance there’s something interesting!

I already had all the unique items available this year, except for the Vicountess’s Collar, which I got, only to learn that having it, I could not attempt to get the Viscount’s collar as well! It was a role-play decision, mostly, so I’m not annoyed.
However, I was annoyed to learn that I could only present three stories to Mr. Wines THROUGHOUT THE FESTIVAL. Once you do that, there’s nothing of interest at the Parlour of Virtue’s tent. I would have preferred a situation where I could keep offering stories, but only three stories would get rewards; the rest would get only text. Or some other arrangement that would make the Parlour’s tent interesting for longer.

I’m still grinding that frustrating RNG on and off for the Mari Lwyd and maybe the wimple, when I can be bothered. I succeeded in not quite dying and also got the crown at last!

The parlour… well, it would be nice if there were some small nightmare reduction, akin to the wound reduction from rubbery lumps, and taking a nice rest on the cushions could have done that.

I had no problem with the stories, that was fun. Made 2 great ones and one tragic, nice rewards. Making more for a smaller reward like romantic notions or gossip could be fun too.

I have to say, I’m surprised at all the festival hate! I never had a problem getting all the rewards before I got bored, maybe because I found the fishing pretty fun and didn’t mind having to do a bit extra to get all the items without too much obsessing over catch numbers, the hope of getting some cool new item this round made it worthwhile. And while the ever-increasing stress of menaces climbing while desperately searching for the Hooded Lady is a little aggravating, I also found it exciting enough to not put me off too much. It helps that usually we get quite a lot of good items from it; this year, without any new items, it lost a lot of its interest and I got bored pretty quickly. But assuming some new items, I find it a fine once-a-year diversion.

If you don’t obsess over catch numbers, you won’t get the cool items. If you didn’t know the goal was to roll as low as possible, you would probably never find the Scrimshander Carving Knife. Even the absolute minimum catch has only a 20% chance of getting it, unless you somehow drop multiple quirks to nearly zero.

Maybe some of the frustration is trying to get it all done at once? It’s a 2 week festival and there’s still a week to go. So my main has been off building a zub, training with nuns and then hunting killer nuns, hunting seals, breeding beasts, doing lab work, and popping back to the island for a day or so.

It WAS frustrating when I spent three days catching, waiting for the lady, and getting nothing for my level 7 catch multiple times in a row. But with the breaks between it’s less annoying.

The festival is quite fun when you get started on it for the first time ever. The fishing is new and fresh. The wreckers’ cove is full of exciting possibilities, every catch brings something new. You don’t mind exploring the options at the celebration and dancing around while you wait for the hooded lady to put in an appearance. In previous years you could also chat to the mayor.

The festival is no longer fun when you’re trying to fish out the last unique item, handing in catch after catch and not receiving it because RNG has decided it is Not Your Day, and Mrs Plenty keeps refusing to show up, menaces keep climbing higher and you just want to murder every drownie and Mary Lloyd operator that gets in your way.

In that sense it was almost a mercy that there was no new item to fish for this year.

This is my first event, and I got 7/10 of the items.

Remaining: Semi-automated Mary Lloyd, Wimple of Sinning Jenny, Scrimshander Carving Knife

The thing is… many of my quirks are 8 or 9 or 10. I had to go back to London to drop a couple of my quirks to zero to try again.

Life on Ladybones Road > Associate yourself with a different philosophy (Subtle to 0)
The Clay Quarters > Recruit Clay Man labour (Magnanimous to 0).

There’s no reliable way to reduce quirks on Mutton Island, and every fishing fail attempt increases that particular quirk a little.
The mechanics of this is frustrating. Not the RNG randomness.

Hmmm… this was a Strange Catch 7.

Seems like they had broadened the range for an item which was supposed to be Picking 10-12. :)

I’ve never been particularly frustrated in previous years. Probably because I wasn’t trying to get something that I knew was useless, like the Wimple!, and this is the first time that there was no chance of hitting something else worthwhile if I missed the number I was going for.

Since there’s usually been several items to get, for most of the time it felt like if I didn’t get what I was aiming for I’d probably run into something else; so I only found it started getting tiresome once I’d gotten most of the goodies and was just fishing for that one last item I just couldn’t get and had to start looking up the catch numbers. But I’d say I’ve had more aggravation at other festivals before.
