Coming back early would be great. My quirks are too high to get a 3 or a 4, and 5 only gives me a 20% chance of getting the item I’m going for.
It’s not really crucial to pair them up any specific way - if my cursory exploration of the mechanics is right, then for each of the three ways each character can be paired, there’s one "best", one "middle", and one "worst" option. But all that does is set the starting level of how well the date is going, which is very easy to change while you’re chaperoning. Getting the initially "worst" option to the best possible conclusion only takes two more actions than the initially "best" option, and it’s equally easy to turn the initially "best" date into a disaster if that’s what you’re trying to do (both good and bad dates have rewards). So mainly I’d say just go based on personal preference (though you can find which couples start at which levels on the wiki if you want). You can also cancel a date midway through if you feel like it.
I submitted a bug report, after posting about it yesterday, but haven’t heard back yet.
The fix seems to be retroactively turning every "Sinning Jenny’s Forsaken Wimple" into a "Sinning Jenny’s Forsaken Wimple!". I just rolled a 12 Picking and can’t get an even more excitable duplicate, unfortunately.
Why do you want the wimple anyway?
I’ve been off fighting nuns and now I need to die, so I think I’ll pop back for another round of fishing and collecting menaces tomorrow. The trick will be to get not QUITE dead on the island. I need to get on the boat ride, not get taken home with a stat loss!
For Caroline’s part, she is fond of and respects Sinning Jenny a lot, teaches at her school, and sees her as someone good she should be more like. The token would be meaningful to her.
Very perplexed with how and when the Hooded Lady offers a unique reward in exchange for your catch.
I can accept a little randomness similar to ‘The Airs of London’, but this is just pure ambiguity.
Many times when I forced her to appear, she offers rags and other expendable items, regardless of the level of my catch.

It’s highly randomized as shown on the wiki. Basically your catch level is modified when you go into the Cove and you have to just hope.
That said, getting everything (while not leaving Mutton Island) is entirely possible in a week’s worth of grinding. Having the festival be two weeks is gravy.

Look on the wiki, there’s a value table.
Every catch value have a "range" of possibilities based on its level, that’s what determine your rewards.
It’s totally possible that it will be too high or too low for certain items, so it’s useful to know if you should maximize it (for example for the rector, that needs >25) or stay as low as possible failing quirk checks (for example to get Jenny’s Wimple or the Carving knife that need 10-12).

Thank you very much for this!
I got the Reactor at Strange Catch 10.
Since the Forsaken Crown and Mary Lloyd both need Picking 26-28, perhaps hitting Strange Catch 7 or 8 yields the better possibility of hitting those numbers. 42.8% and 25% chance respectively.
Wimple and Carving Knife need Strange Catch 3 or 4, maybe 5… unfortunately many of my quirks are 10. I need to bring one of them down.
I’m getting 70% at Forceful 3. I thought about bringing quirks down, but Forceful is the only one under 10, so I’d have to bring them down a lot. You need to fail at least twice to get a 4. I’m considering giving up on the Wimple.
Keep hearing about a reactor. Didn’t realize Mutton Island had gone nuclear.
We’re always the last to know.
Why do you want the wimple anyway?
Because I’m a collector of oddities and I have to have one (or more!) of everything? :)
There’s no practical benefit to having the wimple; it’s not best-in-slot for anything and - til now at least - there hasn’t been any use for it apart for a brief action during a previous FotZ. No great loss if it’s too much bother to get it, in other words.
My Subtle is 5. 90% chance of success. Everything else is 100%.
I think either the Curate or the Chef can bring down your Hedonist via a normal option. Hedonist can be easily pumped to 15 at the University. anyway.
How many actions to drop a quirk to 0 and raise it back to 10 or 15 afterwards? To raise my chances of getting the Wimple from 20% to 50%. I thought about it, but I doubt it’s worth it
PSA:
If you want to drop a quirk in a jiffy
Go back to London, Ladybones Road.
Life on Ladybones Road > Associate yourself with a different philosophy
Select either:
Publicly defend a liberator of books or You adhere to no one philosophy – and you’ll make that clear to all
and feel free to switch between the two as necessary.
Subtle will drop (-3) and another quirk Daring will increase (until max 10)
Then go back to Mutton Island and happy fishing. If a Subtle challenge appears twice, you can fail twice.
Now you can obtain Strange Catch 3 or 4.

(Have raised Forceful to 10 since with corresponding reduction in Austere.) All my other quirks were / are 10-14.

You can succeed every check and still have a 20% chance. You just have a better chance if you can get a catch of 4 or 3
And at -3CP per action, going from 15 to 0 would take 40 actions.
It took nearly 30 actions to make the Hooded Lady show last time I tried. 30. The RNG element is making this unbearable. WHY does she NEED to be RNG dependent, when the fishing itself is already mostly RNG dependent? Why can’t her and the menace reduction be fixed?
