Reaching Scarlet Saint

Just made one!
Let me know if I’m missing anyone!

If you’re kicked out of the Court it won’t allow you to return to content prior to that point. You may wish to use the access code anyways, however. It’s a free bottle of Airag.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. I’m REALLY looking forward to trying this code out, but I’m hesitant due to the fact that raising the quality back to its fullest potential involves going to Court, and I doubt this code erases my ban from it. Though I’m reluctant to break the game, at least there’s the possibility that Failbetter support will be able to correct any error that should arise.

EDIT: I’ve decided to simply take the complementary bottle of Airag. I’m direly wanting to reach Sainthood, but I don’t believe it to be worth breaking my game over. Thanks for the help and advice, everyone.

I knew I was going to regret being banished from court. I assumed I’d always have laudanum for hedonistic company.

While I remain trapped in Hell, I’m plotting my next move - increasing my connected: hell (which ironically I am not able to do here).

Do any of the scarlet saints (or devil-lovers) have any advice on grinding this connection? I usually avoid it at all costs because devils have many conflicts.

The main approach I used was getting Casing in the Flit, then trading it to the devils for Connected.

[quote=Hypersomnus]I made a map to help me with the Iron Republic grinding. There is a very useful branch toward the end that will set your scandal below 8 while you are leaving (scandal being much scarier because of the quirk reduction in the tomb colonies). I hope you all will find it useful.

Here is the current version of my map.

EDIT: I should clarify that all the data came from the wiki and things may have been changed without the people who help with the wiki noticing.

In fact, a single go-through can reset all four menaces to safe level, with some minor requirements (high steadfast, high shadowy, bunch of brass rings), spoiler for detailed path:

day 1: random -> 8 (pick facelessness to go to 12) or 12
12: [needs steadfast] -> 17, nightmares=3
17: run for it -> 19, nightmares=2
19: [hoodlums] random -> 32, suspicion=6, or 27, suspicion=2
a) 32: stuck in -> 34, wounds+1
b) 27: ->34, random suspicion+1 or scandal-2, nightmares+4
34: a firm hand -> 38, nightmares=6
38: ->40, wounds=6
40: debate law [shadowy 217] -> 51, wounds 2
51: [heartless] -> 71, nightmares 1 OR 64, scandal=3
a) 71: going elsewhere -> 78, suspicion+1
b) 64: [have 5 (6?) brass rings] -> 78, suspicion+2, 75 proscribed materials
78: packed in: -> 99, scandal=3

scandal: 3
wounds: 2
suspicion: at worst 6 and 3 cp
nightmares: 6 and 1 cp

Upconverting bottled souls in quantity (then upconverting amaritas in quantity, because t2 to t3 conversions are +250ppa).

I’m hoping that these menace-reducing paths work since my scandal is 21 and wounds is 27! But I’ve achieved austere 15 at last.

I am now a proud scarlet saint!
Thank you everyone in this thread for the helpful information and tips, without which I would never have completed this!

Huzzah! Congratulations!

I finally got all the stats required, but I’m not sure I want to spend Fate (or have the money to) to change my old status. :/ I had a lot of fun building up my stats though! Thanks :)

So for anyone still checking this thread, has any way been found to increase hedonist past 10 if you are already banished from the court?

If you have 12 or more, there are ways involving the Counterfeit Head of John the Baptist or the Ornate Typewriter.

If you have below 12, you can raise Hedonist above 10 relatively easily with repeatable carousels if you still have access to:

  • the first part of &quotTerm Passing&quot at the University (before murder investigations get underway)[/li][li]the Empress’ Court[/li][li]getting closer to the Melancholy Curate and his sister

If those are all locked, there are a few non-repeatable methods to get above 10 if you happen to still have access to:

  • In Search of a Stiff Drink[/li][li]various levels of the &quotMaking Your Name&quot main stat trackers

If you don’t have access to those either, the only other options I’m aware of are:

  • paying fate to play singles croquet with the Quiet Deviless (this will cost 10 Fate total to take Hedonist from 10 to 12)[/li][li]possibly a rare success during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose in Mrs. Plenty’s pleasure garden – we’ll have to see if this works when the feast rolls around[/li][li]selling your soul during other holidays (also costs Fate – much more, although you get items)

If you’re doing Hedonist first, there is also an option (made explicit) at the end of Flint which will set Hedonist to 14 and cost you all your Austere.[li][/li]

So, I have also joined the exclusive ranks of Scarlet Saints! When do I learn the secret handshake and get the lapel pin?

There’s no secret handshake, just a general aura of detached debauchery :P

That doesn’t sound very austere, Snow…

[quote=Optimatum]That doesn’t sound very austere, Snow…[/quote]It is if you do it right.

One has to have the austerity in life, so that the debauchery can be properly apreciated…

otherwise it’s french fries without vinagar.

Oh dear. And here I was celebrating finally getting those Intimate of Devils cards to disappear by selling my soul to one of them. Am I truly stuck hoping the feast option isn’t capped at 10 or waiting for holidays to repeatedly sell my soul for exhorbitant amounts of fate? I don’t suppose there’s any way to lure those devils back, is there?

It would be so greatly appreciated if the Failbetter staff could provide SOMETHING for the 10 - 12 deadzone that one isn’t highly likely to be locked out of, and doesn’t require both spending large amounts of fate AND annual scale waiting. Maybe bump a few of those many many 10 capped options up, or drop the requirement for using heads down.
