Not necessarily. You could restrict the range to a fairly narrow one if that’s a concern.
Or you could also require a hard minimum with one of the main four stats to attempt the renown check.

sadly watches her Connected: Urchins, which she’d been increasing every available chance for IC reasons, turn into a measely 3 Renown. SIGH.
I’m just sad that I have to put off going to The Mind now for probably 6 months or so as I gather 40 Urchin renown.
All right. So I got my Stormy Eyed to 19 , went in the Mind of a Long Dead God… and found out that to get out, I have to drop it back to 0. So if I ever have Urchins 40, I need to build it back up to 19 to claim the item, right? And I cannot get out of the Mind of a Long Dead God without losing Stormy Eyed. Please tell me I am wrong…

Sorry I cannot tell you that you are wrong. You need to drop to 0 to exit and then get WtTS to 18 wait for the card to start the Stormy-eyed story, which sets WtTS to 0, and then rebuild both to get back into the Mind.
…what if I do not play the card resetting WtTS? Can’t I just grind stormy eyed up at Mutton Island?
Unfortunately you need to be Stormy-eyed to use the Mutton Island option.
…I see. If I knew that I would have waited before entering the Mind. Oh well, it seems I will also grind docks renown, which was impossible until now given my love of expeditions. Thanks, lady ciel!
As the days pass I find myself more and more in the “renown is terrible” camp. The worst thing is that most of the problems are things I could see fixed if
Non-exclusive-item-related storylets that use renown were turned into stat checks instead of requirements.
Cards that granted favours also granted a couple cp of renown. Mitigating the frankly stupid decision to make the only way to increase renown require throwing several hard-to-get, highly valuable favours down the well.
I wonder why the Urchin 25 Renown item doesn’t have a point of BDR. All the others, so far, gave +1 BDR.
I do agree that it would be easier if gaining Renown was more organic. Grinding favours, which lead to undiscardable cards, and then having to use the faction item isn’t the most intuitive way to gain renown.
I believe, at this point, it’d be more benificial to create a pact to keep Connected: Constable and Hell at a relatively low level. The minority browsing this forum would just keep pulling the curve upward and lessening the value of Connected: Whatever by engaging in this arms race.
I think both hell and the constables are going to have a lot of people with high connections. Anyone who has bought the Soul Trade will have raised Hell if they took the spirifer side and Shepherds will have Constables, Church and Society.

Anyone who has bought the Soul Trade will have raised Hell if they took the spirifer side and Shepherds will have Constables, Church and Society.
Was about to say the very same thing, but was too slow typing :) I’m a Shepherd, and I’ve had both Church and Constables at a minimum of 200-something for years without even trying - as there just is no ‘profitable’ use for these (unless you want 666 Implacable detective’s bezness cards - right) these just tend to pile up even if one uses them up when the faction card comes around. Presumably there are people having Connected: Constables at 500-whatever out there, and not just a handful either…
Rather than giving a pm I thought id throw this out into the thread since a few are having troubles with this while I seem to be drowning in urchin favors (but cant get tomb colony favors for the life of me - I guess ill have to be scandalous and just go camp the options over there). For Urchin Favors (this tip was kindly given to me by someone on the irc - thanks!!) you ditch your rendezvous faction pet (Bandaged Raven, Minah, Bloodhound, etc) and hang out exclusively in Veilgarden to flip cards, you will get a gold Scuffle in the Streets card quite frequently.
(Hope mentioning this doesn’t get it nerfed, though it isn’t really too sneaky since you are giving up the Favor grinding you get from picking certain faction pets)
To answer another question from this thread - I naturally had my Constables at a decent level thanks to the Anti-Soul Trade, then dropped it thanks to drowning in conflict cards. I guess ive embarked inadvertently in the aforementioned arms race, since ive ground it up to the high 200s and was intending to take it further.
Hell though, for rp-reasons I intend to keep it at 0 Renown.

I’ve been wondering if the increasing conversion rates are because of advance warning. We only heard about the conversions for Tomb-Colonists and Rubbery Men a couple days in advance, and both those factions had a conversion ratio of 5. We heard about Urchins over two months in advance, and the conversion ratio was 7.
If the ratio is based on some metric of player Connected: Whichever, giving months of advance notice means a lot of time for players to grind and inflate the numbers. I really hope FBG has some countermeasure in place, or the Constables and Hell conversions will be even worse.
I can’t speak to how MANY Shepherds have high Connected values for Church or Constables, but my characters’ statistics bear out your point. My main character is a Shepherd. Her Connected: the Church is 1901. Her Connected: Constables is 1121.

Do we actually have details on exactly what measurement is used? I’ve seen plenty of references to Failbetter saying they use an average, but I’ve yet to see the actual quote.
Just taking the average value from all the players would also give some spectacularly bad results. A lot of players haven’t been active for years, a lot of accounts are low-level characters who stopped playing early in the game, some number of endgame players have ridiculously high Connections, others have gained huge quantities overall but spent it all as it came in…
I believe people are looking at this, and interpreting it as average.
“Don’t worry – we know some Connected qualities are easier to gain than others, and we’ll be setting the exchange rate in each case based on the actual distribution of Connected values among players.”
Hmm, did I lose the color when I copied it over?

I thought it worked with copying and pasting though, all well.
