I am looking forward to the promised content BUT I really hope it won’t be something that divides the story in two like Feducci’s marriage did. I still don’t know of he is the royal consort or not!
Betrayal of one Princess to another gives not only Confession but one Progress to the listener, too.
Which means the ‘all pets and weapons and three clues collected’ is still very Fate-heavy investment, but… just a bit less heavy. Sort of cash-back, as long as you do not allow any Progress to raise above three.
I did the full mystery, and got two companions (all from the same princess, so it still counted towards mystery progress). To get the weapon, I still need Fate. I would need even more if the companions I wanted belonged to a different Princess.
So yes, you don’t have to be a completionist to need Fate here.
Turns out I don’t need any upgrades, having best in slot from things like Laconic Prodigy and Newly-Born Frost-Moth… can I earn the Mayor’s Private Debating Lessons weapon before picking which companions to flavour-upgrade? If I can, how?
Is this weapon entirely separate from the ‘special option’ default ending I’ve been reading about here?
So I rummaged through the internet to find the images of some companions involved in this year’s upgrade. Only got 100x130 ones. Took me 5 minutes to alter the colors. Results are blurred but theoretically given higher resolution things should be cakewalk. Maybe our beloved FBG will be interested?

(Didn’t mean to take matters into hand. But given the opportunity, why not?)

You can go to the Halowmass storylet and talk to him. DON’T ask him what he is up to, this consumes his favor.
Start giving him favors. Once you give him 10, that will be enough for the weapon.
Just be careful: the mayor will take any confession you give him, but companions need specific confessions. So make sure you give him speifically the ones not needed for companion upgrade.
Thank you, Jolanda.
Sorry but this is mistake. You may spend exactly the same amount of confession using betrayal. Remember that betrayal gives one confession and one progress.
You begin with progress 0+0+0
After all clue you have 1+1+1
After two companions 3+1+1 or 2+2+1
In the first case you are ready. For the second case you must add 1 confession to get 2+3+1, then betray and get 3+0+1 and confession. First you use the confession then get it back.
<<Here was my mistake, sorry>>

Oh yeah, the ending doesn’t reset progress, does it? So then I can simply do the Widow choice, then betray her afterwards. I suppose I’ll do that, then.
Has anyone Betrayed any of the princesses to the Contrarian? Does that grant Favor?

I find it best to just sit with 3P and wait for any official words. If any, you can adjust your plan accordingly.
After all, Mr. Huffmans may require some material for his interviews!

Doing so only gives 2 Favours, it’s not worth it. Better to betray the ladies to each other and get a confession (6 Favours) for each betrayal.

Well, I would view this business with Arbor as the actual ending of the event, and whatever might still lie ahead with Huffam or what have you will be epilogue. In any case, I brought the Widow along with me to Arbor, but I’ll still have to betray her to get the Contrarian’s lessons.
This was a good Hallowmas for me. Got appointed as an ambassdor for a city of romantics and dreamers, my kind of people, got private tuition from the mayor which gave my persuasive skills an edge… a good hallowmas for me. I can only hope my new position will lead to some… fun and interesting interactions with the locals.

I still think this was a serious failure in design. It’s basically a trap for unwary players.

I, for one, fell for it. Beating myself up over it, because this means I’l miss his Weapon by just 2 favours.
Really annoyed.
Does anyone know if there’s going to be an opportunity to turn in unused confessions for regular items in the end?
I don’t have a problem with this. In some players’ Fallen London, he is; in others, he isn’t. Much like how the Cheery Man and the Last Constable broke their stalemate one way or the other, depending on the player’s choices, or might still be in their awkward detente if the player never intervened.
I can’t say for sure, but if there is not this would be the first time.
"Does she remember how she came to this place? No."
Oof. That drew some goosebumps.

It looks as if the story will divide FL residents into three groups (or split off three alternate Neaths), depending on who is ambassador for Arbour. It also looks as if Arbour will be a venue for the future and possibly for other stories.
I chose the Duchess, but one of our house mates has frittered the confessions on companions so will be finding out what happens if you roll up to the envoy empty-handed. Or has someone already done that? Would love to see an echo.
