If you guys need the ‘give only to the worthy’ option of A Blaze of Distant Light, you can find it on my journal. I’ve noticed that a lot of the people opted towards ‘immortality for everyone!’, which is a nice (if possibly impractical) thing to do. But my character’s not a philanthropist, and destroying the secrets of eternal life would mean sentencing his sister to death, so I had to pick that one.
If I could do this again, I think I’d go with the A Glimpse of the Void one… but alas. Still, this has all been wonderful content.
By the way, while we’re on the topic of echoing: Since the wiki’s use as a text-dump will soon be discontinued, perhaps we should take to echoing branch text as well? Just copy/paste the text and title into the fields, since they’re freely editable. Might clutter the journals, but it’s easier than taking pictures for me.
I can’t seem to find the text of A Conversation on the Road echoed or screenshotted anywhere, and I forgot to do either myself; does anyone know what the policy on posting text to the forum is? I figure it’s presumably all right to post text that isn’t Fate-locked as long as you put it in a spoiler box, but I want to be sure and I can’t seem to find a Forum Rules page or thread.
Does anyone know if Name Seekers will have to take the option for the visitor that leads to one of the Candles? Will it be possible (if not easy) to gain that candle later?
I wasn’t even aware that one of the options had a candle until now, and given I only drew the visitor card once late on the 30th, I never really had a chance to get the requirements for the SMEN option on the visitor card since you needed 3 fish.
I did get an option I really liked in the end, but it cost me Fate. And now I’m worried that I have to spend even more Fate to change to the Candle option because otherwise I might be blocked from the Name Seeking forever, after I have already put so much into it…
I’m not a Seeker myself, but as I understand it, you don’t have to have used the three-fish SMEN option to get the Candle, and there will be other ways to get the Candle later on anyway. They might be more difficult, but if you’ve found a Destiny you like, well, you may as well keep it, and take one of the other options to get the candle later on!

Well that’s reasonable, but all I’ve gotten from the Echo Bazaar twitter is the usual line of "No support or advice for Mr. Eaten’s Name content".
Which is kind of what I expected. all the same, having spent a small bit of money on Fate and backed Sunless Sea for quite a bit I’m quite invested in this game and I’m still a bit worried that I’ve locked myself out of this.
Still I think that they did say that the destinies might be available later but would be much harder to get. There may still be hope.
I really don’t think you have to worry. It wouldn’t be sensible to have progress a years-long story be restricted to those who happened to be playing during this one holiday event, and who got all the way through it, and who chose the right dream, and who chose this one destiny within that dream. This is very likely just early bonus access to a candle you’d otherwise get further down the road.

However, re: Mr Eaten - I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: most people who have embarked on the Mr Eaten quest will not be able to finish it. If this incident is causing you concern, you should absolutely duck out now because the more you go on, the more frustrated you’ll get.[/color][li]

Honestly this Candle was by far the easiest to obtain, especially considering you don’t even need any of the others to obtain it (the previous ones have to be acquired in sequence). The Mr Eaten option was broadcast pretty loudly, and the only difficulty really was giving up a positive Destiny item in favor of a negative one.
So yeah, like Alexis said, if you’re complaining about THIS part of SMEN…it’s probably best if you quit now.
Well, both 1 and 3 have time constraints too, 1 regarding when certain dreams are activated, 3 regarding how often certain tokens are sent out to players.

I would argue that it was not broadcast pretty loudly. The SMEN option on the visitor card didn’t appear for me since I’m missing PTTP: The Drownies. Not that I needed that option to get the candle, but I didn’t even know the candle was available.
But I’m not complaining at all that it wasn’t advertised. This is SMEN after all - content that Failbetter have always been refreshingly up front about in it’s nature. That is that SMEN will annoy you, frustrate you and cost you far more than it’s worth. And with the 2nd candle they made it quite clear to us that the cost of entry to each stage will likely increase and increase and leave more and more behind each time.
Anyway, the matter has been answered to my satisfaction, and so to get back on topic:
I got the Chill of the Void future and that was really, really interesting. I went for the fate locked option in the end and that was even more interesting.
Seems some of us have some bizarre destinies ahead of us.[/li][li] edited by NinjaComedian on 11/1/2013
