Hallowmas, 1891: The Visitors Are Here

Well, they are set 20 years in the future - that gives everyone enough time till then to play and have fun :)

Yeah, I think the idea is that these are long, long paths you start your character off on, not things you actually do. I mean, one of the Destinies mentions the in-game date as 1911 - I somehow doubt the game is going to last 20 more years before they end it.

Does the SMEN destiny require the Drownies quality, or could I just have the sighty-more-sane encounter with the Rubbery Man, and then take the SMEN destiny from there? What exactly are its unlocks?
All regular options give a destiny which gives +5 to one stat; the Nex ones give +5 to one and +3 to another.
The nex options are a bit more illuminating, but everything is really interesting regardless.
Stats-wise the Fate-locked destinies seem to provide an extra +3 in an additional stat different to the base +5 stat everyone’s destiny gives them.

I’d just go with whatever choice would best suit your character. I did do the Fate-locked option on Chill of the Void but that was because it was my main account and that was the choice that character would have made, no question.
Thanks for the tips! I chose a non-fate option, since it would fit my character more and I can invest the fate in something nicer. Off topic, but would Secrets Framed in Gold or the Aunt storyline be fairly good investments content-wise?

Just SMEN. I took the Blackest Brine on an alt who only had SMEN 1, and he had the option of choosing that one.

The only visible req is SMEN at 1. You don’t need the Drownies quality, I think…

Secrets Framed in Gold is mechanically interesting, and very well-written. You balance greater risks and greater rewards as you go along, and can choose to cash out at any point. The Fate-locked continuation of the Aunt story is a bit more conventional, but its final reward is a choice of one of three recurring cards, which provide different rewards. For instance, Sir Fred’s aunt ended up working for a newspaper, and so her card can be used to reduce Scandal and hear interesting rumours.

So I picked Yourself (the Fate-Locked Parabola content).

Wow, that’s amazing. You become (effectively) Morpheus. I echoed it to my Journal, but it’s totally worth it. Best side perk ever: you can freely teleport via mirrors! Oh, and you can manipulate and read all dreams, including the Bazaar!

Totally worth the loss of that niggling Humanity for immortality and control of time itself.

I don’t think I’ve ever come across an event that’s interested me more. On a rather similar note, I occasionally babysit a cat with two tails (and the stub of an extra leg) who belongs to a friend. As a kitten she enjoyed chasing her tails, and could never make up her mind which one she wanted to catch. This is the state of mind I’m in.
Perhaps this is a bit late in the day, but I am more or less at sea about exactly what happens with Hallowmas. The Visitors card has come up twice, the first time I bought a fish, and on the second I entertained the Adventuress. While I lurk here a lot, hoping to make a choice that’s right for the character I’m trying to build, I’m now thoroughly flummoxed about what I should do. Can someone perhaps answer some of my questions via mail?[li]

There is also the one that gives -3 to everything…
…and there are a few fools around who actually equip said item…;)

Oh, this is exciting indeed! Like with the fate-locked content last Christmas, I’m rather saddened by the fact that there’s premium content I’ll never be able to see, but there’s nothing to be done for that (except go hunting for peoples’ journal entries I guess). Still, quite fascinating! I wasn’t sure what was going to happen exactly, but the destiny I got (the distant blaze of light) was amazing and absolutely perfect for me. (I chose to share the gift with the world, of course.) Well done as usual, FBG. I look forward to seeing how this develops.

Although, something interesting: The date for the destinies is listed as 1911. That’s one year before World War I…could that be relevant, I wonder? Or perhaps Surface history is completely irrelevant and I’m barking up the wrong tree? Still something to think about, though.

I chose “give to those who have merit” but it just took me back to the decision page. I chose something else an it was permanent. I find this very unsettling

I don’t even know why I care about a bonus Destiny seeing as there’s no way im going to give my fancy candle up.

Although I do want to see what the actual result’s text is so… eh. Something involving Alight with Passion or a Memento of Passion is all I can think of, honestly, but I’m tired and addled so

Even if the bonus destiny was Rat? (+5 Rat, +3 Fanciness. Obtained via viewing a potential future of drowning the Bazaar under a curtain of billions of rats, all sent via ‘Give a Gift’ interface.)

Now I’m really disappointed that’s not what it is.

Well, you could still try the one Authority destiny where you become a Master. Mr. Rats!

Well, the Liberation of Night reveal was an eye opener, seeing as how I’m trying to start the Nadir quest and was contemplating selling the Nadir’s location to the Revolutionaries. Now I’m starting to second-guess that decision.

Has anyone done the Committed version of that destiny yet? I figured saving everyone would be more in character, but I’d like to see what the alternative would have been.

You only need 1 fish if you want to do the SMEN option, the 3-fish option is not required.

I loved the writing of the Blaze of Distant Light option so much; it was remarkably evocative. I’m a low-level user (highest attribute is Persuasive 76 + bonuses), so I wasn’t at all familiar with the context of the decision I was making. It was satisfying nonetheless; I took the option that seemed ethical to me, and now December is my friend, everybody else is cross at me, and I have Gloom. Couldn’t be more chuffed, even if I have doomed us all.[li]

Unfortunately, I already made the decision to do so. My character was hoping the device would…well, I suppose I had hoped the results would be less…horrible. Or at least, that there would be some hope of the public rallying behind him. Not so, it seems. Moriarty has some thinking to do. But I did the Committed version. Its lighter, but still a little gloomy. The question is, would it be more in character to keep the destiny, or no…
