The Kickstarter for Fallen London: The Roleplaying Game starts… now! Incredibly, you are now able to back the tabletop roleplaying game set in Fallen London that we’ve been on about for the last few months (incredibly because people have been on at us to do this for fifteen years, so it’s a pretty weird day to say the least). Even if you aren’t planning on backing, there’s a celebratory gift to commemorate the Kickstarter for your Fallen London character if you log in and look for a story called ‘An Insistent Magpie’ in London.
If you are excited to back the campaign, I advise you to crack on and do so within the first 48 hours to receive a Devilbone Die for free. What will it be made of, you ask? Well, what are devil bones typically made of? That kind of stuff. Next:
We made a fun video Actual Play video to show off the game, starring some of tabletop’s finest, plus some familiar faces from Fallen London’s past. Your cast:
DMing the actual play is Magpie Games’ own Brendan Conway, lead designer of Fallen London: The Roleplaying Game
Dimension 20 alumna Becca Scott features as Dierdre, the tomb colonist duellist
Fellow Dimension 20 and Dropout star Ify Nwadiwe is playing Pryce, the ‘traditional human’ mercenary
Writer of Exceptional Stories Fine Dining and A Little Pandemonium and star of actual play podcast Friends at the Table Jack de Quidt plays Kingsley, the Rattus Faber doctor
Nerdcore legend and creator of Neath! A Fallen London Musical The Stupendium returns to London to reprise their original character from the musical, Cassie, the curiously ageless barmaid
I hope you enjoy the Actual Play, and that you’ll consider backing the campaign!
I was expecting few hours and I was dumbstruck when I saw it was already funded!
Great work FBG & Magpie Games!
EDIT: Well, considering the progress, I will change my attitude towards requesting/asking for things. I know the speed of this will tone down a little, but this is already a great KS campaign. Are there any chances that the browser game additions will be included in future stretch goals?
I just want to say I love my new bird. He is my spirit animal. We are best friends. How have I survived in the Neath without a companion who is as much of a thief and hoarder as I am.
I wonder what other NPCs will be added. If we’re going through the mayors, the Viscountess, the Contrarian, and Feducci could be next. I could also see a member of the Calendar Council like January showing up. Maybe the Bishop?
You never know for sure, but we did have an inkling that this one would be quite a high earner (when you consider that the average pledges for TTRPG Kickstarters are usually much higher than video game ones, because of the immovable costs of physical objects). It’s a bit wild to have raised this much so quickly though! There are currently more people backing for the Master tier than the strictly digital one, which you have to assume will trade places eventually. Right? Right??
I looked at the various tiers last night, when it was around the 250 grand mark, and was surprised to see them very close in numbers. Usually (I back books as well as (mainly video) games) the digital tier way outstrips all the others. It’s fascinating. I wonder where this will top out.
The new character options tier includes the Hinterlands; I suppose this is probably a pre-Railway version, with no Tracklayers’ City, but there’s certainly plenty to play with in the locations along the way. Evenlode, Ealing Gardens, Jericho, Balmoral… and playing someone from the Khanate could also be very interesting.
While I am very happy about my new bird companion, it could not have come at a worse time as I just recently obtained The ministry of enigmas. If I knew I was gonna get a slightly better shadowy companion for a lot less grinding, I would’ve went for the ministry of war instead! Looks like we’ve already raised a lot for the kickstarter, might support it myself :)
The accepted wisdom for a Kickstarter is to spend a lot of time developing stretch goals in advance so you have a big list of things that are attractive and viable, and then to not reveal a big list of them all at once because it’s more exciting to do it little by little (plus then you might see which way the wind is blowing and try to change the order or target a bit, so things end neatly). Doing a Kickstarter really is a merry show! Hahahah
