Fallen London is 10: Birthday Gifts

just reminding everyone to check twitter (or discord) for todays gift (thanks fbg we appreciate it, even if it does happen to be on discord) :)

I’ve no idea–I can’t even remember when I started playing! I definitely did not start at the very beginning–I wasn’t around to get an Amber Carnival Token, for example. But I was around close to the beginning, I think.
You must’ve been very close to the beginning indeed, Cathy! Your first echo is from 22 Dec 2009 - and I’ve never found one from before 30 Nov 2009.
If this is the case, when was that Amber Carnival Token released?
Probably at the very very beginning. This guy has one and was around a little earlier than Cathy.

According to this post, the Amber Carnival Token was a way to visit Mrs Plenty’s Carnival before that location became officially available:

&quotThe Carnival will be opening around the end of March. But if you’re lucky enough to have an Amber Carnival Token, you can get an early pass…&quot

I assume &quotMarch&quot means March 2010 (1888). But I don’t know how the tokens were distributed in the first place. Maybe by access code? Or did you really have to buy them for 100 Fate, as indicated?

:edit: According to the old wiki, it really was a 100 Fate item!

First presents, now cake! What could be finer? (Though it seems not to say “EAT ME.”)

This is today’s (Thursday):

How long will these access codes be available?
The 2 BDR item is impossible to resist so I will make an alt. But s/he/it needs a backstory first!

I really wish I’d known beforehand we’d be swamped with unique items over this Advent/Birthday period. I definitely would’ve made another account!

As it stands, all of these are nice collector’s items, but only the Lamppost is really useful for me - so far. :)

I personally very fond of this dreaded cake

Happy birthday Fallen London! Been less active recently, but still enjoying it :slightly_smiling_face:

Not “Oh, whey!”?

I don’t know what compelled me to click that ad on Reddit all those years ago but I don’t regret it.

I joined approximately right after SMEN was disabled so I guess that makes me a semi-veteran?

I started sometime around when the Carnival was first opened, I think? I remember at the time it was a big deal when the level cap was raised to like 80, and the Forgotten Quarter was first opened… my first echo is from March 1 1889 (Fallen London), but the first reference in my old emails that I can find to Fallen London is in May 2010. When I registered on the fallen london forums. …not THESE forums. These didn’t exist yet. A fansite, that was long since deleted.

Those were the days.

Well, I suppose &quotoy vey&quot might be an option!

The codes will stay up for a good bit, fret not. Here’s the last one: thank you.

Also, there are 298 million rats on a string in Fallen London. :)
The codes will stay up for a good bit, fret not. Here’s the last one: thank you.
Huuuu, you have no idea what a relief is that for me! Too busy, too many issue and not the best time to start a new journey.

Big happy birthday to FBG! :D

So there are 4 codes in total? A +2BDR among them?
(Of course they don’t work on Mozilla for me. I know there are no foxes in Fallen London, save the one, but this vendetta is getting ridiculous).

It tickles me to no end that the cake (and the scone, from the recent Advent) are classed as weapons. Aside from being perfect thematically (for the setting, time, etc) it puts me in mind of the dwarven battle bread from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, which is never a bad thing.

Yes, and the +2 BDR (it’s Respectable, by the way) is handy because none of the other Home Comfort items I’m aware of give more than +1 BDR.

Wow, phyrne–thank you! I do so little of Twitter anymore (mostly to pick up gift codes from FBG) so i don’t know what tools they might have to track down that kind of info. But you’ve reassured me as to the state of my memory–I thought I’d been playing since sometime in 2009, but everyone seems to be counting the anniversary from 2010 so I wasn’t sure.

To attempt to answer Skinnyman’s question (also a good one!) I think the Amber Carnival Token was part of FL’s alpha. By the time I started, they were …very early in the beta.
But you’ve reassured me as to the state of my memory–I thought I’d been playing since sometime in 2009, but everyone seems to be counting the anniversary from 2010 so I wasn’t sure.
The 2009/2010 thing confused me initially, too, until I realized that we’re celebrating Failbetter’s anniversary, of course, not Fallen London’s.

Fallen London - the game - was put online in late 2009, but Failbetter Games - the company - went public on 11 Jan 2010.

I think there are 5 codes in total: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
