That happened to me too. I lost 80+ points of connected hell. It took forever to get back.
I linked up my Seeker account to my shiny new Sunless Seas captains, because the Seeker was the one who had a sweet cat to pass on before going North. And a Christmas longbox going spare, since what else was there to spend echoes on? And a puzzle-box just because.
The Seeker did not, however, feel particularly qualified to provide Sage Advice to anyone, even a fool-hearty Zee captain.
And I’m now kicking myself for good roleplaying. :)
My present long-term goal is to do the top shepherd option from a trade in souls to restore enough souls to mirror the population of London around present Fallen London time, which is around six million (meaning I’d have to play the option six thousand times.) So far, I’ve forgotten to record the option three times, essentially wasting three thousand souls and three hundred infernal contracts. This is made all the more troubling by the fact my renown is not high enough to unfinished business for souls, anymore. Tough times for a dedicated shepherd.
I tried to fail the casing challenge in order to get to New Newgate, but so far I failed to fail four times in a row.
EDIT: now five times

Well now, you should make this failure into a celebration! :D
Missed the yacht a fifth time! Hoorah!
(I want to die inside.)
Sixth time.
Ouch…
Straight from TvTropes: "According to some players on the Failbetter forums, it is better to work some extra real-life hours and use the wage to buy the 20 Fate and skip the gambling altogether, instead of spending time in the game to grind for Bribes."
Still, perhaps the RNG will bless you in some other gamble. Someday. Hopefully, soon.

Alas! That simply isn’t possible for me yet, because I’m still a student.
I’ll just keep trying…

Seventh time!
Are you absolutely sure that is the right vessel for you? On special offer today, we have this neat little steamer, one careful owner. It will get you there, I promise!
Tramp? Who said anything about tramp?
(Commiserations, by the way…)

That yacht will be mine!
Remember how I said seven failures?
Yeah, make that eight.
Ninth failure! Perhaps ten times’ the charm?
Aaargh!!! The one time I’m in with a faction enough to get the 40 Renown item. The one time it doesn’t feel so impossibly out of reach that I can’t even be bothered trying for it.
The one bloody time… And it’s a flippin’ Watchful +10 item for the weapon slot. The weapon slot! I already got something better for that from my job. AAAAARGHHH! Oh Fallen London, why you hate me so much?
I’m going to crawl off into the corner and cry.
I had a Mood card stored for a whole year while I was zailing, but upon my return I forgot what I had planned to do with it (Correspondence training) and wasted it on something trivial. I then gave up on that plan and blackened my mind like paper. I drew another Mood card almost immediately afterward, but was happy to save it until my Watchfulness was back up to 200… until today when a misclick discarded it.
I have been slowly building up notability for when I need it for SMEN. Just threw the amanuensis out by accident. Lost two points of Notability after only just getting my 8th point.
Right back at it, I guess…
Sympathy! I did the exact same thing…except I already had 12 Notability when I did it. Now I’m at 11, and am having the worst time trying to get that one point back. Grrrr.
"Oh, Winking Isle isn’t too bad. I don’t know why people complain as they do. It’s a fun and quirky mechanic; I’ll probably be done in a few days and have made substantial progress. This’ll be easy."
Haha! Hahaha! Hahahaha! Haha . . . ha . . . haaaa
insert uncontrollable sobbing
Winking Isle changes you (the player, not just the character). You’re never the same after going through it.
I’ve now taken 5 characters through that experience…
It’s nowhere near as disheartening as most of the other things in this thread, but today I failed a 99% persuasive check.
It’s been a long time since I’ve failed anything, now that I’m 200 for each stat with good equipment. It reminded me of the days back when everything was a gamble, and nothing was guaranteed…
also it reminded me that the RNG is a b-----d
So, I don’t even know HOW I failed, but Derek has 9 Unaccountably Peckish (and he never ever did anything towards seeking), black bordered cards are everywhere in his deck and an unwise misclick gave him a bunch of menaces and a slight hit in connections and Persuasive. Now I suppose I need to give him SMEN 2 so he can get the Bad Ending storylet, I suppose.
But man, trust Derek to screw things up when I’m not looking. That’s how he ended in a bat’s body in the first place, you know?
Unaccountably peckish comes from other places besides seeking, and if you’ve got at least one it increases by one once a week. You don’t have to seek to get rid of it. (In fact I don’t think going through a bad end will remove it). Best way is to seek refreshment St the labyrinth of tigers.
