Commiseration: Our most painful failures

I just took a look at a Pail of So-Called Snow through my Semiotic Monocle, only to find that it has no effect if your ToL is over 5. Would have been nice to know that before, so that I could have used it after securing a 5-card lodgings and come back for a Remote Lodings.

4 buckets of lacre and still no dark-carapaced crustacean. I haven’t been this P.O.ed at the game since my stupid plant lost like, 20 contests in a row :P

Seriously, if I miss out on all the ToL goodies AND home furnishings and end up with nothing to show for it, I’m putting my fist through my screen. And possibly doing something unspeakable to my monkey beforehand :P
Snow, he said possibly BEFORE-hand, the event with the monkey is over!
(Grumbling and pouting is heard as she sulkily storms off.)
I’m a she :P

LMAO! Your replies crack me up XD

When I got stuck with the Revolutionary Firebrand as a companion after deciding I hated him, I consoled myself by naming him Fido and deciding my character makes him live in the basement and eat dog food. Perhaps you could pretend you have a similar situation with Mr. Jewel Thief until you are able to give him the boot? It’s small consolation, but it’s something :P
Ahh! Oh my god you are all killing me. :)

Is that the card in the Cave of the Nadir that allows you to get a Complaisant Frost-Moth (or exchange PtPT: Lacre for Tears of the Bazaar)? Ah, I know well the pains of trying to draw a useful card in that irrigo-drenched hell. I was lucky enough to get three visits to it this week (my first was just before Time, The Healer, then after my second Mr Sacks came to take my irrigo again) but I’ve still been able to get little use out of the place.

Out of those visits I’ve only been able to get Irrigo Goggles, Forgotten Spidersilk Slippers, a Frost-Moth and a Searing Enigma. Oh, and a Bottle of M____s’ B___d for betraying their confidence and giving the Cave’s location to the Calendar Council.

Yes. I’ve been trying to get as many vials of ToTB as possible, and my plans only allow for one more failure before i’ve wasted resources getting pails i won’t need. (If everything goes to plan i’ll have at least 4 vials of tears of the bazaar, probably 5, from this.) Oh well…

Now 5 buckets of lacre and counting…and I bought the 5th bucket from the urchins and it cost me SO much money…

is torn between crying and punching herself

I need a hug…or maybe some wine :P

EDIT: Bucket #6 finally did the trick. Now I AM crying…with joy (and my character is doing naked cartwheels in the town square) :P

What do you think I should name it? &quotFrustration?&quot :P

I made an account JUST to post in this thread, because I feel like crying right now and sorely need back-pats.

I wanted to create a short story that would shake the Bazaar to its core, making its spires’ inhabitants grasp at their cups. That would make the Masters gasp and rustle, discomfited, under those cloaks. One that would knock every weirdly-shaped sock off its owner’s appendages. A classic. A truly worthy mantelpiece treasure.

I spent all my notes and resources on raising its Potential, pouring money and time into it. Eight weeks of waiting to gather two Trade Secrets. This would all cost me much more than I could possibly make off the story, Echo-wise, but that didn’t matter. I was creating Art.

Today, finally, with Time the Healer, I could get the second Trade Secret to push the Potential above 200, and consider if I would wait another four weeks and raise it even higher to lessen the possibility of failure. As I was weighing the matter, I went to look at what my odds are.

My Name Signed with a Flourish is 2. The only options of publishing is the Making your Name one, with a meager 40 Potential requirement and a set result, and writing a story for Mr Pages, requiring 50 Potential and similarly having a set result.

All this time, all this everything, and I can’t publish. Truly, I am an unrecognized genius. I would say that only after my death my short story will be given the recognition it deserves, but we can’t even count on that in the Neath, can we?

I’m seriously considering just never moving on, never publishing anything else, and keeping the 209 Potential. A mantelpiece souvenir of failure through a dumb oversight.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, FBG really needs to clarify that point. A Classic Short Story is only good for bragging rights, but I’ve seen a few here and there. I plan on doing one myself, after I pick up a few more Trade Secrets. I would be… unhappy to put up all the time and resources and fail the Potential check.

Oh God, Roqi, you win the Heartbreak Award. I wish I could give you a hug.

I nearly always end up burning my short stories, so I am impressed at how far you got. It just…sucks so much that you can’t do anything with it.

Thank you guys. It is tragic. I wish it was more clearly indicated, and in fact, I think I’m gonna mail support about that. I don’t want anybody else to do what I did.

I even thought about using the access code which allows you to choose what stage of Persuasive you’re at, and set my Name to 3, but… just last week, I was on an old-access-code-claiming spree, and I had clicked that one as well. I backed out, but the code was used up anyway.

Classic short story of disappointment and heartbreak, indeed.

Normally I’d say that’s how it is, but ion this very esoteric setup, I’d contact support and plead your case. You should have either as an optional selection, not a Hobson’s choice there!
You reckon? The FAQ was pretty clear on the team not undoing misclicks or misunderstandings. I wouldn’t wanna, y’know, come off as expecting special treatment or something. I just mailed feedback in the hopes that it’d be made clearer in the future. And I know that this is my fault, really, for not paying enough attention. Still, hours later, I’m still sad, to the point that I would actually spend Fate to undo this…

This is neither a misclick nor misunderstanding. it is two different tasks that shouldn’t intersect with each other, yet lock out all other options when it should not happen. The &quotperfect storm&quot if you will. I’d definitely email them, as you have nothing else to lose and everything else to gain explaining this.
[li]
I suppose, though I still could have actually looked at what the requirements for publishing a short story were a bit earlier. Would you mind clarifying what exactly do you mean by ‘two different tasks that shouldn’t intersect’ etc?

I think your issue might be because people were getting confused about what to do to Make your Name on the Persuasive Tracker; they would publish higher level stories and wonder why that wasn’t helping them advance. Perhaps the solution FBG came to was to lock out all the other options while you’re still on that part of the tracker so people don’t get quite as confused - which is very unfortunate in your case, but is an improvement to the game in general.

There’s certainly no harm in sending in a report, however. Feedback is nice.

…Are you saying it’s possible that this was changed while I was in the middle of it? Like, I didn’t actually miss the fact that I needed to further Making my Name before creating another story? I assumed that I overlooked the fact that the options were locked… Ouch.
That is an improvement to the game, but… Ouch.

I did send a feedback note.

Quite possible - the last time I saw someone wonder why they didn’t advance in the tracker after publishing a short story was only 12 days ago.

Edit: Just went back and read your original post, and realized that this was a process that took 8 weeks, so…yes, ouch. That’s incredibly unfortunate.

Ouch. It took longer than eight weeks, the eight weeks was just the gathering of Professional Perks for Trade Secrets… never mind the Favours in High Places and… Case Notes and… Auuugh.

You’re very right, actually. Now I remember that I’d published a Short Story before, some lesser kind.

Do you think I have a case for calling for support, here, being screwed over not by myself but a gameplay change…?

Edit: Okay, so I sent a support ticket. A flicker of hope. Fingers crossed.
Gosh, this community is so helpful.

I think it’s worth a shot, yeah. The feedback email may suffice, but support is more directly a request for personal assistance rather than a gameplay suggestion.

Edit: I’ll cross my fingers for you as well. :)

I received a response for my ticket, and they’re going to implement a change tomorrow. Huzzah for Failbetter! Do you know any other dev team that responds so quickly and helpfully? Hell naw. :hahabow:

(I figured this warranted one of those retro smileys. I’m so sorry)

Kukapetal: I see your 5 buckets and raise you - I only got my crustacean on the 11th try. AND my TOL was too high to benefit. Sobs and recriminations all round.
