Commiseration: Our most painful failures

Accidentally selling a Singular Plant by misclicking an icon shortly after starting Fallen London up again. Double digit value on my quality, and I got some paltry sum for it.

the 50/50 odds of gambling with your scrap should be quite good in the long run, as you gain more when you win, but lose less when you do lose. when gambling for 10 pieces of scrap, you only lose 8 scraps when you fail. should only avoid gambling for scraps IF you had a long winning streak or you have less than a 100 or so scraps.[/quote]
IF you had a long winning streak, that doesn’t change anything- assuming FL is truly random, that’s just the gambler’s falacy speaking.

I only just found Fallen London two days ago and I’ve been really enjoying it. After two visits from Mr Sacks I drew his card a third time. Before clicking on it I clicked open the Bazaar tab determined that I was going to be able to offer him something this time as I vaguely remembered he liked wine. I sold a diamond I had acquired to purchase a bottle of every wine I could just in case (as obviously consulting with the wiki to see which vintage he/it preferred would have been entirely too sensible for me) and then went back and clicked on the card… not only did I not have the correct wine but this time he was asking for diamonds…

I think I’m going to remember this mistake for some time.

@Nibelethe: Don’t feel too bad. He would have just taken your diamond and given you nothing.
Check out the Young Turks thread for new players, there is a lot of good stuff in there, and you can make some valuable contacts for social actions.

Accidentally quit my job. yay. and i went to notability 0 at the same time, so… yeah.

It’s a sign that you should become a doctor or notary for the season. The RNG is just looking out for you ;-)

I’m torn this year between keeping my Notary Profession and taking the Primaeval Hint or dropping the profession for Mr Sacks and taking the +1 Connected: Masters before getting my Profession back.
I’ve got an Unsigned Message locked and loaded. Decisions, decisions.

My most painful failures were this week when after I had bought 3 pails on ‘snow’ from Urchins through grinding shrieks and excavating in the Forgotten Quarter… I gave one to Mr. Sacks on the first card hoping for an +1…when all I saw was &quotyour taste of lacre is above 5…&quot I cried. Because earlier this week, I wasted a pail trying to use the Monocle a third time in a row! DOH! What a loss of echoes and hard work…ugh. Back to grinding…

Not necessarily a failure, but I made the rash decision to pursue the jewel thief. Now we are married and I’ve wasted so many echoes on him. I want a divorce, but there are no better (affordable) choices yet, and I like how he makes my rows (in my journal) all nice and even. Hate him though.

First Underworld Problems, I think you mean.

When I got stuck with the Revolutionary Firebrand as a companion after deciding I hated him, I consoled myself by naming him Fido and deciding my character makes him live in the basement and eat dog food. Perhaps you could pretend you have a similar situation with Mr. Jewel Thief until you are able to give him the boot? It’s small consolation, but it’s something :P

Just use him for his connections :)

:D Of course I’ll get what I can out of him before I leave him to the streets.

I spent seven Sudden Insights and failed to get any Searing Enigmas out of my Rat of Glory, only to later realize I could have gotten a Companion worth 500 Echoes guaranteed instead.

Getting Mr Sacks as a storylet after failing to draw its card is such a great idea, I say.

I failed to draw the catafalrique again! I know, i’ve only got a 60% chance of drawing it, but it’s stil annoying. The season of tears is short, and I wasted another day, now!

Is that the card in the Cave of the Nadir that allows you to get a Complaisant Frost-Moth (or exchange PtPT: Lacre for Tears of the Bazaar)? Ah, I know well the pains of trying to draw a useful card in that irrigo-drenched hell. I was lucky enough to get three visits to it this week (my first was just before Time, The Healer, then after my second Mr Sacks came to take my irrigo again) but I’ve still been able to get little use out of the place.

Out of those visits I’ve only been able to get Irrigo Goggles, Forgotten Spidersilk Slippers, a Frost-Moth and a Searing Enigma. Oh, and a Bottle of M____s’ B___d for betraying their confidence and giving the Cave’s location to the Calendar Council.

On the last day for Flint - now valued at a whopping 120 FATE - I signed up for Exceptional membership, chose how to greet the bishop, showed up at the House of Chimes, and then (inexplicably) failed to secure access to the story for later. (What do you mean I had to click through that Storylet before the 31st…?)

:(

To be clear, I would have been able to play Flint at the time that I had one of my characters become an Exceptional Friend. It was the next day when I noticed, oops, I’d missed out.

LMAO! Having never married the Artist’s Model myself, I simply must know what led to those sentiments XD
