Commiseration: Our most painful failures

Argh. Either Time came early or I didn’t quite keep track - but I think the former, by one day - and I just went down from 15 to 14 Notability. That’s a really, really painful point to get back now :(.[li]

had the slowcakes card to get my first notability point but not enogh makeing waves so was holding onto it. ended up clicking an option that cleared my deck without noticeing the warning text… its been 3 weeks now and have yet to get the card again… its… very frustrating and getting me sad to click cards… i heard single points of notability could be gifted? would that be to much to ask of anyone?

I spent a small fortune in real money trying to increase Notability to 16. The amanuensis card in my Lodgings indicated MW of 54 (or something thereabouts) was needed. Got there! Then found that, on clicking the wretched card, Notability had to be 15 or less. Several hours and more real money spent attempting to convert the excess MW into Nights on the Town. Embarrassed to say I spent probably £100 chasing geese of the wild variety. Happy to support this superb game which has kept me engaged for years now, but, gnnnnh nevertheless. If I am wrong, and it is possible to increase Notability, please do not tell me…

Nope - 15 is cap right now (otherwise I’d have been hosting the Princess more often!).

arrrr… crap. i thought i’ve gotten good at zailing, but got my troubled waters up to 11 when i was just 1 change point away from journey’s end 9!!! guess i’ll have to wait for the card to reset my journey again.

after repeatedly losing several useful cards to empty my hand of those D–ned eyeless skull cards, i finally noticed they can only appear if your stats are above 50, and my base stats on the relevant character are in the low 70s range, so i could’ve easily forced them to discard by putting on the talkative rattus faber >.<

Which is much more convenient than say, dying. D:

Only a minor frustration, but I wish to express it.

For the last few days, Dream cards everywhere. As soon as I realise I actually want a few more points of Nightmares - nope, no Dreams at all.

Seeking Curios in the Forgotten Quarter is just marvelous at giving Nightmares.

I play chess with death when i want nightmares, but that requires you having already played chess with him a lot to do.

@Lady Taimi: Yes, but also at giving Eyeless Skulls.

Although, you can sell those now, can’t you?

Yeah you can, both to the bazaar or the Radical Factotum, but i assume you’re trying to avoid helping him?

not a big failure but i just realised i could buy Abominable Salts directly. wasted a few actions and a net loss of 9 echos(compared to buying directly) to buy enough candles to mass convert them to salts.

are all mass conversions this uneconomical? or are they just made that way for more often-used resources like candles and secrets?
are all mass conversions this uneconomical?
It’s not the mass conversion that’s eating your Echoes, it’s your buying Foxfire Candle Stubs at the Bazaar for 3 pence each. I did something like that when I had just arrived to London. &quotOhh, even odds for triple the money when betting on the Turkish Girl? Let me just buy some Deep Amber to get this started!&quot And then I lost that Deep Amber. The second time too. Eventually I figured out that I was supposed to have gotten the Deep Amber by giving away Warm Amber to Rubbery Men, not buy it at the Bazaar. To think that I even bought Rostygold to spend at Church fêtes and buy drinks at the Rusty Tramp… Oh, those were the days… I don’t miss. At all.

Consider this: An admirer among the clergy gives 1-193 x Foxfire Candle Stub, which is about 1 Echo/Action, which isn’t a very profitable money-grind. But if you’re looking for that specific resource and your only other option is to buy it at the Bazaar at triple the selling price, then getting it through that unfinished business in Veilgarden saves you 3 Echoes/Action as long as you still need that particular resource. And while Abominable Salts only cost twice as much to buy as their selling price, that’d still be a 2 Echoes/Action grind if you mass convert those Foxfire Candle Stubs from Veilgarden, and that’s really good too.

nope. actions are ALWAYS far more &quotexpensive&quot than echos.and i happen to have lots of echos already. it cost me zero actions to buy them from the bazaar.the more i buy , the more IRL time and action i &quotsave&quot. there’s pretty much no limit to such &quotsavings&quot in tme/actions. unless you always buy fate/nex to refresh your actions, than you’re far richer than i am IRL if not in-game. of course you can also say the only way to absolutely save on time is to not play at all!

but seriously if i spent all my IRL time and actions on min-maxing echos/action , i 'll spend ALL my time on hunter’s keep or some progress flipping. that’s not exactly fun. not to me. though some WoW or maybe Diablo HARDCORE gamers would disagree with me.

Actually since you basically can get 1-2 echoes per action, you can pretty easily calculate an exchange rate.

Unless you’re using extremely profitable routes to provide all your money (ie on the 2 echoes/action level) it’s going to be cheaper to use Unfinished Business for large quantities.

Of course, seeing as you build up wealth over time you generally will have a large surplus of actions banked as echoes that you can spend, so it does work out, but that prevents you from spending the wealth on gear or other such things.

ack. 3 failed very modest watchful challenges , and a battle with doc orthos made me lose about 19 supplies? i might have to zail out to hunter’s keep again to resupply on secrets , and reduce my nightmares since i still have an addiction to laudanum.

For the first time ever, I drew &quotA Little Omen&quot this week. I had grand plans to use it to steal bazaar permits (taking advantage of the hour-long +30 stat-of-your-choice boost it gives). But I kept it in my hand two days waiting for a time when I had an hour to devote to pilfering permits. I am now kicking myself because - when I finally sat down to do it - I decided to first pop into the Cave of the Nadir for some echoes to help buy gear with a further shadowy boost.

This, of course, cleared my hand of all my cards. I had even stopped myself from visiting the Cave twice in those two days. It hurt.

I just lost a Savage battle in Knife & Candles even though I had 40 points over my opponent.
I just lost a Savage battle in Knife & Candles even though I had 40 points over my opponent.
Chance to win = Attack / (2 x Defence)
Savage 140 vs 100: 70% chance of winning, 30% risk of losing
Savage 100 vs 60: 83.33% chance of winning, 16.67% risk of losing

(Just mentioning this in case you thought 40 points matter more than they do.)

I got myself banished from the empress’ court, assuming there was a way to redeem myself and be allowed back inside…It turns out, once you’re banished, you can’t get back in. The royal artist in residence was the most lucrative and fun part-time job I had in this game.
