CHRISTMAS IN THE NEATH: A GUIDE

Failbetter has tricked me! My taste of lacre is now 6 d___ you tricksters who did that!

ha! should have checked the calendar first! so now i’m up to 7. Having posted about my ToL 6 issue, i naturally found the answer to it in this string almost immediatly (must have skipped over it the first 4 times). I think at this point i’ll hang on to my buckets till the wicket opens. From what i understand, at this point i can expect another few ToL from Sacks, which will allow me to purchase my 5 card lodgings at the Baazar and the I should be able to get back up using the buckets so that i can get the 5 card room at the Beth. That sound right?

Exactly
Hmm. I have all the 5-card lodgings, and don’t wish to return to the Nadir really (because I boosted stats over 200); is there anything useful for me to do with this ‘snow’? :)
Make a Noman. If you build up &quotNoman Knows&quot enough you can trade it all in for an Elemental Secret before it melts.

Again, does anyone know when the urchins stop appearing? I need another dozen pails to get my desired levels of ToL.
Another dozen???
How many ToL do you need? Doesn’t it cap at 15 with Surmise? Or do you intend to buy the whole real estate in the Neath?
It caps at 15. I desire to reach ToL 7 enough times to buy a vial in the nadir each sunday, and a 5-card lodging besides, as well as finish with 7 ToL. OFC, I might turn out to not get to use all that, but it’s worth trying to get as many as possible. i might need 9.5 instead of 12, but it remains to be seen when the lacre will melt- if i’ll have enough time to finish the nadir and get to 7 again. I also might need less because, despite my best efforts, i fail to draw the catafalrique some weeks. but i want to prepare for the best case scenario.

The surmise option caps at 15, but the Mr. Sacks options don’t, I believe? I assume that’s how people got up to 24. I suppose you could get as high as 29 but maybe the quality description doesn’t change?

Yes, but he was specifically asking &quotWhy do you need 12 more pails of lacre, in addition to the free ones?&quot not, what is the cap of ToL. And 15 pails would be more than i’d need, if i wouldn’t be burning through them as fast as i got them.

And the question is still worth asking- does anyone know when urchin’s pails vanished last christmas? was it the 25th, the 31st, the last days of janurary?

If you mean, when did the pails melt, that was on February 1st last year. Time the healer melted the pails.

If you mean when did the urchins stop selling pails? I don’t remember.

When did the urchins stop selling pails, though the other information is useful. So it melts on the next TTH after feb 1st? That should mean i don’t need to change my plans. 12 more buckets of lacre to find. yay.

Allow me to ask on behalf of those who are not POSI: what is the best use of the small amount of ToL we can achieve besides spending 3 of it on a Remote Lodging? There will probably be some left over, and obviously we are not going to be purchasing 5-card lodgings or a Noman.

Most of the non-lodging Lacre items are for bragging rights/flavor rather than for material benefit. I would recommend saving your Lacre for next year (where you will definitely want to get at least one 5-card lodging.) You can also benefit now by selling your pails for echoes at the end of January.

You can sell pails for 50 echoes at De Gustibus (right before they melt). You can also sell the pail+silent soul (from advent calendar) for 70 echoes which is 7.5 echoes more than the silent soul is normally worth. As of now, the silent soul’s only use is selling in this manner, so for an early game character the 20 echoes is likely more valuable than having a collector’s item (that can be regained via fate-locked expedition.)

It’s worth noting that a Noman costs the same amount of ToL as remote lodgings, at least at the start of the season. It’s a cool story, so you might as well get one and feed it – you don’t have to preserve a Noman’s life beyond winter if what you want out of it is a very valuable and rare Elemental Secret, for instance!

hi im a new player and somone told me in this event I can get the Soothe & Cooper Long-Box althrough I read the guide here I still not entierly understand it

what do I have to do to get the longbox exactly?

Important! Quickly click this advent calendar link as it is going to expire very soon: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/a/38664adreamofasunderedsea
It gives you one point of ToL and you are going to need it. I’ll start editing in the rest of my response after I post this, but since its so close to expiration I thought I’d post it up quickly to give you a chance to use it as soon as possible.

Overview
1. Shovel the snow from your lodgings every week using Snowbound and you'll get at least 3 pails of snow (4 if you already have one). Use the pails of snow to get ToL. (A +3 or +4 ToL total if you are a new player).
2. Days 8, 9, and 12 of the Seasonal &quot12 Days of Mr Sacks&quot content will give you a total of +2 ToL and +2 pails if you select the right options. These require no special preparation. (A +4 ToL total if you are a new player)
3. Items 1 and 2 above should give you enough ToL on their own to get you to 6 points of ToL, a seasonal currency.
~
4. Long-Boxes are purchased using ToL in an area called Penestocks Wicket. This area only opens up once you complete the 12 days of Mr Sacks Storyline. It closes at the end of January.
5. Pails melt at the end of January too so be sure to use them before then.
6. Additional ToL can be obtained from giving mr sacks a bottle of greyfields first sporing, a celestial poem, or by spending premium currency on optional fate locked storylines.
7. If you want even more pails of snow, you can sell your soul to the devils for the items needed to buy an extra pail from the urchins (using both of their connected cards, respectively). These items are hard to come by at low levels of the watchful stat.
8. You can get 1 point of ToL from the advent calendar linked above if it hasn't expired already.
9. Note, many options on using a pail of snow cap at (cannot be used) at ToL 6 or greater. So be careful not to waste pails if you find you have an excess.

Detailed description:

If you are a very new player, and your stats are low and you have few echos, it is going to be tough to get a Soothe & Cooper Long-Box. A more established player would have a quality known as Scholar of the Correspondence (SoTC for short) at level 10, and an expensive item known as a Semiotic Monocle. These two things would make getting the Long-Box trivial, but I will try to help you out as you most likely cannot get these two things in time if you don’t have them already.

Your goal is to collect the seasonal currency known as Putting the Pieces Together: Taste of Lacre (ToL for short). A Soothe & Cooper Long-Box costs 6 ToL.

You get your first point of ToL from an item known as An Unusual Pail of So-Called Snow. You get these Pails of Snow once a week from a story called &quotSnowbound&quot that appears throughout London starting the week of December 12th (if you started after the 12th you may have missed the first Pail). In the Snowbound story, you shovel the snow from the path leading to your Lodgings for 5 actions and create 1 pail of snow. Snowbound appears 4 times (ie for 4 weeks) so you can get 4x An Unusual Pail of So-Called Snow this way.

Use the pail from the curiosities section of your inventory. If you had the SoTC 10 and the Semiotic Monocle, you can use those items and qualities to get 3 points of ToL from each pail of snow. So you would only need 2 pails to get to 6 and buy the Long-Box in that case.

Almost every option on use a pail of snow (but not all) gives at least 1 point of ToL. If you don’t have SoTC and a Monocle, you are only going to get about 1 point of ToL per pail. So if you started playing before December 12th you should get 4 points of ToL from your 4 pails (the cheapest option is to dunk a soul in the pail). If you use the advent code above before it expires you can get 1 more point of ToL bringing your total to 5. There was an advent calendar code for getting an extra pail, but that has already expired if you haven’t used it already. If you started your account after the week of December 12th meaning you don’t already have 1 pail in your inventory, it’s going to set you back and make it even harder to get to 6 points of ToL.

So how do you get more points of ToL? One option is to literally sell your soul to the devils. On the Devils connected card, you can sell your soul for 1x Nightwhisper, and 7x Storm Threnodies. These items are the exact price that the Urchins are asking for on their connections card. If you sell your soul to the Devils, you will also need to grind your Connected: The Urchins quality to at least level 20, which isn’t too hard to do (get to 10 at Mrs Plenty’s, then buy a rookery password from the pawnbroker in the bazaar tab and feed it reprehensible lizards, also purchased from the bazaar to get to 20). You can buy extra pails on the Urchins connected card. This extra pail can get you to ToL 6 from 5.

If you want to get more nightwhispers beyond selling your soul, to buy more pails, you’ll need a fairly high watchful stat. Watchful 60 is the lowest you can attempt to find them from Forgotten Quarter Expeditions, and around watchful 110 makes finding them much easier to find using the Fidgeting Writer story from the tales of terror item.

A second option is to try and get the remaining points of ToL from the 12 days of Mr Sacks storyline which is a Seasonal Event that shows up in your card deck starting on Christmas Day and lasts throughout January. By having specific items and choosing the correct path through this content you can get as much as 4 points of ToL (5 if you have the correct high level profession) as well as more pails of snow. It’s going to be tricky for a new player.

The first opportunity to get a point of ToL from the 12 days is on Day 2 of the storyline. You will need an item called Greyfields First Sporing, a wines item. Even if you don’t have good stats you can still get this item. In your opportunity deck, there is a card called &quotMr Wines is holding a sale!&quot. On it there is an option called &quotthe unlabeled box&quot, which requires you to pay 1x Touching Love Story item for a random chance to either get a bottle of Black Wings Absinthe or a bottle of Greyfields First Sporing. You can get love stories very easily by converting Nostalgia items from your inventory using Connected: Bohemians. You can get low amounts of connected bohemians from Mrs Plenty’s Carnival if you don’t have some already. Giving Day 2 Mr Sacks a bottle of Greyfields First Sporing will get you 1 point of ToL.

If you don’t mind spending the game’s premium currency, Day 4 of the 12 days of Mr Sacks will let you buy an optional storyline that will give you extra points of ToL if you select the associated options on later days of the event. You are supposed to spend these points on buying the end reward from the fate storyline (you don’t have to, but it’s often a rare item), but some of the stories (I think the more expensive ones) may give you 1 or 2 spare points of ToL.

Your next opportunity to get a point of ToL from the 12 days of Mr Sacks is on Day 5 of the storyline. To get it, you need to go to Veilgarden, then to The Singing Mandrake, and select the story &quotFinish a Libretto&quot to gain the Celestial poetry school quality. This requires Romantic Notions (a Nostalgia item you can get by converting up from honey) and a quality known as Melancholy at level 4. Getting Melancholy to 4 is the trickiest part of getting this point of ToL. I’m not sure if there is a good way to raise Melancholy to 4 quickly at low levels of stats if you don’t already have it. Someone else on the forums may know though.

The easiest free point of ToL from the 12 days of Mr Sacks is on Day 8. You get a point of ToL if you invite Mr Shacksh into your home. You don’t need any special items or qualities to get this point of ToL so this is a good option for you.

An easy free pail of snow can be gained on Day 9 of the 12 Days of Mr Sacks. You get a pail of snow for choosing the option to &quotAccept His Heart and Lights&quot. Again this doesn’t require any special items or qualities so it’s perfect for you.

There’s a point of ToL available on day 11 if you have an advanced profession of Doctor or Notary, but that’s late game stuff you can’t do as a fairly new player.

Finally, you can get a point of ToL and a free pail on Day 12 if you take advantage of Mr Sacks at his limit. This is also perfect for you as a new player.

Let me know if you have any questions.

It looks like I’ll have a hellish amount of ToL and extra pails this Sacksmas, so I might as well go for Noman tattoo, I guess.

One minor correction to Nitebrite’s excellent post. Selling your soul to the devils isn’t on their card but on The Western Tower: a Guest Room at the Brass Embassy

Depending on if you make your Noman on the last week of January (risky!) or the second to last week of January, you’ll need like between 298 to 364 levels of Noman’s Friend (NF for short) to more or less guarantee survival until Lilac shows up. You start with 100 Noman’s Friend, and you can convert 1 ToL into 3 points of NF. So you’ll want to have like 66 to 88 spare ToL to go for the Noman, although if you feel lucky average luck (as opposed to a guaranteed survival) is closer to 199 to 232 levels of NF required (33 to 44 spare ToL). If you have the devils luck and the RNG has pity on you, it is technically even possible to have a noman survive off of just the initial 100 points of NF (the odds of this happening are terrible). In any case, the noman tattoo is considered an expensive end game grind for a reason, but if you do chose to pursue it I wish you good luck :-)

you guys are freaking santa thank you
I do have more questions though
first if I buy premium(exceptional friend) does it give me 1 extra candle that regens actions or only a capacity boost to 40 action points?

NiteBrite I did get the taste of lacre yersteday
I only have 2 tase of lacre though
my stats are 62W,58S,22D,38P

As an Exceptional Friend, you get two action candles. What this means is that actions still accumulate at a rate of 1 every 10 minutes, but they keep accumulating until 40, not until 20 (so to use all actions, you don’t need to play every 3:20 hours, but every 6:40 hours).

You opportunity card deck can also hold up to 10 cards, instead of the usual 6.

You sign up for Exceptional Friendship via the Fate tab.

EF doesn’t give you more actions, you always have 144 actions a day. It gives you a second candle of capacity so that you can check in less frequently without losing actions. A two candle account can go idle from empty for around 7 hours before wasting an action due to the candles filling up. It also increases your card hand capacity to 10 cards instead of 6 but again it doesn’t give you more cards than you would get if you checked into the game and played them every hour on the hour. Think of EF as a convenience adder rather than as a speed up. EF also comes with access to the house of chimes, and access to the monthly Exceptional Stories (like a monthly issued magazine, its not retroactive though) which are short but interesting add-on stories.
