You can also use Notability for getting Master’s Blood, or to trade for K&C prize tokens.
And you may become very popular if you give out your Notability to those looking for their first level of it.
Not to bring up an undead horse, but when you’re grinding for 30+ levels within a week (as I need to go from 8 to 9), what DO you do? Particularly since my Persausive has hit cap, I’d therefore much rather use other stats to gain MW but it’s fairly hard to do so. Item conversions all day? Chess matches until your eyes cross?
Salons and orphanages are rather potent ways to gain MW, as you can slowly convert items and connections into Pursuing a Scheme then cash a bunch out all at once as needed. I believe Salons are slightly better in terms of the MW gain but Orphanages allow you to purchase a Laconic Prodigy, one of the best companions in the game, for Fate.
For day to day grind, side conversions give the best rate of MW to actions. Alternatively you could steal a large number of tales of terror ahead of time and do a flurry of conversions - not the best rate action wise, but gives bonuses in the form of incunabula.
For big chunks of waves, though, Optimatum is right - salon or orphanage. The salon is cheaper to run, so unless you want the laconic prodigy I’d recommend it (you can always grind for the prodigy then swap your orphanage for a salon, but that’s expensive). The options to invite other players of the right profession (correspondent, author, crooked cross, trickster) are very effective, but inviting the sardonic music hall singer or the diplomat are also great & don’t depend on other people. You’ll get mega waves from inviting the duchess, which costs a midnight matriarch.

I’ve an Salon already; I suppose the problem is that I draw the card at best once a week, and I drew it down my Scheme stat fairly seriously recently in having two (player) visitors when I gained my 8th point.

The options open at any given time as to who can be invited vary with Airs. The Duchess option is very potent and has a chance to cost the Matriarch, in which case you get more waves. Also if you happen to be acquainted with a certain dazzling member of the royal family and also possess a point of fate, you can obtain far more Waves than you need. (If I recall correctly it can send you straight from 0 to 50 MW but as with all the options the results fall within a range.)
Sounds like trimming your deck a bit could help, possibly with a bit of grinding for connections to convert as well. If you need the notability soon though conversions are of course much more costly in actions but build up MW far more consistently. Schemes are more of a long-term investment so usually I find it’s best to spend a while raising the quality before actually trying to increase my notability, but of course this doesn’t work when the calendar imposes a deadline.

Been there, done that: I’ve wiped out Rubbery (again) and Hell (which I’ve rarely had) last week. It seems to have at least taken out the ubiquitous Rubbery Cards, though I need to decide if the practical applications of having no Church outweigh the my preference of maintaining it… I don’t think I can practically give up any other faction as easily except for the Widow, since I keep hitting the Docks for expeditions (which aren’t too shabby for MW, at least today).
Some deck trimming should definitely help. The Handsome Townhouse card that houses the salon options is a Frequent draw, so unless the RNG really despises you it should come up with some regularity. As Màiread mentions, Tales of Terror are another way you can stock up potential MW for a big push to hit a high requirement for the next point of Notability. If you ever plan on capturing an Impossible Theorem, building a stockpile of Uncanny Incunabulum ahead of time will make that a little less painful.
On an action for action basis, side conversions probably provide the most MW, but it’s a slow, unprofitable grind. I personally like doing Heists at Baseborn & Fowlingpiece’s Offices, which provides less MW per action, but is much more profitable and, I find, more interesting. Also a good way to grind up Shadowy, if that’s something you need to do.

On the other hand, the personal invites are quite lucrative for the other person, so by sending them, you initiate a win-win situation, most likely.
Looks like I need to implore the Gods of Statistical Significance a bit more, as I am in a remote address and haven’t seen the townhouse all week. Sigh. Conflict card level is 5 connection, so quite low, but having started playing later than some I only have connections in the 30s and the 40s, so it’s not too painful.
I am glad to hear though that the invites are mutually beneficial as I didn’t want to otherwise trouble friends about them. The Theorem is on my long range radar, but quite present. And once I’m out of needing to try hunting for that Salon to use it, I may go back to heists myself for that purpose.
Thank you all! Nice to know I’ve generally an idea of what’s going on, but the details are very helpful.
Not long after writing that, I did draw the Salon today and had a bright new author to come visit (many thanks Mal!) so I did manage my notability increase. Hope to same to you!

What’s that anti-bad luck thing called again?

In Fallen London, things which are lucky are likely to be devoured by plants :)
