Worth the Money?

I have a Haunted Looking Dog, and I was thinking of upgrading to a different pet. I noticed the Midnight Matriarch, but I also noticed that for the 400 Echo price tag, it only gave another +2 Watchful. Is the investment worth it, or should I save my pennies?

If you’re only going to invest in one companion the Scuttling Squad for 500 echoes is the way to go. It’s the best fateless Shadowy and Dangerous companion and the best fateless watchful companion excluding goats.

Any creature that gives you a Watchful boost of more than +6 is going to cost something extra, either in Fate (i.e., real world money), actions, or Echoes. Whether you want to spend the Echoes for another +2 will depend on how quickly you want to obtain a greater boost to your Watchful stat .

Bear in mind also that there are other expenditures you can make at the Bazaar that will boost Watchful. For example, you’ve said that 400 Echoes seems like a lot for another +2 Watchful. But how does 420 Echoes for another +4 Watchful sound? That’s what a Smock of 4,308 Pockets costs at the Bazaar, it gives you +10 Watchful when equipped, and you can still equip your Dog.

I suggest you look at all of the equippable items you can get at the Bazaar, decide what your Watchful stat target is, and see what combinations of items might get you there.

As An Individual said, your best option is the Scuttering Squad for 500 Echoes, which increases Dangerous, Shadowy and Watchful by 8.

I agree with An Individual if you are looking for best bang for the Echoes overall, since it gives large boosts to two different stats. However, it’s still unclear what Gannondorf is hoping to maximize.

You could probably get the Scuttering Squad for free (from Rat of Glory) during the Advent calendar

The Rat of Glory was given out in 2013 and 2015 but not 2014 so who knows if it will appear again (maybe it’s allergic to even numbers). The calendar changes each year and with the exception of long running recurring items like the Meticulously Altered Stocking I wouldn’t count on it giving out the same items twice.

Something I forgot to mention is that the Scuttling Squad (composed of rats) doesn’t get a long with the Midnight Matriarch (which is a cat). Owning them both at the same time introduces a rather nasty undiscardable card that pops up occasionally to either double your suspicion or cost you a large number of Memories of Light. So regardless of what you do I’d recommend only purchasing one of them.

screw it, getting the matriarch anyways

Whichever you choose, don’t sell the dog: the card to acquire it is very uncommon and you may have trouble finding it again later.

Keep in mind that the various festivals will bring companions at no echo cost, such as the Submerged Rector this round. The Feast of the Rose has famously several companions available (some via Fate).

The midnight matriarch … is a cat? I thought it was an owl! How have i never seen this before? My eyes are open…

I played the game for at least six months thinking the same thing. I felt horrified and delighted in equal measure.

When people talk about which equipables are best, do they disregard professions? The Stalker occupation gives a Perspicacious Lurker which gives +9 to Watchful and +9 to dangerous, a very respectable score, superior to the Scuttering Squad in some ways.

Yup, professions are indeed disregarded, since you can only have one profession item at a time and thus will need to fill all the other slots with non-profession items.

Some of the other profession items are best in slot with no buyable equipment equivalent: this particularly goes for the Tier 3 Professions, like Glassman or Monster Hunter, or even Midnighter if you want to maximize BDR.

If you’re looking for Watchful in particular, the Overgoat/Ubergoat purchases are all but necessarily for the highest level challenges anyway. And I believe, though I don’t have one myself, there’s a Fate locked Prodigy who’s pretty best or second best in class for three stats.

I was playing well over a year before I realized this. In fact, I actually bought one thinking it was an owl and didn’t clue in until it and the Scuttling Squad were at each others throats. Of course, once I realized it I noticed the tail in the picture and it made a lot more sense. But it has a very owl like shape and the name isn’t helping matters.
