The new content of “The Affair of the Box” is awesome, but I always feel that I missed something. That’s because when I first started this story, I failed a challenge, and not like in almost every other storylet in this game, I couldn’t try it again. So I got it much later from Frank and Jaspar (are those their names?). They didn’t explain what it is, or why they give it to me. So since then I’m a bit confused…
May you please summarize the part of the story that I missed for me?
You’ve missed little. You won’t know what’s in the box until you open the box.
You steal the box and come back to find the fence has buggered off. Then you more or less ignore it until Jasper and Frank come knocking.
Though, on a side note for why Jasper and Frank might give you the box, given what you learn in the new content: I believe Jasper and Frank do not work for Mr. Stones.

I assumed they were working for Stones, and they gave the box to you so you would keep it safe. The Princesses were a red herring.
Except that wouldn’t make a lot of sense. Why would they try to send you to find a key in the first place if they gave it to you to keep it safe? If they thought you were going to try and open it, they would have just kept it.
I believe Jasper and Franks work for one of the other masters, and were after the box to try and intercept it. You got to it first and your early confrontation with them is because they thought you were reclaiming it for Stones. Once it turned out that wasn’t the case, they decided to work with you.
I heard part of what happens if you align with Stones. Frank and Jasper appear to be working for him. Also, from aligning with Fires “it’s probably not after you in person if the Clay twins haven’t turned up already.”
Stones isn’t after you if the Clay twin’s aren’t chasing you. This implies (if not directly states) they work for Stones.
I figure they work for Stones, but also work for themselves - they’re happy to send you snooping into their employer’s affairs if they think they might profit from it, knowing that if you get too far, they’ll be sent to stop you - and will know exactly where to find you.
I got the impression that they were effectively freelance. Individual Masters are their primary clients, but I would imagine if you had a need for them, the echos to pay for it, and they had no current commitments, you could hire them.
