And are they valuable?
Hush, people ! I think I’ve heard the birth of a smuggler somewhere nearby…
I’m innocent!
They are a box lined with mirrors, used to store and transport exotic lights.
Oooh, I see. But, sinister lean in
Are they /valuable/?

They’re mostly a Knife & Candle weapon for Baroque players. I don’t think we can use them for anything else right now.
They are special equipment, so I would say yes, but much less than what you can transport in them.
Oh. I wonder why FL tells one to be careful when telling people about owning it?
Back in 2013, Mirrorcatch Boxes were first introduced by way of a very limited-use access code hidden behind a small puzzle (only 100 were given out). Because of the rarity, there was also added a method of theft – if you were an Iron League Knife-and-Candle player, you could, at great expense, steal Mirrorcatch Boxes from anyone in London (even if they weren’t themselves playing K&C).
As of September’s Exceptional Story they are much, much easier to find and the theft of boxes has been limited to only other Iron League players, so that warning is now an artifact of a previous time. (There was a second reason for this limitation, involving intrigues going all the way up to a Master of the Bazaar, but it’s rather sordid business.)
Before September’s Exceptional Story there were only 100 Mirrorcatch Boxes in existence, available from a puzzle.
Jeremy got the answer before me! Still, the article is an interesting read if you want to know more about it. :)

The year in which they were given out also presented an limited opportunity for some players to experience a momentary glimpse of daylight. If one had a Mirrorcatch Box, there was a storylet that allowed one to do…something. Unfortunately, none of the players who got to experience daylight also had a box, so we never got to know what that storylet did.
With the Cut With Moonlight storylet, we can probably surmise that the option allowed one to catch sunlight in the box.
So, if you can make your way to the surface, presumably, you could catch some daylight in your Mirrorcatch Box. But i wouldn’t recommend it.
I’m still curious about what that option did. I imagine the text would have been more notable than the prize, but still.
Has anyone ever thought to ask the staff what was the reward and text for that option? Or are they intentionally keeping it secret?

As someone who did exactly this (but was unable to catch any light while there with the box), I can say that 100% it was very unwise ;)
That is to say I totally took one of the 100 into the light* haha.

Interesting history.
