Writer Chris recommends Tanith Lee, including the Flat Earth series (a lush cycle of fantasy folk tales about the price of obsession and the destructive whims of gods) and the stone-cold banger of a sword-and-sorcery novella Companions on the Road, about a trio of travellers being hounded by their past sins and the vengeful dead. “Lee is one of the greats: lavish, sensual prose, an unstoppable imagination, and a casual, scornful boldness that – upon realising the sort of stories she wanted to read didn’t exist – led her to invent entire genres and styles to bring them into being.”
