Weekly Fallen London Questions, 27/01/2025

Here’s this week’s thread for quick Fallen London questions!

What’s so special about roast chestnuts anyways? There’s lots of food in Fallen London, and probably some of it might even be non-fungal. So why is that the only foodstuff that won’t make things worse.

I’m guessing it’s because roasted chestnuts were a common street food in Victorian London, so if your character decides ‘I need to eat some food right now’ rather than giving in to their darkest cravings, chestnuts could easily be the first thing that they find.

I always thought “roasted chestnuts” was a code for something else, because there’s no way we can still find those at an affordable price down there.

Oh, they’re almost certainly faux-chestnuts made of the nuttiest mushrooms the seller could find. In fact, we see both kinds for sale in Mask of the Rose.

Why do all the Rubbery Men (that I’ve seen) have exactly two eyes and a bunch of tentacles where a human would have a mouth? Why are they all green? Aren’t they the people who practice Shapeling Arts 24/7?
If it’s just so they could look more like humans, and all the weirder ones stay in the Flute Street, then why have none of them made a throat capable of speaking English yet? Is that so hard to do?

Have you met the Solitary Glim-sculptor?

How about we head back to my place and have some “roasted” “chestnuts”?

Maybe there are, in fact, many Rubbery Men who pass as human and the green tentacle ones are around to distract us from those …
