Here’s this week’s thread for any Fallen London questions you don’t want to start a whole thread for!
Does anyone wish to research the Affluent Photographer with me?
Current contacts, or new ones welcome! (Also happy to just add new contacts)
I see that the Duchess’s portrait art has been changed, noticed it during a heist.
Before and after:
Need a coherent art style for the game: do you want more realism or a cartoony-caricature style?
New art! Always exciting to see. The general trend is toward realism, and usually for the better, though there are one or two older pieces that have a certain je ne sais quoi that their replacements lack.
The Duchess’s evolution has been particularly interesting, as the early concept for her was quite different:

I wonder if there’s a specific inciting incident for this art update, especially if nothing else has been updated. Maybe next month’s ES is about the Duchess?
I like the new high-detail oil-painting style. I don’t mind the mish-mash of different eras, at this point I think it’s practically part of the game’s visual identity. I think there’s a purpose for icons that look like icons, like all the stat images, and why I still prefer the old art for Newspaper. But the portraits especially, I think the art team does a great job of communicating personality with the new stuff.
One thing I miss about the old cartoony stuff was the “upgrade lines,” especially some of the old Hallowmas art. Whitsun animals show a clear progression, but personally I loved just how blatant it used to be that the “new” Urchin is literally the old Urchin with a different hat.
When they upgraded the art for the Devious Henchmen, it broke a similar series.
Oh dear. The old one is so much more expressive. Even though the new one has the side eye, she just doesn’t look as scheming or as dangerous. And the draped cat doesn’t help.
Maybe a silly question, but to confirm-- in using the Rat Market for echo grinding, does one sell some items there and then just wait for the market to turn them into rostygold (+ the other currencies) and then sell that at the Bazaar? Or is there a step I’m missing?
Yes and no.
When your Rat Shillings expire, you get their full Echo value in Rostygold and other useful currencies, so it’s generally good to let Shillings expire.
On the other hand, some of the Currency items you get (e.g. Justificandes) require some work to be converted back to Echoes.
If you want to get full Echo value immediately, instead, you can buy from the Rat Market any of the items costing 1 Rat Shilling, e.g. Inklings of Identity: these can also be sold back to the Bazaar at full Echo value.
