Weekly Fallen London Questions, 1/1/2018

Skipping the details, what actual parts are you talking about? Flukes or is there anything else?
From what I’ve heard, it’s the Flukes, yeah. And then the rubberies are mostly concerned with tending to their flukes, and might even be spawned from them or something along those lines.
I don’t actually remember anything more than that; it’s just something I remember reading somewhere once.
The advent calendar, specifically the item unlocked on the 24th, increased taste of lacre by 1. This put me at level 6. I recall with certainty that it was exactly level 6 because I was annoyed that I could no longer use my monocle to gain ToL.

Today, after finishing the 12 days of Mr Sacks, and before playing any of the options in the &quotPenstock’s Wicket&quot storylet, I was at ToL level FOUR.

Don’t the twelve days INCREASE taste of lacre? How could I have possibly lost two levels since christmas?
Did you investigate Mr Sacks with a faction? Nothing listed on the wiki should lower ToL, but some of the Fate-locked options might. Alternatively, did you purchase any Tears in the Nadir?

I have a lore question. What was Mr. Fire’s domain of control before London?

In London he seems to be doing pretty well being the boss of fuel and weapons, but what did he control before that? Bonfires? Torches? Charcoal? We know candles weren’t his. It just seems like the “Fire” moniker would not have had much to do in previous cities especially since Mr. Irons would be in charge of forges.

I’m curious if there was any lore on this sort of thing or if maybe his name used to be different.

Everyone has to burn fuel to for heat and light, just as everyone has to cook food and buy weaponry. That said, he is much happier with London and its industries than any of the older cities, so perhaps he used to be far less prominent.

From Dubious Attribution, in the Nadir:

So, incense and candles.

is the website down? i thought it was just my bad internet but everything else works fine

I can’t get on - just error msg

Same here, errors or it just hangs.

It might be part of the whole Meltown and Spectre flaws. A lot of web hosting companies are madly patching servers right now. It might be causing the outages?

I think most stuff should have already been patched some days ago. That being said, on workloads with a lot of IO access (such as database-heavy applications - like Fallen London), slowdowns from the patch will be heaviest. Combine this with the fact that FL never had the most robust and snappy setup (it frequently takes me 1-2 seconds to e.g. draw a card), and the current rush now that major seasonal limited-time content is available, and it might just have been enough to bring the game to its knees entirely.

So…
Are we snowbound?
Should we call the masters or shovel ourselves?

Yes, I second that! Specially that I was too busy/sick and I only ended up with 14 ToL.
But the rubbery story was worth it and heart warming! Or breaking if you look at it from the other side.

Let me grumble about the fact that Wicked is unlocked only after you’ve played the “12 Days of Sackmas” storyline (ish).
First of all, what if I don’t wanna play?
Secondly, given the fact that Noman’s price changes as time goes on, that is highly unfair. I am still at day 9 on the character I /really/ need a Noman for, and it’s bugging me quite a lot.

Yet another stupid question on a matter of lacre: I accessed Penstock Wicket with 7 ToL and 2 Pails. Do I have any options to reach ToL 9? (I have no Surmise, no Monocle, and no access to Nadir, and low Correspondence level).

I understand your second point, but not the first one:

What do you mean by &quotwhat if I don’t wanna play&quot? Of course you’re free to not play the game. You might as well resent the fact that you need to first increase Casing before doing Thefts in the Flit (&quotbut what if I don’t want to play the part of raising Casing&quot), or even resent hainv to play Mr Sacks’s Day 3 card before playing the Day 4 card.

The Wicket is the culmination of the 12 days of Mr Sacks story. Play it, or don’t. But it’s weird to complain about having to play the first part of a story before playing the conclusion.

Using Tears of the Bazaar might be your only option at this point.

I’ve heard the Noman can reduce your quirks - but can I realistically choose which ones, and keep intact the ones I value, or is that unrealistic (either because of randomness or because all quirks get lowered at once or something like that)? I have about 3-4 quirks at, or near, 15 that I’d loathe to drop (since most of them need a lot of echoes to build back up).

If you don’t want to interact with the Masters for RP reasons, then I think that’s the exact purpose of the &quotMr Sacks, take my best regards!&quot option that’s available on nearly every single day. 12 days still passes, but you get to grumpily watch from the sidelines and stay as uninvolved as you can. As for skipping the 12 days entirely? Well, from an in-universe perspective, Sacks is going around London, you can’t well prevent him from doing that. Ignoring/dismissing him when he does come around is just about the best thing you can do, and luckily, the game gives you the option to do just that.

Simply creating the Noman costs 1CP of every quirk; to progress the Noman story you’ll either need to continually feed it quirks - you can choose which quirks, as long as the quirk in question is above 4, and each time it will take 6CP of that quirk from you - or by telling about your Ambition (which is a slower way to do it but leaves quirks intact).

Oh ok, that’s nice! Thanks for the info.

Now I just need to get the darn Urchins card to buy an extra pail. 2 Lacre short to get everything I want, dangnabbit.

Last time I checked, the option to buy lacre wasn’t on the Urchin card any more.

I just drew the Urchins card. The option is still there.
