The Game of Knife and Candle

Oh hey, you can join the moon league directly from the iron league now. Convenient. Also, it seems you cannot join the bronze league directly from the iron league? A couple NPC stabs before I rejoin and I’ll be mostly back to where I was.

Some of the latest changes:

- The Bronze League is gone! It has fulfilled its initial purpose. Former Bronze League members should log in now to receive recognition of their efforts. Intrepid Moon League explorers have also received a little something.
- Players may move freely between the Iron and Moon Leagues, but their Form is reset in each case.
- The Moon League now permits players to attack only once they’ve made two Moves. (Before that point, they can withdraw from the match.)
- Players now take turns to make Moves (but can still attack at any time after the first two Moves: this is to discourage lengthy stalemates and deal with drop-outs)
- Moves have a bonus of +10, rather than +5.
- Sponsorships, in case you hadn’t noticed, are live. Moon League players with a Sponsorship will receive additional rewards after a hunt.
- Moon League players who lose all their Iron Knife Tokens will no longer be thrown out of the Game.

The Game will continue to evolve, but the key division is now between the Iron League (simple, casual, melee) and the Moon League (more complex, more engaged, duels). Future Leagues will likely fall one side or another of this boundary.

Thanks for all your feedback, bug reports and whatnot: much appreciated.

Alexis, you beautiful bastard, thank you for all of your ongoing hard work. This most recent incarnation of K&C only gets more and more enjoyable as it evolves.

Love the new changes Alexis, though I don’t know about being forced to wait until a player makes a move after I do. But I am more than happy to test out this tweaked system.

Someone has initiated a Moon League Hunt on my alt but they are unable to make a move. When they select any of the options all that appears is “You have no friends eligible for this invitation. They need You are locked in a Hunt with (you) 1”

any suggestions on what to do apart from choose the withdraw option?

Now THIS is my SPEED! Locked for generations unending in a deadly-deadly game of cat and also-cat!

And the withdraw option doesn’t work either - guess it is time for a bug report.

So, does this mean that the unfettered Rose is now no longer available?

It still requires a Bronze Token, which sadly no longer exist.

If someone’s challenged you, you still need to add them to your friends list before you can attack/move against them.

This is confusing, we know - so next patch we’ll be auto-adding users to your list when they’ve invited you to something (which will make Iron League revenge easier too). You’ll notice ‘friends’ starts being referred to as ‘contacts’, too, to reflect what it does more accurately.

So far I like the new changes to K&C, it really changes the dynamic. Now a feint really can carry weight. Not to mention those sponsorship awards just got a whole lot more attractive. As things stand now, there’s a couple comments

 1. If I were given a choice, I would attack first every time. A player on the defensive is open to a 1-2 punch every time, but if you are attacking, you know that the opposing player has to open themselves up to an attack. This is going to be less of an issue as players learn to feint and more items/options are introduced (can’t wait to see how gambits factor in).

 2. The use of alts… So when engaged in a duel, a player is essentially immune to all other attacks. This just became a super easy way for crafty players to attack and hide; just engage an alt in a duel. It might not be that big of a deal given the pace of moon, but it could become a problem, and certainly makes the use of the cottage sanctuary pointless. I guess there will always be issues with the use of alts as farms and other tricks like this.

3)So I engaged a player in a duel, and when they didn’t respond for a while, I abandoned the duel and challenged a different player. I was about to do the same, when it occurred to me that if I kept doing this, I would end up locking up people in a form where they cannot be engaged in a hunt, and thus they are out of the game for the time being, until they can find time to check their character and trudge through the form reset. This does not seem particularly fair, especially if a single player does it to several people, or a few avid players do it a couple times. That would shrink the pool of available participants for everyone

Thanks Alexis - that explains things. Sorry for the unnecessary bug report.

Don’t be! Email bug reports are always better than forum bug reports - but I realised the friends list issue would be a thing, so I came here to announce.

James: re (2) and (3) - Moon Leagues are moving away from ambush and towards consensuality, as it were. I’m considering making a Hunt start action be an optional invitation, since players can effectively already refuse rematches using Withdraw but I want to test some other changes first. It is basically now trivial to move to the Moon League and avoid aggression, but it’s also trivial to abandon your Form without changing Leagues. The one advantage of the Cottage sanctuary in the Iron League is that it doesn’t require you to abandon your Form and spend an opening regaining it, but this too may pass. re (1): I’m watching what people do, and may tune in a number of directions.

Man, so many interesting changes, and I have yet to partake in any of the action.

Question: Is there an ideal level or selection of qualities for playing the Game, or can anybody join and do equally well?

It is suggested by most that you have access to one of the four card lodgings before getting heavily into K&C play. It’s not a requirement by any standard, but it increases your chance of getting a card that gives an attack opportunity.

There is a sense in which the Moon League is almost a different game that happens to share the same name as the Iron/Bronze League version.

The Iron/Bronze League had forms as something you changed infrequently, with your Baroque being the result of past fights and Exotica being used to modify your stats. In the Moon League, forms are transitory, and modifications other than through Moves largely a waste of time.

I might have just missed it, but I didn’t notice a Moon League option to do a ‘Snatch and Grab’. Stealing items doesn’t really fit with the consensual nature of the league (and I can’t say the option will be missed), but it is another pretty big change.

It’s early days, but I think I like the new Moon League a lot. Step and counter-step, bluff and counter-bluff - it’s tricky and fun!

Also, in the Moon League you do not need cards to attack, unlike in the Iron League. (I sort of miss the Bronze League though, I’m going to need a LOT of tokens come the day . . . )

We all will.

So uh what happens when you run out of tokens in the Moon League? Do you get a free one or are you just incapable of attacking for a while or something?

i’m guessing the token cap hasn’t been lifted so i’m just going to ditch my Form and chill out with my 63 tokens, waiting.
waiting forever

Hoping the skull token requirement for the killstreak Rose awards is removed soon… If I lose the next attack before I can cash my killstreaks in, I may weep tears of pure pain!
