I am about to the point in my Light Fingers ambition where it appears I have to choose either a tatterskin shawl (clothing) or Lyon Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary (affiliation). The respective benefits are:
Do you have any recommendation for one of these over the other? I already have an affiliation (God’s editor) that yields 4 respectable so that gain from the Lyon… is not helpful. I have a piece of clothing that yields +2 to respectable and another that yields +1 dreaded so the only gain in BDR from the Tatterskin shawl is +1 to Biz. However, this beats the no useful BDR benefit at all available from the Lyon… I am leaning toward the Tatterskin shawl. Any reasons to rethink my current plan? Thanks.
I think you should make this decision more based on whether you would rather be a snake or a cat. Also, Lyon Pursuivant gives you an Addressed as: option, something which is almost unique among Ambition rewards.
Mechanically the differences are pretty small, and none of them are very much better than other equipment you could acquire. The big one that’s somewhat difficult to match is +1 Mithridacy in the clothes slot, but I think Fruits of the Zee has a replacement for that which can be obtained by anyone.
I might also take a gander at options unlocked by either reward. I think both of them change unlock options in the Dome of Scales, depending on which faction is Dominant.
Thanks. The role-playing aspects are of zero importance to me so my decision is based on the benefits provided by each alternative to later stories/challenges. I will see what I can find out about the “unlock options in the Dome of Scales”. Thanks, again.
The few points one way or another of shadowy/persuasive are pretty unimportant. If you don’t have another mithridacy clothing, Tatterskin Shawl is good. (There’s other ones, but they also take Fate.)
In the dome of scales the tatterskin shawl can give you 1 memory of much lesser self per action, which isn’t too useful but it’s something.
As the game evolved over the years, I learnt that it doesn’t matter if you rush to reach a grind nor does it matter if you pick something based on stats.
The role play experience and the lovely writing is all that matters! Maybe in 2 years these differences won’t be that significant because of new free/Fate items that will increase the stats more than enough. And, after 5-6 years FBG will release even more end-end game content. :D

I’m really looking forward to when the Railroad takes over the management of Hell in preparation for driving the Khanate from the Zee. ;)

I, for example, seldom even read the "lovely writing" and have zero interest in the role-playing aspects. You clearly differ from this. Neither approach is right or wrong. Each meets the needs of the person deciding what they want to do and how they want to do it.
I would take the Shawl for a different reason. Shadowy is my lowest stat. I don’t personally know of another clothing item that give a +8 bonus to Shadowy. (I played the Nemesis ambition, and thus did not have a chance to obtain the Shawl).
