Sunlight?
I must say I really enjoyed this little event. Fallen London has always been intriguing and engaging and a number of other flattering words but “exciting” has never been among them–but for this brief fleeting moment it was exciting. And most of the people who missed it aren’t on the forums and will never know they missed anything. I say to Alexis, Well done.

Aside: I do hope there will be another way to get a crab some day, since I missed them at Christmas.
This is my sentiment exactly, it was a very interesting and new kind of entertainment that doesn’t usually happen in Fallen London so I’m glad it happened.

Then again I got to take part so I’m kind of bias.

it was actually really exciting which is impressive for a game that’s more of a giant interactive novel
i just wish more people could have experienced it

I also found that the fact that everyone was frantically reporting on it in the forums at the same time really made it more enjoyable then if I just did the actions on my own.

Yeah, it was fun and super exciting - and a bit frustrating, not to have enough actions. A delivery of coffee for everyone right before it would have been a nice touch. (I know there was coffee delivered during the fest, but that was because of the second chances bug, not in anticipation of the event…)

A bit off topic for this thread, but I never took up exceptional friend status again once the action refresh was stopped; if it came with a delivery of coffee every month I would take it up again without a second thought.

I’ve been quite vigorous on these boards lately in defence of artistic privilege, so let me say that I do recognise there’s a point at which ‘devotion to vision’ turns into ‘being a dick’. So let me commit to this: there will be time-limited events, there will be cool stuff that not everyone sees, but we’re not going to end the game on a whim, we’re not going to lock people permanently out of core plotlines because they’re a little bit unlucky. If it looks like that’s happened, then don’t panic! Either you’ll be reassured shortly, or we did a bug.

Ahh! That is very good to hear!

I am not averse to ephemeral content, at least not in theory. Yes, I am disappointed I missed the event (especially since I was online at the time but waiting for actions to refresh). Then again, there are several things in this game which I have missed. I was not online at all during the feast last year for example.

Though I can only speak of my personal feelings I think one of the things which angered so many people was that this seemed (at the time at least) to be a keystone event. I was half-expecting to see something on the last day of the event and there it was: a golden storylette that finished off not only The Feast of the Exceptional Rose but the lacer content as well. And then just like that it disappeared If this had been a truly random event and not one that seemed so important I don’t think people would have minded so much. It would just be another small thing they missed out on like some of the Fate locked content. Because of it’s perceived importance however, the whole thing turned into “OMG! I can’t believe they did that!”

Another thing I found annoying was that there was no indication this was a limited time event. The first time I clicked on it I saw that all the choices cost ten actions. Thinking the storylette would be up for at least a day I went off for an hour to let my candle refresh. When I came back I clicked on the button only to have the story LITERALLY vanish in front of my eyes! Shock! Disbelief I refreshed the page multiple times thinking there had been an error. I checked the time, not even midnight GMT yet. What’s this? a message on the front page “The feast is over, welcome to March”. They didn’t! They did! Anger, outrage, oh the injustice of it all!

In summation: while I do respect your artistic ability to do these sorts of events, even without advanced warning, It would be nice if in the future some small concession is made to the players. Namely: that you make it clear that this IS a time sensitive event and to assure other players that they will eventually be able to access the information/rewards by some other means. I know real life seldom gives us such warnings but as someone pointed out: “this is a game and it’s meant to be fun”

How much cofee was spent on the event anyway? I have 45, I suspect if I was around and drank all of that, I would be stinking rich now… But I probably would not drink more then one or two cups.

I still buy the friendship status. Last time I stopped my subscription, I gradually lost interest and stopped playing for several months. Just could not continue with one candle. It feels so limiting and I feel compelled to use up those actions every hour… With two candles it’s easier. Some cofee for the friends would be cool of course.

The other things that people need to remember is that there is a slew of content you never had access to due to time and no one is complaining about that. Most people weren’t able to be involved in the Knife & Candle. Even fewer have Apples of Discord. Few of you have Wolfie or a Handsome Lad with a Healthy Appetite or a Rubbery Investigator or a Selection of Jilts Treasures. Very, very few of you were around during the Feat of '89 for the Admired competition. There is stuff you missed and there is stuff you will miss.
I missed it too. It doesn’t feel great. While that actor did a great improv scene, he did it at my local pub I go to every day and I’ve bought every DVD of every film he’s ever done and I really, really regret that I missed it. Life is full of disappointment.
It also feels like the greatest city in the world, the one I’ve lived in my whole life, has been dragged underground by bats! We’re English(even those of you who aren’t, if you’re playing Fallen London, are a little English) and we endure. Stiff upper lip. Close your eyes, and think of England, chaps. All is well and all shall be well.

I can’t decide if this is the greatest or the worst defense of Imperialism I’ve ever heard. I’d be shocked if Benjamin Disraeli never said something like this. Then again, maybe not everything should be taken in a 19th century context.

I tend to dip in and out of the game throughout the day, so usually the only time I miss out on actions is during the night, or at weekends if I’m out and about. I realise this makes me sound a little obsessed with the game :)

In fairness though it wasn’t totally clear the storylet did say it would disappear in a few minutes…

Yes, I do realize there are a great many things I have missed. I do wish I had not missed quite so much but as you say there will undoubtedly be more. In this case, I had heard the noted actor was at the pub and was on my way over when I got stuck in traffic. I only narrowly missed seeing him as he snuck out the back door just as I was walking in. Everyone was still laughing and talking about what a great show it was. For a moment I thought he was still there and looked for him but he had already gone. True, life is full of disappointments.

Again, I think what caused such commotion Was how important this storylett seemed. If the great actor was noted for improv, this would just be another of his shows I missed. Regrettable though it was, I could always hope to catch some future performance. This felt as though he had declared it his last and final appearance, after which he intended to go into hiding and never be seen by the public again.

Hmm…perhaps we’ve gotten enough mileage out of that metaphor…

…I just realized. This is exactly like the drama over the Lost Shores event in GW2.

(For those who don’t know, there was a huge in-game event to hunt and kill this ancient evil monster. It was one-time only. Some people were not amused.)

What the heck is a GW2?

guild wars 2 i’d assume

Not to be argumentative in the slightest, but to me there’s quite a difference between missing content because you hadn’t started playing the game at that point and missing content because you didn’t happen to be online at the right time. I can quite understand the sense of disappointment some people feel at missing it; I think FB should be proud of that, to be honest, as it shows how attached we all are to the game and want to experience absolutely everything we can.

I was playing Dungeons & Dragons (and also BatteLore) with friends so I had no time to play much Friday evening. I checked in once and then saw a gold storylet with something about sunshine. But when I clicked it it just loaded the Carnival again.

Indeed; I hope that one day I can produce something, whether it be a game or a story or some other work of art, that affects people in such a strong way. Well said.

It was an impressive experience. I felt a sense of wonder, even though I know that we are all just reading bits of text that are part of a browser game. It was one of the more brilliant bits of Fallen London, which has a lot of brilliant bits in it.

Agreed, on all counts. Though I must admit, the Sunlight content was the first thing to make me happy that I no longer have a 9 to 5 job, since if I did I would have missed all of it.

I know it’s done on free time/just extra/etc, but that doesn’t really mean players don’t have a right to criticize it.

With that said, I can’t actually find anyone I know happy with the event, even ones who managed to experience it. I know some people who are quitting the game, some who have sunk into ambivalence… nobody actually happy with it. Even people who were happy at first are now disgruntled because of how disappointed everyone else is.

It was a nice experiment and all, something sudden and very temporary, but I’m not sure the experiment succeeded?
