Sunlight?

OK, so I played throuh the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, had quite a good time dancing, exchanging gifts and dreaming with the Princess, then yesterday I go out for a birthday, come back home and discover I missed all this for about half an hour. Reaction:

Indeed. Would it have been so hard to simply have the gold storylet unlock at the dawn of the last day, and stay there until played through? The time-altered-rewards could easily be managed the same way so many other storylets are in Fallen London. Have a quality that changes as you play it, build it like a progressing story. “The Spire-sun starts shining, what do?”, “The Spire-sun is at its brightest, what do?”, and finally “The Spire-sun is fading, what do?”. Limiting it the way they did leads to excluding the majority of the playerbase at best, and sours the entire Feast for some people at worst.

Another idea. We had that time-limited hat during the Feast, didn’t we? The first action of the event could give a similar item, and then you would have an hour or two to do sunlight related activities. After that you lose the “Sunlight” item and this locks you out of the event.

I think only having a handful of player have access to the storylet was by design. They wanted it to be a brief glimpse of sunlight and then it flickered away. The sort of thing you miss if you blink, which most of us did. They made a brief storylet that some were lucky enough to enjoy, but it wasn’t mandatory, so if you missed it that’s just too bad. It was meant to be missed by most and you’re meant to feel like you missed out on something. If everyone got it, then it wouldn’t be special. It’s so unique that to see it was literally Impossible!
Them’s the breaks in Fallen London. Some people get to see the sun, but you were too busy sleeping so you didn’t. But you do hear rumor that once, back during the Feat of '91, that a friend of your’s saw it, and it was remarkable. Impossible!, really.

FL gave out free stuff so there is no sense in complaining that you weren’t one of the ones to get the free stuff. You didn’t loose anything; they gained something.
It’s the VooDoo Economics of Fallen London. The Bazaar is not a Keynesian.

This. It’s an ice sculpture in the desert. It’s really unusual to do genuinely transient events with Fallen London, which is why I wanted to do it, and why I burned a Friday evening on it.

If you’re grumpy you missed it, there will be other times (this in fact wasn’t quite the first time) and some (not all) similar events will be flagged in advance.

Those of you who have Crustaceans or Lacre: don’t worry, this is not the last time they’ll be useful, or the ‘conclusion’ to that storyline.

I feel like I miss out on something by living on the wrong side of the planet quite often enough, thank you very much.

Oh, so we are wrong for sleeping at night now?

I cannot help but be amused by that statement. You have made my day, sir.

We’re GMT, and I don’t work 9-5 but I can’t give global coverage either. Other events, other times, though.

Ah, good to know that my friend will be able to put her Lacre and Crustacean to use. ^^ I elected not to tell her about this because it’d just upset her, and I had enough of upsetting people today.

I suggest a compromise on future Friday nights, good sir: work from the pub!

A twist in your tale! You are now my best mate, you are, mate!
You have gained 1 x Unsettling Kebab (new total: ??)
You have lost 1 x Memories of the Evening (new total: 0)

While we’re on the subject of transient content, is it still possible to get a Mirrorcatch Box (if it even has a future use), or would searching prove fruitless and we’d be better off just selling our river-in-a-boxes?

I only hope that won’t always happen in the weekend. Weekends are holy and sacred to my people.

You, sir, have just made my day.

Speaking for myself, I don’t mind the transient content, but the lack of announcements and such did give me the worries. I was thinking that one of these days, I’m going to wake up and everyone else will be Rubbery Men. All the shops will be Rubbery; the streets twisted into Rubbery patterns and exuding amber. And they will see me, and they will wave their tentacles mournfully - pityingly - and then they will all parade into the Bazaar and close the door.

Edited to add: I feel I should apologise; Alexis put all that work into creating this event, and I reward it with what turned out to be a genuinely haunting Twlight Zone-esque glimpse into my previously undiagnosed abandonment complex!

Wait, you mean you aren’t a rubbery man? Did you miss the big party where we all had Hesperidian Cider shots and got free personal enchancements?

Perhaps the sun will be back next year? I only got a short three action glimpse all the way at the end, but I, for one, loved it.

Except we did loose something. We lost the ability to experience that content for ourselves, and as far as I’m concerned that’s a far greater loss than any reward that game with those actions.

Transient content like this; actions available for only a couple of hours, is something that I can’t get behind. In my opinion it’s both grossly unfair and hugely disrespectful to the vast majority of the playerbase.

I have to echo Nathan Rider’s thoughts on the matter. This event and the clear indication that things like this will keep happening have soured a game that I used to love.

Saying that no one should get to experience anything special because you missed one of the special things is less than charming.

This wasn’t advertised in advance and then changed at the last minute to exclude people. There was no bait and switch. It was simply an event to do something special for a handful of random players who catch it.

This is like throwing a fit and refusing to shop at your favorite store because they gave a surprise car away to their millionth shopper. It seems rather toadish.

Take heart in knowing that this is a place in which special things happen, and you may soon have a singular experience of your own.

Saying “everyone should get to experience something special” is, quite literally, the antithesis to saying “no one should get to experience anything special”.

Missing an opportunity doesn’t count as losing some-thing-. Everything you had before the Summer Sun Festival, you have now. You might grumble about it - I admit I have - but if I give your neighbour a delicious pastry, you can’t call the police and say I stole a pastry from you.
