So I’ve been playing this game for a few months after picking up Sunless Sea on Steam and loving the world that Failbetter has put together. I’ve advanced enough to become a PoSI and I’m now seeing that FB is working on changes to the early game and how the different stats work in terms of story advancement.
What I’m wondering is: are there any rules regarding users having multiple game accounts? Some of the other browser games I’ve played (Cybernations) have outright banned multi-accounts due to the potential for cheating in a competitive environment, while others (Kingdom of Loathing) take an approach that multis are ok as long as they in no way ever interact.
Are there any specific rules as to how this should work in Fallen London, or am I free to set up a second account once the changes to Watchful, Dangerous, and Shadowy roll out alongside the already-established changes to Persuasive so that I can get a new take on the early game experience?
Nope, almost everyone here has multiple characters.
And due to the fact this game is not about competition, rules on this matter are quite liberal. edited by Andrew Astherson on 9/2/2015
Thanks! I took a look at the TOS again after seeing someone else’s post about a Greasemonkey script, and the only thing I could find re: multiple accounts is that they can’t be used to obtain a competitive edge or harass people. Since I don’t participate in knife-and-candle anyway I’d say I’m good to go on making that new account. Thanks for the reply.
There was a debate a while ago about what might constitute a competitive advantage, mostly in terms of “feeding” your main account with extremely advantageous social actions.
I don’t think we ever got an official word from Failbetter (probably on purpose,) and the community seemed rather divided on if that was permissible or not.
Personally I’d suggest avoiding all interaction with your alts, both for fairness sake, and as a motivation to meet real players to interact with. To my knowledge, no one has ever actually got in trouble for it though.
I couldn’t agree more! For my first few months I had a very hard time meeting people; however, some people appear to have sent me social actions in time, even calling cards. I prefer to conduct all-to-most in-game interactions in character (and in the third person, as though writing a one-off storylet), so I sometimes chug potions rather than go to the trouble of composing a fun note to a friend and waiting for menace reduction or waves.
I’ll just add that if you’ve only recently become a PoSI, then you still have quite a bit of content left to explore. It sounds like you’re holding off for all the trackers to be finished anyway, but I’d suggest waiting to start an alt until you start running out of things to do and things get grindy (it’s what I did, at least).
I made an alt quite soon after starting play with my main because I saw how many paths I couldn’t take because of the choices I had made with Myrto.
Mostly I wanted to see the content with the other ambitions, and I’m so glad I did! My alt, Edith Alpha Doyle, is doing Heart’s Desire, which I’m loving! The writing is so great.
My only interaction between the two of them is occasionally they do the affluent photographer, which is kind of hated by other players, judging by these forums. I just wanted to see that content.

It’s not hated , it’s just that once you’ve done it, you’ve done it. And it keeps giving you the card to do it again.

i would make alts just to explore the 4 different ambitions, but that’s just me. note: that the shadowy/persuasive ambition of “light fingers” will eventually provide you with a way to reset your ambition if you find it boring or roleplaying plot device… so you might want to take that on for your first ambition.
That’s me, too. But I’ve only gotten round to doing one alt thus far. I simply don’t have the time to manage three.
Bear in mind that while the Light Fingers ambition does allow you to change ambitions, there isn’t an option to finish story and go on to complete another ambition.
Multiple attempts to edit to insert the spoiler tag, but I think it doesn’t allow more than one per post? edited by navchaa on 9/8/2015 edited by navchaa on 9/8/2015 edited by navchaa on 9/8/2015
