Seeking Mr Eaten's name

TAKE A TRIP TO A HIDDEN PLACE.

(Do not sell anything before you go)

Another more serious thing: if you’re Heart’s Desire, give/sell to drop below 70 First City Coins, and continually cash out your Masters Connection for more coins (and send those off to friends)

I know I personally was planning on wearing a bunch of ridiculous hats to zero out all of my stats except dangerous before I go. I would then write a story about how I am going north in my mobile fortress of colorful hats. Unwise acts tend to mean more when they are a bit more personal. Selling a cider is an example of something no one would normally do, but can be great fun. Maybe you can even trade it for a goat haha

Im sorry, it’s just really hard to come up with new bad ideas that I haven’t already done for myself haha

No, no, fair enough NiteBrite!

(But I’m not selling the Cider!)

Well, you can raise Potential to 160 (or even 170, I think) with other - more common - items, before you have to use the Trade Secrets.

You could try getting rid of all of your connections by repeatedly switching Closest To. You can gamble away all of your Connected: Masters in the Big Top. You can throw the most extravagant salons or the most, um, entertaining orphanage parties even though you don’t need the attention. You can go on sprees of creativity and use all of your blackmail material and favours in high places to write epic short stories. You can see what happens when you mix Laudanum and Black Wings Absinthe.

I’m also unsure of what I should be doing at this point. I want to send more calling cards out, but that mostly relies on drawing God’s Editors. I’m 18k echoes away from a heptagoat, so I could possibly get one in a few months if I wanted to stick around that long. There are also a few fate stories that I never bothered with — the Gift and the Blemmigan affair being the big ones — but maybe I should just wait and do those on my next character after an indeterminately long break. It’s weird and a little sad to see my character end after so many years, especially when he’s not exactly ending well.

Guy Scrum, I did get some Connections back after tanking them to get St Beau’s, so yeah, I could do that! I don’t want to do menace-area stuff, though, since I need to be in the Fifth City for the Cider party.

I did think about leaving Seeking until after the Ambitions were complete, but the lure of taking Cider NORTH and of starting fresh and seeing all the shiny new stuff (I can’t run two characters at once, I’ve tried) was too much.

I find that I keep accidentally seeking Mr. Eaten’s name. I’ll get a black bordered card, it won’t be clear which option is which, and I take a hit to a stat every time. Harrumph.

How are you accidentally starting Seeking?

The black bordered cards show up if you have Unaccountably Peckish (the higher the quality, more cards can appear). All the cards have options which lower UP, though for cards 3-6 this can hit your stats or give menaces (or both). For the other black cards, there are safe options to lower UP. You can check the wiki.

But even better: if you have access to the first coil of the Labyrinth of Tigers, taking refreshments there lowers two levels of UP. Just do this a few times, get rid of your UP and the cards won’t bother you again. (unless you choose to start Seeking via the Forgotten Quarter option, or by accepting a betrayal request from another Seeker).

I thought all black cards were connected to Seeking. I’m trying to raise my Dangerous to 215, and I’m worried one wrong click will lower it after I get it. :/

The Unaccountably Peckish cards act are linked to Seeking. They act as both an entry way and a method of progression. However, as long as you avoid the Marsh-Mired options you will never get any points of SMEN and never begin the road to destruction. As long as you drop your UP value to 0 (ideally through the methods mentioned above) they UP cards will leave you alone and any you currently have in your hand will disappear.

I’ve a quick question that a cursory search was unable to reveal. I’m at 22 SMEN right now, and that Light a Taper option is looking ever so tempting. I understand I will lose those items eventually, as I will lose all things, but is there an optimum time to do this? Thanks in advance.

Use this spreadsheet to determine whether it’s better to Light a Taper or to sell those things and use them to buy Cryptic Clues for Appaling Secrets: Seeking: Appalling Secrets & Winking Isle - Google Sheets (usually it is better to sell things unless your Watchful is really low)

I’m at 17 SMEN and about to hit 18 which is where stains unlock. I already have Arthur from the old days, but I lost my stains with Flint for a laugh. I’m trying to get to SMEN 21 so I can light three tapers and them go to winking isle, get Beau etc. Does staining ones soul increase SMEN, and if so is it any cheaper than the appalling secrets option at this level?

EDIT: Confirmed it does not. Only candles increase smen, nvm.

But, do you need the stains? Or are they only needed to get the St Arthur Candle?

I believe they are only required for Saint Arthur. I haven’t seen anything else within smen’s main storyline that requires them.

Side note: I was able to complete my 7th rosette, thanks everyone who assisted! Also I’m only two levels of notability away from completing the 11th masters blood. I spent a bit of fate to speed it up because I’m getting really impatient with delays to smen haha.

Stains do not increase Seeking. As far as I can tell, you have to have the stains, scars, and chains to get The first candle and then each candle after that requires you to have the previous candle. So if you already have Arthur’s you could probably skip re-staining yourself. Unless I’ve missed something.

And this is why we love you and wanted you for mayor.

Winking Isle is a slow torture. Wish I had the Fate to speed it through like you do, Nite! Congrats for your rosette!

For anyone who’s already obtained Saint Cerise’s Candle and sacrificed a Classic Short Story, do you know if the action deducts 1 Classic Short Story or does the action take all Classic Short Stories within your inventory?

Something tells me almost no one knows that.
